- Hey Y'all! In this weeks video I make the heart of my workshop, the workbench. Because of the limited space I devised a way to have a large work surface while also having a bunch of bench-top tools easily accessible. I hope you like the video, and if you do consider subscribing because I have plans to make a lot of awesome things in this shop now that the bench is complete.

Bro you killed this design, this was a great solution to needing to park your work van inside but still have a ton of functionality, good stuff man!
If no one has mentioned it before, Undo the screw in the end of the tool boards and fill the holes with superglue or nail varnish and then put the screws back in. The Glue/nail varnish hardens the wood around the screws making for a stronger fixing.
thanks for the tip!
That is flippin' brilliant! Kudos to you!
I was searching for examples of using 270-degree hinges (for a Murphy bed enclosure) and found this wonderful garage workbench/workshop project. Of course, the only bench tool I presently have to hang this way is a miter box, but it's a start! I also like the materials used, the simple construction and the vice mounts. I really need a pair of vices!
My first modification will be to add a cleanup sink that will normally be covered by a benchtop panel. Second will be basic piping for a vacuum system, as my shopvac will be stored under the bench when not in use elsewhere.
Thanks for the example and especially the inspiration!
First time seeing the 5 knuckle hinge in action. Learned something!
I got mine on amazon if you need some!
The term "5-knuckle hinge" simply refers to the fact that the hinge pin goes through 5 segments, 3 on one leaf and 2 on the other (as opposed to cheaper 3-knuckle variety). The ones you used are better defined as 270 degree opening hinges. However, I have to admit that if you search Amazon for 5-knuckle hinge, the correct ones pop up on top.
Hey this looks really cool. As tools such as these can have a large power draw, I'd avoid using that white power "splitter" and instead find a proper power strip that is rated for what you're using it for.
These power splitters don't usually have fuses, so if a tool or two are pulling more power than the cord is rated for, the cord can melt and cause a fire. It's also usually a good idea to avoid fuse-less extension cords as well.
With a fused extension cord and/or a properly rated power strip, the fuse will blow and cut off power to the tools before the cord can melt.
I picked up a couple heavy duty appliance extension cords and swapped them out already. The white one was just the only one I had at the time
@@SomeSkillStudio awesome! Safety first!
Ingenious! Love it!!
That is great! I am very new to wood working. What a great video to inspire people like me.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Now that's next level thinking out of the box!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👋
Thank you!
Very awesome concept and video! Great job! I will be doing something like this for sure in the coming months. I was always thinking of having a storage shelf and having every tool mounted on the same “jig” and then being able to bring out whatever tool I needed to go into my “jig” on my workbench. I like this better because it’s all ready to go so easily.
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful. Enjoy building yours!
Great setup, I decided to build a workbench that housed a table saw, and I really wanted vacuum so I did not mount to a wall and put it on wheels. Yours gave me some good ideas.
I love this concept so much. I’m soon going to have a 10x12 space to set up my own workshop, and this has given me some great ideas about how to best maximize the space and flow while having room to still move about. Thank you! 🙏
Thanks for watching!
Looks great! Ty!
Love this, we have a small garage too so this will be perfect to help maximize our space. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Looks like it worked out great!
That’s awesome!
You make great videos, explain your process clearly. I also like easy music/volume in the background. I was worried about the screws coming out of the edge too, but you said not issues. Good news. I wish I saw this video yesterday. I built frame for French cleats on back wall of work bench. I have rough rock walls so it took up a lot of workbench space. I could take it down and move to another wall.
Thank you for watching and good luck on your french cleat wall!
Awesome job!
well done !
GOALS 😍
Thank you!
Really impressive! Thanks for sharing your very interesting video!
Thanks for watching!
What are you doing for dust collection? Yes this build opens options ❤
I'm glad you made this video! I have more than a few of these hinges and I was about to throw them away.
Glad I could help!
I Love it. Going to build one soon in my she shed...
Have FUN!
This is just outstanding. Superb use of space and making it easy access. If you keep having to dig out your tools you end up not using them. Making the flip tables makes it a sintch.
Just a heads up. That's not plywood. That's melamine coated chipboard. Plywood is way stronger and water won't destroy it as fast as chipboard. Its great for your purposes though. Great job.
thanks
Awesome work!
Thank you!
Everything about this workshop and build is extremely cool. I am so impressed. Taking a bit of inspiration here. Sub!
Very cool, nice work!
Thanks!
Fantastic idea! Saw your post on Reddit. Love it!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Badass!
