- We wanted to bring you guys along with us as we prepare for BC Bike Race, a 7 day cross country mtb stage race. In the first part of this series, we talk about how we've been working over the past six months to improve our endurance and we share some practical tips for training MTB endurance (which is a good idea even if you aren't planning to race XC for seven days! Haha 😉)

Um, could you guys just come and be my personal chefs? Every time you guys make food it looks delicious!
We are not currently for hire as chefs but will keep you updated if things change 😂
I appreciate this video more than those extreme trail riding vids that most people won’t do. I’m just trying to be a better rider with more stamina and higher cadence. This is real mountain biking to me.
Very practical and easy to understand advice. Many thanks Syd and Macky!
This was awesome! A lot of mountain bikers don’t show the fitness part of the sport which is so important at high level. Keep doing more of it!
Totally just noticed the TV logo. Remember back when we got that in our area..83 or 82, such great memories! Train on and giver in the name of sanity! 👍🍻
Thanks for the emphasis on recovery! That angle is SO under-represented but incredibly important for "fast-losers" like myself. I think it applies to anyone busy.
man, those sandwiches looked KILLER! awesome channel! great advice and fun content! :3
Really appreciate your videos. I found your channel last night and I've been binge watching your videos because I'm stuck home sick instead of being out riding. Thanks for letting me enjoy your rides!
Love these informative videos, I don’t race but am always looking to get better on the bike!
Rewind... broken SS chain sea otter 2018 pre-event.. fellow nomads thanks for the assist. And nice work on sea otter 2019 great effort/result. Really good advice here, hope the channel keeps paying dividends and have a blast at BC Bike Race. MTB gold 👊🏼
BC Bike Race is a tough one. But, you guys are preparing really well. I bet you are going crush it!
This was really well done. Love this channel.
Great video! Racing or not it's important to follow a plan like this for self improvement!
So cool you sharing your process in depth to give others a great idea of what to expect
I will be participating in my first XC Race at Challenger MTB in Camden Community College in NJ. Cat 3 (8 mi) in the 50+ age group, on June 23. I’m 62. Trying to train by riding a technical trail system for 8 miles without stopping. So far, so good. Thanks for the inspiration.
Woohoo, good luck! And, most importantly, have fun!
I don't race and I just bought my first MTB this week and only rode it twice so far and this was still helpful.
heart rate is the rev counter, the powermeter is the dyno (car analogy)
I also have a hardtail. The BEST upgrade I made was the PNW Coast Dropper. Why? It is the only dropper post with 40mm of air suspension which is perfect for a hardtail. This dropper has saved my lower back. Check it out you won't regret it.
LOVE the scratch labs stuff!
I’m training for a xc race then a enduro race right after that so this is very helpful overall
Great stuff Syd& Macky enjoyed that Video 😉🏴👍
Thank you for sharing and take the time to make all these informative and very fun videos! Loved the xc stage race videos, was the first time I watch and found you guys.
Really looking forward to this series!
Well done!
Great information, thank you for sharing! Keep it up!
very enlightening! Thanks!
This was awesome!! Lots of info
Really interesting guys. Thanks
Climb, climb, climb.....you’ll see what I mean when you get there. I’m sure you’ll be fine. :)
thanks for sharing!
Love it!
I'm prepping to start racing also. I know all about the recovery realm though..haha
Thanks
One thing that helped my endurance was doing Shaun T insanity work outs, now that it summer I still try and get at least one insanity work out in a week with my gym time and biking
Skratch Labs drink mixs are tasty not too sweet but still has a nice taste to it. Cant wait for this paycheck so I can buy and try a few others of what they offer
Fascinada
Peanut butter, avocado and roast beef?! Wow! 😋
good info thanks for that
Cross train! VeloSpike. Roller skiing. Gonna help you.
My dream of becoming the world's greatest endurance athlete is crushed. For a 3 hour ride I need to pack a foot long sub, 6 water bottles, a quart of milk, and snacks.
😂😂😂
Helpful video for sure.
I always want to ask road bikers why wear the aero Lycra jersey/shorts silliness for training? Wouldn’t a little extra drag/weight make you stronger and you wouldn’t have to look like you’re pretending to be in the Tour De France? I get it when fractions of second count, but for training or even XC, I just don’t see it.
