The current military has numerous beneficial programs. If you’re active duty you get tuition assistance, and if you leave active duty you get one of the gi bill programs. Another huge point is to pick your job/mos after researching it. It could earn you a secret or top secret clearance, or your job training could be approved for college credit. Even with my infantry time, they basically throw gen ed credits at you for leadership etc. Not an inherently bad deal, if you do it right. But if your goal is for after the army, and you can manage things on your own without it, it’d be faster to go straight to school. I agree, non-military misunderstand the differences in rights, liberties, and privileges in the military.

As a Vet currently enrolled…this is just my opinion so don’t get hurt. If you’re going to join the Military to pay for your STEM, I repeat (STEM) degree, do not do it. If you go to school to learn something that can help you get a ticket for a Job it’s worth it. Don’t sell your body, state of mind, and or more importantly TIME for nothing. I wasted four years for nothing because I could have had my degree by now and just pay off my debts. People can say, “ Oh what if it builds the discipline you need to succeed in college” to that I say you are wrong. Many vets will tell you the military doesn’t change you, it only amplifies the person you are. Additionally, BENEFITS ARE NOT GUARANTEED. The only one that is, the GI Bill, has stipulations but hey to each their own. If you really want to join and be Captain America, join the ROTC program and undersell what your piece of paper is worth.
thanks for sharing your perspective as a vet-it’s an eye-opener for anyone considering that route. understanding the trade-offs and knowing your goals before committing is crucial, and your advice about ROTC is a solid option for those set on joining. “The Author” Jonathan David P.S. @@authorjondthank you and unless you are homeless it’s the I to logical choice. You get better treatment and much better pay as an Officer. Furthermore, if you want to make a career out of that then you are golden because your retirement is based of your base pay which as an officer is marginally bigger than an enlisted person.
As another vet currently enrolled, I give you a different opinion. The only stipulations with the GI bill are you need an honorable discharge and you have to be in some kind of program, as opposed to just taking random classes without a plan. Tuition and fees are covered 100% if you’re at a public school and up to a cap at private, and it’s not just that those costs are covered but vets are also *paid* to go to those classes in the form of a reasonable cost of living stipend *in addition* to the aforementioned tuition and fees based on zip code of the school and full or part-time status. If you’re fresh out of high school and know exactly what you want to do in college and life AND you can get lots of other financial aid then sure, just go to college. If any of those aren’t true, a single term in the military is one of the best options to consider, and there are far more tangible benefits to reap than just the GI bill
@@mariocardenas239 that was 3 conditions. 1. Honorable discharge: if you can’t get this you shouldn’t be in college anyways. 2. Public vs private school: it’s a non-issue since it really doesn’t matter where you get your degree (as long as it’s accredited) and most vets going private will still get everything covered through Yellow Ribbon or another financial aid program Also the Rogers scholarship extends the GI bill benefits another year if they’re studying any STEM degree
