Love James Taylor. What a great singer songwriter. His style is more folk rock. I grew up with his music & had some of his records. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide. "You've Got A Friend" was a big hit for him in 1971 & was written by Carole King. Some other hits were "Fire and Rain", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Handy Man", "Sweet Baby James", "Carolina in My Mind", "Shower the People" & "Your Smiling Face". He was married at one time to Carly Simon. They had a few duets together including "Mockingbird" & "Devoted to You".

This song was written by Carole King. She was a song writer in the 60s with her then husband. You have probably have heard many of the songs they wrote together. In 1971 her first album Tapestry was release. This song was on it.
    Song recommendations:
"Fire and Rain" which James Taylor wrote to a reaction of a friend's death.
"I Feel the Earth Move" , "Jazz Man", "You Got a Friend" by Carole King
"That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be", "You're So Vain", "Nobody Does It Better" from Carly Simon, because I grew up with Carly Simon and James Taylor together. I can't think of one without the other.
Mockingbird a duet with Carly & James
There are a lot of duets out there also with Carole King & James Taylor also even "You Got a Friend", where Carole plays the piano and James the guitar live.

Doesn't matter what kind of music you were into, a whole generation of boomers and their parents were humming this tune back on the seventies. It literally became part of the culture. James Taylor is one of the Great American songwriters of his generation, and this is probably his most iconic song - though it is was penned by his friend Carole King... another great singer-songwriter of the era you need to explore. "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor should be next.

You said it well, this 67 year old and her parents and younger brother used to sing it around the table after dinner, in harmony! Not always good harmony, but we loved doing it! My boyfriend was blown away. My best friend since we were 13 years old, would often be there, along with anyone else. Of course there were other songs, but this was our favorite. My friend and I still are there for one another in spirit, and I am grateful.

When he died at 31 I had this song played at his funeral and it really impacted his friends who were there at the service. Several were his pall bearers. We all miss him so much 6 years later. @@wendyryder2708 Peace and blessings to you and your daughters; I have 2 daughters myself and am more conscious than ever of how precious they are and how I don't think I could take losing another child. One of my daughters has autism and at 34 now she functions on a 6 year old level and has deficits physically from a stroke she had at 18, she has a history of seizures, has a genetic defect and type 2 diabetes and 5 years ago had 2 surgeries to remove a large tumor in her right ear canal. She lost most of her hearing after that. She has all these medical conditions and is now having liver trouble, and it fills me with such dread just worrying about losing her to some medical crisis. She depends on me to make all her medical decisions and it is exhausting sometimes. At 34 she still plays with toys and her room is full of stuffed animals and all her toy collections and she is obsessed with all the old Nickelodeon tv shows from the 90s that she loved as a child. And I worry about my youngest daughter even though she's 32 and an engineer with a successful career and busy life hundreds of miles from here in a much bigger city; adult or not, she is my baby girl! It would make my own heart stop I believe if something happened to her. I am the one who found my son in the floor (still warm) and did cpr and called 911 but he was beyond help, and that stays with you as a mother.

I had him on 8-track. That tells you how long I've been listening to him. His songs "Fire and Rain" and "Sweet Baby James" are two of my favorites. I always put Him and Jim Croce in the same category. Fantastic story tellers.......But judging from your video reactions you would probably like "Steamroller Blues" the best. (it is a blues parody written by James Taylor, that appeared on his 1970 album . It was intended to "mock" the inauthentic blues bands of the day. The song later appeared on two of Taylor's compilation albums and has been recorded by a variety of other artists including Elvis Presley. Isaac Hayes even performed the song on an episode of the A-Team. ( ruclips.net/video/yz0H8D4U7U8/видео.html ) .

James on one of his concert DVDs, talks about hearing Carole King do this song for the first time at the Troubadour in LA. Taylor famously had a serious drug problem at the time and he joked that he doesn't remember anything for about a year on either side of hearing the song, but he remembered that. He thanked Carole for the generous act of letting him release the song first and then said, "Of course, at the time, I didn't realize I'd be playing it every night for the rest of my life."

    From Wikipedia:
"You've Got a Friend" was written by Carole King during the January 1971 recording sessions for her own album Tapestry and James Taylor's album Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. King has stated that "the song was as close to pure inspiration as I've ever experienced. The song wrote itself. It was written by something outside myself, through me." According to Taylor, King told him that the song was a response to a line in Taylor's earlier song "Fire and Rain" that "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." King's album was recorded in an overlap with Taylor's, and King, Danny Kortchmar, and Joni Mitchell perform on both. The song is included on both albums; King said in a 1972 interview that she "didn't write it with James or anybody really specifically in mind. But when James heard it he really liked it and wanted to record it".

This is a very nice reaction. My only surprise is that you hadn't heard it before. There are a set of songs every living person should hear growing up and this is one of them.

OMG, Chod . Another great voice from my high school years. I LOVED James Taylor and owned several of his albums, plus his wife Carly's and of course the classic Tapestry by Carol King. Beautiful, touching lyrics and melodies.
James is another of those tragic geniuses who struggled with depression and drug addictions while still blessing us with his output. Thankfully in this case, he overcame his demons and is still with us, making music. Bless your sensitive soul James.....
Would love to hear "Fire and Rain" as others have requested. Also the duet "Mockingbird" with his wire Carly Simon. Thank you.

There is virtually no one who can't feel and react to this song and this voice. I have LOVED James Taylor for 40 years, and I know he still represents something deeply human in all of us. Thanks for doing this video. I like you a lot. Peace.

Carole King wrote this song for him after hearing his song Fire and Rain.… Which is about the loss of his friend, the break up of his band, and his drug problem. Both are excellent songs.

Sweet baby James is also another big song of his- it's really nice. Blossom is another song that I really like even though it's not as well-known. But he has so many good ones - ah, the seventies!

Finally a. reaction to a song written by Carole King, a prolific songwriter. She holds 4 Grammy awards and is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She and James Taylor recorded "Will You Love Me Tomorrow": ruclips.net/video/GLA7sanwnN8/видео.html. He sang back-up and played guitar. Thanks for reacting!

I appreciate your reflections on the lyric. I see it in my son’s generation. No hard and fast friends. He wants them but few people value strong relationships or the work that goes into them.

Such an iconic song by an iconic singer/guitar player, but ironically he destroyed many of his close friendships and relationships with his very rough substance abuse.