The extra drag of a baggy kit isn't going to provide any significant training benefit, so I think people should just wear whatever they find more comfortable. For me, I would much rather be in spandex -- it's much cooler on hot days (you don't need multiple layers and you don't have to wear a pack because you actually have pockets), less chafing from baggies riding up in weird places, and again, the pockets haha. But I am a big proponent of people just wearing whatever they want as long as they are getting out there!
Did my first xc race this past Saturday and tries to have a gel an hour in.......nearly suffocated myself. Much easier to eat on transfers in enduro races
Yes indeed! A good thing to practice!
That sandwich looked so so good
Btw great video ....great advice
Traditionally, mountain bikers start pounding beers after a big ride. I've heard it can be very beneficial up to a point. Then eat, of course.
Syd I really liked your bike shorts in this video! What kind are they?
They are the pearlizumi womens pro bib shorts! 😊
Are there any tricks Macky uses to add extra effort when riding with Syd for training? Or will you only ride together on endurance training? Great video!
We fill his pockets with sand and then he rides with the back brake half pulled 😉😉 nah JK JK we do intervals and high intensity at our own pace, so it's not a big deal to ride together for some endurance rides. If our coach feels like Macky needs a higher intensity endurance ride, he'll tell us to ride solo. We've also been doing some local xc races which really force us each to push hard for an extended period of time! (The other thing that we failed to mention in this video is that we are racing BCBR as a coed duo so Macky probably needs less solo endurance miles in this scenario than if he were training to to race solo in the elite men's category)
Sour patch watermelons are the best for me give a Hydrating taste once you’re chewing 😆😂
@11:45 I'm literally just back from a 20 kms run and i want that sandwich RIGHT NOW
Full Lycra on a MTB? 👍
Are you guys planning on riding BC on the Hardtails? Don't you think a FS bike would be much more enjoyable for BC? I hear its mostly XCish , but plenty of gnar....Just curious. My wife and I are planning on doing BC in 2020.
We'll be riding the Portals (130mm fs) for BC! But we've been doing a few local xc races on the hardtails recently so we've been putting some time in on then
@@sydandmacky Ah cool !! 130/130 for me as well onmy new Trek Fuel 29er...really can do almost anything on the bike. I got 2nd at Coldwater Enduro in my category.
Good info guys! Can u share the location of the ride; looks like somewhere in AZ
I rewinded: Moab
Yup it's the slickrock trail in Moab 😊
You should make the title more general like "what it takes to race cross-country mountain bike". But sick video tho👍
But Slickrock is not like road riding at all. It's short, punchy climbs that require a lot of ATP and anaerobic effort..
Burning those FTP testers 😂😂😂
Gotta troll them occasionally 😁
@@sydandmacky I appreciate
So... How does this work if you don't have a coach🤔😅
What are some good recovery drinks to purchase???
We use Skratch recovery and love it: bit.ly/2RmbI9l
Do you have a specific mileage on a 2hr longrides? Lets say 60km?
Nope, we do all our rides based on time, not distance because that depends so much on the terrain, bike you're riding, etc.
Ok odd question I know.. but what kind of suites you guys wearing? What kind of material is that?
It's spandex! Pretty standard xc or road kit 😊
What ?!? Ok I feel stupid
Haha no need to! Spandex is rather out of fashion in MTB at the moment 😂
One thing no one seems to talk about are the saddle sores..!
Ooo good point... Maybe we will touch on it in a future video, but the number one thing is to not wear a chamois twice EVER. And beyond that if you are still having issues, look into saddle position or try a different saddle
@@sydandmacky Awesome, thanks for considering! To your point, it's a lot about training on the rig you're going to ride, and with that you will discover what is the limiting factor, Sometimes the sore bum can totally ruin a ride. :P
620 when u can ride up hill one hand and talk without breathing hard 😍
Endurance rides burn lean muscle mass, anything over an hr I bring a protein drink too...
Strange looking tortillas you were eating at the end there.
I KNOW WEIRD RIGHT. It's like a flat burrito. I hear they are calling it a sandwich?
5:35 nice view.
What would you say your chances of winning the BC bike race are?
We are racing as a coed duo and I think we have a decent chance of doing well, but we don't know who our competition is so it's impossible to make a guess!
nice n white teeth, for playing in dirt everyday.
How is ur skin so white