Fantastic idea. I'd love to do the same but my current workbench design would need to be replaced (along with the MFT homes, T-Tracks etc...) to allow me to move items around to fit. For now I may try & do this for the belt/disc sander which I use most days but takes up a lot of space.
Thank you! I'm glad you like it!
Very nice. I have a mobile workbench in my garage and am going to use your idea to mount all my tools. Thanks
Have fun!
Great design and nice video of the assembly process. How is it holding up? Looks like its been 2 years since you made it. Watching the video, I have concerns about the durability of the melamine, specifically where the hinges are screwed in and where the tools are mounted with screws instead of nuts, bolts and washers that go all the way through. The hinges and screws bear a lot of weight and I'd worry about the screws loosening up or stripping through the wood over time due to the weight of the tools/equipment pulling against them and the melamine absorbing moisture. The garage doesn't appear to be climate controlled so the melamine could absorb moisture over time and warp.
What an awesome idea, I will definitely build this flip top bench. So much better than single flip top carts.
Thanks
Enjoyed the video my guy, you killed it!!
Thanks!
Dude!! That work bench is so sick!! Great video man! Super stoked to see that French cleat wall, it looks awesome too! (I’m the guy who sold you the drill press btw)
Drill press stand video coming soon!
I think it looks fantastic too!!
Good job
Awesome! PVILLE STAND UP!!!!
Thanks!
I am super impressed with this! I Obviously there are some sacrafices made in the flush surfaces because of the flip top and hinges, but what you gain is impressive and outweighs that in a small shop. I think I would have just wrapped the cords and plugged the tools in on a power strip on the wall to keep the cord out of the way where I might hook something on it. I first found you on the super fast FB reel of this, but I hated that It was too fast for me to see what the tools were. I have not worked with the melamine. I wonder how to limit the tear out...
I really like this setup. I’m in the process of purchasing my first home and think I’ll build something similar in my garage. Great video!
Thank you! Good luck house hunting!
Merry Christmas in your new home!
I would be a bit concerned that those screws holding the hinges will eventually tear out of the particle boatf due to the forces of weight and vibration. Pretty cool design though for your limited space.
some of them have been there for 6 months with no issues, each hinge holds 9 screws. if i have any issues in the future then I will fix it. Thanks for watching.
How have they been holding up now that it has been a year? Would you still do it the same way? Thanks for video. Think it’s a great idea!
You should ask the dude, not me...@@seanpeine9258
This is a beautiful brilliant idea for a garage!
Great work. Thanks for the video. Question: how well have the hinges screwed into the melamine held up after a year. Subscribed!
That is a well-thought-out solution to working in a small space. I must say though, I could not use a scroll saw mounted sideways like that; I need to be facing the blade teeth in order to accurately follow a line. If I mounted mine like yours, I would have to find a way to pivot the saw once it was up on the bench top.
thanks, and the scroll saw teeth are facing the front of the bench.
Thank you
Dig your shop Nice build
Nice work bruv!
Thanks!
I’m indifferent about the bench and flip-tops but the back wall looks awesome!
I dig the flip up thing! My wife showed me the reel on the Facebook. Very cool. I’ll check those hinges out.
Thanks!
(Oh oh...... Ben, you need to cut into the floor or knock something glass off of a shelf. You keep up with this quality work and she may have you busy all through Spring. You are going to miss all the flea markets, auctions, golf tournaments, and car shows otherwise).
Brilliant young man, shame the drill stand didn't fit , keep posting , From Garry in the UK
Thanks! I made a stand for it here if you want to check it out ruclips.net/video/kjKbGwPH2E8/видео.html
Thanks for the great idea.
Excelente vídeo, excelente projeto, parabéns. ..podes dizer o nome desta dobradiça?
I like the concept here. I am laying out 12 foot by 8 foot shed with French cleats and a small section for pegboard for hand-tools. I guess I would like to see you using your miter saw for a long piece( do you have supports to hold the piece up?).
I'm still working on a design for the miter saw supports, but right now I made one that clamps into the woodworking vice and to the end of the bench.
👌
This is awesome! Moving to a new house soon and trying to plan out a better setup than my current clusterf...
Did you have to use 1/2"screws to mount your tools to the panels? Does it seem like that's enough to hold the heavier ones?
yes I just used screws to hold them, most of the tools have 4 mounting points to hold them
¿como se llaman esas bisagras?, ¿están en amazon?
