We end today’s show in conversation with New York City Councilmember Yusef Salaam. He was one of five teenagers from Harlem - four Black and one Latino - wrongfully accused and convicted of raping and nearly killing 28-year-old white investment banker Trisha Meili in 1989. Meili had been jogging in Central Park when she was assaulted, and the accused teens became known as the Central Park Five. They faced a barrage of racism from the public and news media during their trial, including from real estate mogul and future U.S. president Donald Trump. All of the boys were convicted and served at least six years, with one, Korey Wise, having been tried as an adult, spending over a decade in prison. All were later exonerated after DNA evidence corroborated a separate man’s confession to the attack. Redubbed the Exonerated Five, four of the five members addressed the Democratic National Convention last week, slamming Trump, who called for their execution and says he still believes the men are guilty, as hateful and dangerous. “The reality was that we were guilty of the color of our skin,” says Salaam, who successfully ran for city council last year.

Yusef is a perfect example of what’s possible for many of us when we can heal and grow from our traumatic experiences. We are not all the same nor should we be expected to be. He had the capacity and will and is using it to help better the experience of others as well as himself and family.

Strong how? There were seven victims total at Central Park that night. Only was was raped. They beat and robbed others. There was a group of 30 to 40 of them. Their not some innocent victims. And then, somehow we-know-who, was allowed to take out ads in the papers, calling for their unaliving without a fair trial. Thank goodness our laws protected them, and they did have a fair trial with DNA evidence, and they are here with us today. I will never forget this story. I was in the 10th grade when I saw the story on the National news. I disliked Trump from that moment on and followed their story until exonerated.
Not since I was a teenager have I forgotten the full page ads that Trump took out calling for them to be executed. The story felt wrong to me. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if that had actually happened? Would anyone have even thought to further pursue the case to determine the truth?
Right. Now look at what 'top cop' has done and realise that both parties are equally corrupt. Stop falling for the false two-party duopoly. Neither side will ever put the best interests of the people above the best interests of their donors.

When that happened, one of the boys dad bought him down to the police station and he confessed, the others confessed, it was a big thing that happened then, trump put the ad out, they did about 8 years a piece they got exonerated, and I don't see any ridicule on the Democratic judge, prosecutor that actually put them in prison. But, before dubbing these men "heroes" please remember that at least some of them did physically assault several unidentified individuals and threw rocks at passing cars. I saw a documentary on these gentleman and it absolutely blew my mind and broke my heart. It was so well made.
As of August 25, 2024, 27 states and American Samoa still have the death penalty as a legal penalty at the federal level. However, 20 of those states only have the authority to sentence people to death, while the other seven, along with the federal government and military, have moratoriums in place.
The states that still have the death penalty include:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, and Kentucky.

The death penalty has never been a deterrent in any country. Humans don't think that far ahead when they're committing a crime. The only time it ever worked was in Transylvania, when Vlad Tepes-- Vlad the Impaler-- instituted an automatic death penalty for any and all infractions, including wearing the wrong type of shoes.

No she just refused to release evidence proving that a man on death row was innocent, locked up parents because their kids skipped school and refused court orders to let prisoners out of jail when their sentence where fully served because she claimed she needed the slave labour!
They were deprived of their youth life and of their families.
No money is enough to pay for what the "justice" system did to them.
I'm very glad that they were exonerated.
