I enjoyed this video mainly because I have stocked my pantries with all of these products and more. I home can and dehydrate food. While I'm not interested in a freeze dryer, I would love an electric pressure canner. It would free me to make larger meals and can the leftovers. When the outside temp drops, I want to fill my empty jars with water and water bath can them. A quart jar takes the same space in my pantry as a water filled one. I have 18 gallon jugs of water frozen in my big freezer. I try to keep the freezer full to both cut the electricity usage (a full freezer uses less energy) and keep my freezer cold during long power outages. My power was out for 7 days a few years ago. I didn't open it until the power was back on and all of my food was still frozen. One trick is to put a coin inside a frozen jug. It will sit on top of the ice and sink if that ice defrosts. While I can most of my meat, I can't process meat ribs or hams. I like to have one roast handy, but cube and can any roasts I find on sale. I also can hamburger meat, but I grind my own. The last bought hamburger meat I canned looked and smelled like potted meat. The store had added a junk filler to their meat! If I had not canned it, I would have wondered why what I cooked tasted yucky. I'm feeding those jars to my dogs and cats. Pasta. I make my own. I have a little in the freezer, but usually make it as needed. I have flour, sugar and cornmeal in gallon bags in the freezer. The bags prevent moisture from ruining the food.

Fats are Very important to have daily in your diet. Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Ghee, Butter, Sesame Oil, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil. Powdered and Canned Butter. Don't forget powdered Eggs and Powdered Milk. I didn't mention Canola or Vegetable Oils because they aren't healthy to eat all the time but some recipes or frying call for them. Cornmeal and Pop Corn and Flour and or wheat berries but you would need an electric mill or manual mill. Dont forget Coffee. Tea. Sugar, Chocolates of all types. Jams or preserves to go with your peanut butter or toast. If you make bread from scratch add bread yeast. Add can Chicken. Turkey beef and pork. Dont forget condiments like mayonnaise mustard ketchup bbq sauce soy sauce teriyaki sauce worstishire or steak sauce. Dry spices for soups tacos chili Chinese Thai food, Indian food, German food like stroganoff powder mix goulash powder. Bouillon cubes or paste to flavor soups in vegetable. Chicken and beef. Nuts are good sources of Proteins like pecans. Cashews walnuts almonds pistachios pumpkin seeds. Sunflower seeds and dry raisins an cranberries. 100 % percent Juices are good to stock up on Apple. Orange. Grape. Pineapple. You don't want the cheap ones that are mostly sugar with only 10% juice thats a waste of money. Lemon juice to flavor water. Teas or food. Apple cider vinegar is good to have. Pickles. Relish Jalapenos and can diced hot peppers 🌶 good for lots of recipes. For those of us that are old school box foods like hamburger helper. Box puddings. Brownie cake and cookie mix. Alfredo sauce and spaghetti sauce. Last but not least Maple syrup molasses. Honey, sugar. Stevia or other type sweetners. You can buy powdered peanut butter also as a backup. The best salts give you mineral your body needs like Redman salt. Sea salt. Pink Himalayan salt. That other salt in the blue container has all the mineral removed and your left with only sodium...not good for your body or health.

Make sure to talk to the apartment management to find out how much weight your balcony can hold and plant accordingly. You will be surprised how much you can grow in a small area. One cost-effective way to ensure a clean water supply is to invest in a water filter. There are many affordable options available that can purify tap water or even water from natural sources, making it safe to drink.
Additionally, consider collecting rainwater. It's free, and you can set up a simple rain barrel system. Just make sure it's legal and safe in your area.

I have taken every opportunity to make jams and jellies, which are a galaxy away from the flavor and texture of the commercial substances of the same name. This is how our great grandparents lived, and even as we drift off to an impossibly sound sleep, we marvel at how much more our lives have come to mean. May you and yours continue to do fine.

Store what you eat, and eat what you store.
If you do not like tuna and oatmeal you are not going to change your mind about them because the grocery store is empty.
Don't store dry beans if you don't know how to reconstitute them. It's not like opening a can and heating up the contents.
Be thoughtful about what you realistically like and try to store those items, or you will be tossing your storage in the trash in a few years.
This was a great video so I don't like coming in hot like this, but this is a huge investment. And I have some safety concerns. A pinch of salt will not make water safe to drink if the water is dangerous. If you think you can just salt your food and it will be safe to eat for longer, you are putting yourself at serious risk!!! Learn how to do these things before you try to do them in an emergency, please!