Very nice design, two quibbles, I don't like the angle of you scroll saw, or the sander, not sure how could saw sideways, and on the sander, I use the belt much more then the disc on my sander. I would also add a moveable rest that is the same height as the miter saw.for cutting longer boards on the miter saw, Then if you had a 3 ft board, you move the guide in position to hold the end up, and if you had an 8ft board, you move it along the bench to hold up the end of the 8ft board.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Nice work and great idea. I was wondering, since using it, are there things that you have learned and you would do differently (for instance, these tool I use together, and now they are placed too close to each other)?
nothing so far that I would do differently, but there are several upgrades i want to make. I need to find a way to control the dust better(im thinking of a hood i can set up behind the tools), and i need to add some handles behind some of the tools to make them easier to lift. I also wish the jointer was lower to the ground, but theres not much I can do about that with this set up and I don't really have room to set it up anywhere else in my shop.
@@SomeSkillStudio I have a shop vac that runs through a cheap cyclone on a DIY dust bucket. The tube reaches to a French cleat 'shelf' which has a row of hoses attached to tools. I just move the main hose to the slot for the tool I need. The tools power strip plugs into the shop vac front socket, which has a setting that automatically starts the vac when a tool is in use. The hoses are all just old hoover tubes I scavenged from the tip of online for free. Works really well for dust management.
With the flip top you wouldn't be able to have each tool permanently attached to the 'shelf' but with a long enough hose (or a couple joined together) you could move it to each one as you flip them up. Hoods tend to get in the way & would kind of negate the advantages of the ingenious flip system.
For the long hose, you could use something like a Dyson concertina hose, which should strech the length of the bench, if the vac was located centrally, and retracts back into a tidy length.
I found the belt sander & mitre saw create the most dust. Upgraded the mitre saw dust collection by making a larger 'skirt' around the existing dust collection inlet, using offcuts of roofing rubber sheet. Not 100% effective but around an 80% improvement.
Working all this stuff out is part of the fun of having a workshop :) A big thumbs up for this video.
Are those Casey Neistat style boxes above the bench? I’m doing that too but with ammo style utility boxes. I subbed for more😊
Does anyone know if there are hinges like this that can be used on a 1.5" thick tabletop rather than 3/4"? I've looked but I can't find any.
amzn.to/3Ovwqz7 I think these will work
Do you have solutions/plans for when a project needs more flexibility than the ‘permanent’ set up? For example, if your piece is longer than the distance from the bandsaw blade to the wall?
I would just use hand tools like a circular saw.
Do you feel the hinges and lift system is strong enough to have a table top planer, like the Dewalt?
i'm not sure, my heaviest tool on this bench is around 50 lbs and a planer is around 100. if i were to do it i would use solid wood and probably find a way to help me lift it
U are amazing have to subscribe you channel 🎉
Table is on wow level....but saw dust will be nightmare for tools on wall😔❤️
Naw, I have a leaf blower
I love your work space! This is so well designed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and steps on the video.
I don’t how well this would work in action, but another possibility to mitigate sawdust on hanging tools *might* be to attach an old broom handle or two to a sheet (or two, for length) of plastic, and attach the plastic to the wall above the tools. Keep it rolled up on top, out of the way, like an RV awning, until time to use the power tools, then unroll it so that it covers the tool wall. You’d still be blowing off the same sawdust, but lessening the amount in and among the hand tools.
How much of an overhang did you have for the bench top
2 inches
What did you end up doing for the bandsaw and drill press?
You inspired me to redo my garage with a similar idea and I want to get those two Ryobi tools also…with that in mind I’d love to hear your opinion on the Ryobi bandsaw and drill press too!
I haven't done anything with them yet, but I'm planning on making a stand for them soon. When i do i'll make a video about it and upload it here. Thanks for watching!
From my experience, don't buy Ryobi tools. Unless the quality has significantly changed in the last 3 years, they are not things you should trust. I had a drill catch fire, and other Ryobi tools died very quickly
@@nedben1602 I've bought all of mine in the last two years and i've had zero issues
Awesome idea! Curious to see how long those hinges hold on though. Not sure about the choice of melamine/particle board to secure tools that weight that much.
They've been holding up for 8+ months so far
Way off topic but you look like pro wrestler Adam Cole.
The Scroll Saw is sideways. Are you planning to use it like that?
Yes, I can use it that way
Music quite loud, difficult to hear you talk. Thank you.
Noted
fagvisio
awful and unnecessary soundtrack behind your commentary - great idea though
