      Yeah, in the cities/suburbs we were all mixed together and didn't care about that. Rural areas .... we're still seeing the effects of isolated populations and the attitudes towards "outsiders", whether it's based on race or religion or just "thinking different ". All you have to do is look at a voting map and you will see a different color surrounding every city than the rural areas surrounding them. And it's not because rural aid is being provided by the people they are voting for.

    • @quor2243

      Yes, the negative narratives that media keeps alive is part of the problem, but I think many Americans still look to the past for something to identify with. Even if they don't know if it's a part of their actual history they will still latch onto it, and even if they do accurately trace their history does that have anything to do with now...
      We are suppose to learn from the past, not live it and repeat it.

    Completely different background, but I agree with you on the idea of not getting mad or triggered by certain things that may apply to you. Because of a particular medical condition, I found myself amongst a tight-knit group of others with the same condition. Though they offered support, tips, and understanding, they also taught me to be angered by certain words or lack of accommodations that could cast me as “less than”. These things never bothered me before, but suddenly they did. I ended up leaving that group and had to consciously (over time) retrain myself to not be bothered by these things. My strength is in my ability to adapt and survive in this world - I don’t need to demand that my world adapt for me to survive.

      Definitely fiction, we should focus on modern injustices, but it embodies a greater truth, when I watched it in elementary In history class I was shook, I had no idea. Now kid's have access to the internet, black history month etc. I guess it was just easier not to expose children to the atrocities slavery entailed, war was similar we were taught it happened the dates and places, but never heard an actual account of it. Acknowledging it happened glossing over the details...since slavery happened here the details were glossed over even more. As hard as it was to watch roots enlightened me, and LeVar Burton played a great role, but yes fiction with many historical inaccuracies.

    Never felt guilty about the topic of slavery and bigotry. When I was a teen, I watched the movie Roots, and had no guilt or remorse. Why is that? I never participated in, nor did my ancestors participate in, slavery... at least as far as I know. Even if they did, it wouldn't cause me to have guilt over it. I understand that slavery happened, and that it is an evil that should not be perpetrated upon anyone. Again, I have never enslaved anyone nor participated in that practice in any way, nor have I discriminated against someone simply because they had a different skin tone than my own, so why should I feel any sort of guilt because of the color of my skin? Do black people feel guilt about their ancestors, or people of the same skin color as themselves, enslaving and selling them to others? No? Then let it go! The world will heal if we, as a people of all colors, allow it to.

    Not all black people in America come from slaves... Some come from slave owners too, or migrated to America from other countries after slavery. 🤷 people seriously need to do some soul searching and dig into their family tree. I'm white, but about 30% Scottish (some forced from Scotland into servitude in America) and also have Romani heritage (who were subject to the Holocaust). I've not found a single person in my family tree who owned slaves, so no white guilt here. I don't owe anyone anything... And nobody owes me anything either.
    We're all dealt a hand in life and it's up to each of us to make the best out of life for our own children living the best country in the world. We have all the tools, some just need to learn how to use what opportunities they have available.

I often am lumped in with "white" people even though I'm of French Canadian ancestry, my ancestors never had slaves, and many of my ancestors were forcibly removed by the British from their homeland in the St. John Valley and forced to live in Louisiana - where, by the way, they integrated with the black population. It aired on CBS in the 1990's and had some very well known actors that starred in the series, like Haley Berry (As Queen), Jasmine St Claire, Martin Sheen, the list goes on. Then they will hate on white kids who dont have a racist bone in their body, as if they were the slave owners. Yes, it is absolutely important to know your history, but it is also important to keep it in perspective. Racism will never go away as long as there are people keeping it alive, and that goes for victims as well as victimizers.

    It's kinda fascinating to compare the difference between how black people in US think about slavery several hundred years ago and how that pertains to currently alive white people, and the jewish people and how they think about current day Germans, even though the holocause was way more recent. I think one of these groups have a more healthy long term way of thinking about it, but that's just me.

    in Roxbury,Mass with a black family. The Grandmother Claudia was a former slave and whenever I complained about how bad
    my day was she would sit me on the porch and educate me about what a really bad day was. Shucking peas and green beans

      history that we just don't think about or even acknowledge sadly.

    The thing that people need to remember as well is that half the white people fought a war and died to end slavery in this country.

    • @TehZombish
      @TehZombish Месяц назад +1

      True, but let's not also forget that the people pressed in to fight on both sides were barely above slaves themselves. None of the rich fought in either side... they pressed the lower classes to fight for them. Most of the men that fought in the south were basically given a choice of fight or die. So, yeah. I get what you're saying, but let's keep it 100. And, on top of that... the Civil War was more than just the ending of slavery. it was glommed on politically by the North to push an agenda. Northerners also had slaves, and when they heard of the conditions the southern slaves, and slaves in general were having to go through... they worked to abolish slavery. The war kicked off because they Southern states already felt they weren't being represented equally, and now their main form of labor was being taken from them... so yeah, they went to war. Please don't over simplify the worst war on American soil. Almost a million Americans died on both sides, and most of them really had no idea what they were fighting for.

    As a white girl whose American ancestors all lived in the North and even intermarried with Native Americans, I was raised believing we were always on the right side. So "Roots" didn't get me in a guilty way. I was like, "These are the people we fought against and won. Yay!". Then I found out 1000 ways Ohioans also mistreated non-whites. So there are levels even there. You can have one forebear who was a stop on the Underground Railroad, another who married into a Native American tribe and genuinely believed he was helping by "Americanizing" them, and another who employed black people at lower wages just because he could. And because white unions wouldn't let them in. Categorization of people is hard, and if we all just worked to help *everyone* around us, life would be better for us all.