You could always plant the beans and restore your supply. If you don't like beans keep in mind that you can grind them into flour or barter them. It is crazy what you learn to like when you are hungry, and beans can be flavored to taste delicious.

    • @karrielangston4005
      @karrielangston4005 9 месяцев назад +9

@TheSeeshannon96 Good job thinking outside the box with the beans. It's too bad that more and more people have no place to plant anything.
I'm going to disagree that you learn to like something you do not when you have no food. You may eat it, but you won't for long if you have a choice. And your quality of life will go down. There is a lot of information out there that says people didn't eat it when they needed it. So why let something you will not rotate or eat take up space and money??? Just purchase what you will rotate and enjoy.

The food that lasts the longest is the most economical, and usually less expensive. Your philosophy about basing your storage on family preferences is very sound, especially if you still have young children . They won't even notice anything is different. In fact, if I still had young kids, I'd plan a surprise dinner regularly of something they like, and be sure there was plenty of it in the stockpile. I have a weakness for peanut butter cookies and instant pudding myself. Moms have a special fun gene that activates in hand times.

They definitely don't last as long as some say. Texture goes weird and gross. It's not super hard to make them, but I still don't. Water is another consideration. I bought dried onion flakes and peeled garlic in a jar, onion soup mix Is great for many dishes. Paper plates and plastic silverware will help save water and plenty of garbage bags before they disappear like toilet paper! I like to have a good nut and dried fruit mix around instead of sweets. Herbs are easy to grow even indoors, dry them by putting in a brown paper bag. Canned fruit is great cooked with chicken, I make manderine oranges and brown sugar in chicken as with also pineapple

I grew up in the 40s and 50s on a farm. Food was rationed during and for a while after WWII. If you lived on a farm you were fortunate as every farmers family canned and stored food for the year and some extra. Those who had cows shared the extra milk for eggs. Bartering was common for different fruits, vegetables and meats. Foraging for mushrooms, elderberries, huckleberries etc was common. Nothing went to waste!

Any kid who grew up on a farm knows all about being prepared. My dad never completely trusted electricity. He didn't tear down the outhouse. Never took the pitcher pump off the well when he installed the electric pump, never got rid of the wood burning stoves.

I’ve heard the pop top cans won’t last as long so that might be something to consider.
I’ve been buying 25lbs of rice and 12.5lbs of pintos every paycheck. Once I have enough for 12 people I’ll start adding more. I’m getting close. I’ve heard you need to put the rice in a freezer for a week then take out a week then freeze another week before storing. Supposedly it will kill bugs that can be in the rice and get the larvae. Has anyone else heard this?
I’ve worried so much about water. We have a small home and no room to store it. We just had our prayers answered. My oldest daughter just bought a home 5 minutes from us that is on well water. I hate to have to haul water everyday but it beats nothing. Where I live it cost $50,000 to have a well dug.

I save quart sized or larger glass jars that pickles etc come in then store pasta, beans, rice and dehydrated foods in them. I also throw in an oxygen absorber and moisture absorber to keep extra dry. Dont use used plastic food containers as they crack over time and sometimes absorb surrounding odors. Also font limit yourself to canned tuna. There are many canned meats out there from beef chicken spam corned beef etc. If you can pressure cook cm ready made meals you can eat from the jar, can meat if on sale. I am going to can up some sloppy joes, hamburger patties, taco meat, and any other meals I can make that we will eat. For Water storage we recycle gallon vinegar bottles. Heavier than regular store bottles. Since we have fish aquariums we recycle the water on a regular basis. We use filtered tap water then leave lid loose for several days to let any chlorine left evaporate before sealing tight. Then use aquarium water on garden and potted plants. Main problem is finding space to store items as we have no garage or basement.

Now, canals, rivers drying up due to changing weather patterns means big ships cannot move as easily through less water., therefore less goods getting in and onto shelves. The changing weather patterns as witnessed in storms not seen in decades, or a hundred years, fires destroying land in many countries, glacier ice disappearing faster than expected…this is a scary time and does not bode well for us.

