I get that not everyone plays or cares about standard, but if they are going to reprint such a powerful card, it would have to be in an environment where it would be less relevant. that's the problem with Liliana of the veil though.

Fun fact: everyone was, literally everyone was laughing how can Siege Rhino get inside of a Copter? It was a flavor joke, that both teams (mine, Macedonia and our opponent, Australia) and the coverage team were laughing even after the match :) to bad we didnt make the top 8

My mind was completely blown by that clip; I knew this awesome guy who'd hang out at our apartment was a good magic player but to see David Mines in a video like this has blown me away. Fantastic dude, fantastic player and I wish I spent more time with him back in the day :)

Have you seen the rest of his content? I especially love his videos on Artists but all of them are very high quality.
Funny thing is that I lost interest in competitive magic right at that time, 2014 - 2015. I remember watching Ari Lax win and that meta was boring as hell to me. But I also feel somewhat nostalgic watching this...
@@stalememesygo7520 standard format is always a mixed bag and can be a very different experience from expansion to expansion. I would definitely recommend trying MTG Arena, since it's free and really is better experience than MTGO, before buying anything.

Ok so. This shit right here. These kinds of videos are what I love. I have never played MTG a day in my life. I do play yugioh though. But there's no videos like this for my game. I've been binge-watching you and other MTG videos for like 2 weeks now and I'm about to buy a few pre mades and learn to play. The game seems so fun and a lot slower passed and I love it. Very thankful for you and others for keeping me entertained with your videos.
I wish you good luck on your journey; Magic is truly a beautiful game.
I personally find draft the most fun format as a beginner; it's fun to just jump in and try and build a deck without worrying about how much i feel like investing in singles.

I've noticed an increase in "siege rhino esque " cards being legendary now. I bet if siege rhino was released today it would be legendary . Questing beast seems like the best example. I bet if it wasn't a legend it would see more play
It would be absolutely broken if it wasn't legendary. Not as broken as some cards and combos but on it's own it would be way too strong.

Siege Rhino doesn't have menace
for him to die through combat it would need many times to be blocked with two or more creatures. he doesn't have menace, rather he's the embodiement of menace xD

With the current power level of modern cards, Siege Rhino has been shown to be too weak, and so has been errataed to have Menace and also vigilance to balance its colour pallet -- real actual Wizard card maker person

Given how pushed Siege Rhino is, I don't understand how they didn't make it a 4/4 so as to not lead to those board stalls that were so infamous in Standard. How could they have not seen this coming?
But LSV said that Siege Rhino wasn't a mistake at all so it must be the perfect Magic card as it is.
Also 4 was the magical number for a lot of KOT removal. Being pushed to 5 means it couldn't be removed by Sarkhan's minus, Mardu charm or Stoke the Flames

I remember the developers saying that the Abzan wedge was underperforming compared to the others in their internal testing so they felt it needed a boost. They were genuinely shocked that it ended up being the dominant strategy in Standard.

Right, where as Siege Rhino actively kills you through its drain and gain or through its massive body with trample. I'm a little bias though because I was one of those bastards that loved playing Siege Rhino. As a result of that standard format, Abzan has become my favorite wedge.

I wanna show some arena folk the true power of horned horse. If siege rhino is residing on Ikoria as the head honcho, I’m gonna go fucking ballistic.
5 mana tef was never that bad. He was just a strong control card. His meta was pretty balanced. 3 mana tef truly warps the format around him and is a godawful design.
This takes me back to Khans... My favorite era of Magic. Awesome video!

I remember watching that match between Patrick Chapin and Shahar Shennar live as a 16 year olds. I was in awe. I wanted to be these guys. This match in particular was absolutely mental. I forever love this era of competitive magic.
Khans of Tarkir was my first ever prerelease, and was the first time I started to play Standard over kitchen table Magic. And yet, I never cast a single Rhino. Jeskai for life!

I used to play Force of Will before the expansion Alice Origins dropped. (otherwise known as "Let's make this game as fast as YuGiOh") There has been a lot of design and balance issues in that game, but I'd kill for a full power Sherry or Gill vs what is top tier in the game now. I imagine it is like you guys and Siege Rhino. Broken at the time but still somewhat respectable, vs unfun uninteractive nonsense. I don't play Magic, but hearing what the formats are like, it sounds somewhat similar (though with less power-creep than FoW)

Honestly, Rhino is like in top 3 cards of all time for me. It's mostly for nostalgia reasons, as I started playing in Nyx but didn't play standard until Khans. I fell in love with Rhino and its incredible value, and he will be dearly missed in my eyes.

I would argue thragtusk was much worse in terms of meta defining. Thrugtask literally made Delver decks unplayable.

4:54 You mean this perfect board state? Siege Rhino is one of my favorite cards of all time and Abzan midrange was my favorite deck of all time to pilot. Having to play for the long haul and choose your spots made it excellent, and sideboard composition usually decided the mirrors. All in all fantastic format.
FWIW, I think Magic is in a good place when creatures are the most powerful cards in the format. When Planeswalkers (Oko, Teferi) or Enchantments (Wilderness Reclamation, Fires), or spells (any format with good counterspells and card draw) far outstrip the creatures, the game is less fun as a result.
The whole video was beautiful, as always, but the last section and outro were masterful. Congrats and thank you. You really lift this game and community

Correction: Rhinos are pretty far from being pachyderms. They're actually odd-toed ungulates alongside horses and tapirs.
This card is very important to me. I used to play jeskai low-budget decks when i was a kid, and this bad boy was the one denying me top 4s on game days. But then with frontier gaining some attention i decided to play 5-color BTL, as i had discovered bring to light was one of my favorite card. And - you guessed it - i jammed the whole playset of rhinos in that deck. It was the first the time i had gotten the opportunity to harness its power; and many months after my beloved Khans of tarkir standard had became a thing of the past, i had finally been able to play with my nemesis. It truly felt like i was playing the bad guy. Good memories. (sorry for the bad english)

Seige Rhino was my boy! So many abzan decks and so many Rhinos at my LGS. Khans block was the last standard I played. It was soooo much fun. Glad to see another release from you, Sam. They're brilliant as always and it made me miss playing Standard Magic. Now that's saying something. Cheers :)

34 rhinos is one of THOSE decks. like "ladies looking left", or "ghost riding the whip", or "there's the door". once you learn it, you tell EVERYONE the gospel and the glory.

I'm relatively new to Magic and have only been playing for maybe 9 or 10 months, probably less. Once during a game of Commander a buddy of mine was using his Atraxa, Grand Unifier deck and at one point he plays a Siege Rhino and exclaims "Oh yeah here we go best card in the deck!" and I was so flabbergasted lol. It seemed great but the hype he gave it was so funny. Crazy to hear how it dominated competitive standard for just about its entire playable duration til it rotated out!
I don't know if I'm alone here, but Siege Rhino is probably my favorite card. Mirrors aren't usually a fun match in my experience, but there's something about those early abzhan control mirrors that I just love. I think it's how the battlefield getting gummed up with swarms of creatures, it kinda makes it feel like a real military engagement between armies rather than a duel between planet hopping wizards.

I love these videos where you give the history of old cards. Necropotence was my favorite one so far but Jace the Mind Sculptor and Siege Rhino were cards I was not around to experience the effects they had on the format so really cool to see the history of it. I really like all your videos but I hope you do more of these about the boggymen of various times in Magic.