Go to the pool section of your favorite store. Buy a box buy a container or two of Diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle it in dried items like pasta, oatmeal, and even spices this will prevent this prevents Pantry moths. These pests multiply like bunnies, and they invade and they can penetrate plastic bags of say egg noodles, and jars of spices. I'll spare you the details of how Diamatius Earth kills them, but suffice to say I've learned by experience it works to identify them, they look like regular moths except they have black markings on them. @@rachelnise2473 You are the 2nd person I noticed mentioning diabetes, I developed diabetes during pregnancy; my son will be 34 years old in July 2024. I have studied everything I could get in my hands. I have learned that I can eat almost everything my non-diabetic family and friends eat - with moderation. Get ideas by reading labels on commercial foods. Be cautious of Sodium content and unhealthy fats. Some manufacturers replace the taste appeal of sugar in food with salt or fat. Labels taught me how to alter my own recipes.
I tried using cookbooks specifically for people with diabetes. My children hated the food. Gradually I learned to use natural sugar substitutes (e.g., Stevia and monkfruit) along with herbs and spices to make food taste good, and I practiced moderation. Serving sizes are something else I learned from reading labels and recipes. Depriving yourself may lead to overeating later.
During 29 years of my 40+ years as a nurse, the Director of the hospital Medical Library sent me a photocopy of the table of contents for any journal that had information about new developments in the care and treatment of diabetes, I wasn't getting special favors. She did this for credentialed healthcare providers who told her an any area of special interest. Employees could mark an article they'd like to read and she'd send them a copy if they weren't free to come to the library to read it. She was a gem. God bless her.

Thanks for this, would've liked to see more healthy choices in this video, however for growing families, it's perfect.😀 Younger folks, unless with a condition determined by doctor (such as diabetes), generally breaks these down during daily activity.
And some expiration dates must be watched closer than others. Have noticed at stores like Big Lots & Ollies, while certain out of date items are on the shelves, others aren't, even at food pantries. Staff must go through the donations & remove any which are known to eat into lining of cans, which causes instant food poisoning, and destroyed. Same with expired pet food. On the other hand, I've eaten plenty of pasta, both macaroni type (white or wheat) & could tell no difference from a box recently purchased. It's important to ensure these boxed items that aren't also sealed inside a bag (like cereals & some brands of oats) are kept in a very dry area. This is where other methods of canning, such as Mason or similar jars, or even a food saver at home with extra bags makes a difference. I still use the Ball branded mason jars given to me by my grandmother, still after so long, the sealing part of the lid (flat & round) needs replacement now & then. Food Saver bags can be purchased in cut to fit, eliminating waste, as these bags are pricey.
Everyone NEEDS enough food to last through a crisis, be it a work layoff or natural disaster. Whenever practical & possible, if a homeowner, a basement with access to secure bunker is optimal. Obviously, it's best to do this before the home is built or pay 3x the cost (minimum), yet not always thought of. In this case, which would be expensive post home build, check Google or RUclips for videos/recommendations. Many years back, near the end of the Cold War, many were into the survivalist lifestyle & I subscribed to a (paper based🤣) magazine with many ideas. But this was in the late 70's, so cannot remember the many articles read, wished I had kept those among others.❤ Really, we have little idea what may hit us next & those who do are the lucky ones, on the other hand, there may be lines waiting to enter already mostly empty shelves. Being there 1st thing in morning is no guarantee of getting what's needed, rather knowing when restocking days & times are, to get a place in line at the right time.
    Enjoyed the video!😀

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. It's great to hear that you found the video helpful for growing families, and I appreciate your feedback about including more healthy choices.
You're absolutely right that different expiration dates require different levels of vigilance. It's essential to be mindful of the condition of items, especially when shopping at discount stores. Food safety should always be a top priority, and it's good to know that some places take measures to ensure expired or potentially dangerous items are removed.
Your tips on storage are excellent. Keeping food in a dry area and using methods like canning in Mason jars or a food saver can really extend the shelf life of certain items. It's all about being prepared for any situation, whether it's a crisis or just everyday life.
I completely agree that everyone should have enough food to last through unexpected events. And having a secure storage area, if possible, is a smart idea. It's better to be proactive in preparing for the unknown.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! If you have any more questions or topics you'd like to see on my channel, please feel free to let me know. I'd be happy to explore more subjects that interest you. Thank you for your support, and I hope you continue to find value in my videos! 😊

Question, what about the foods that is in plastic like peanut butter. It is in plastic jars and some canned fruits. Plastic deteriorates over time and gets brittle, also making food taste funny. What would you recommend and the size/portions for a single person? Thank you.

I think w tuna and mercury we aren’t supposed to eat more than two a week right? I mean if we can help it and have other proteins. Also beans, potatoes, corn, rice don’t have to be eaten in the same meal just sane day for complete protein since our body recycles proteins. Great reminders, thanks!

If you're in a survival situation, white sugar will keep you alive with its
calories. It doesn't expire, either. It'll hold you until you can get something
    better.
