    I swear Weir's guitar playing has been revived since Fair Thee Well. He's been sounding especially clear and tasteful these past few Dead and Co tours, definitely better tone than anything I hear from him in the early 90's. Warms the heart, the guy has an incredible and unique approach to the instrument that too often was drowned in the mix or forgotten about

    • @jaded777777
      @jaded777777 7 лет назад +5

      his singing too. not gonna lie his vocals at the FTW shows were rough. Dead & Co has really gotten him back into the groove i think and he sounds great now.

    • @jamesfalconi8533
      @jamesfalconi8533 7 лет назад +3

      Completely agree, overall all vocals at FTW left a lot to be desired (Phil singing Eyes was tough). I think Mayer puts a fire under him because 70's Bob and John would have been quite the pretty boy competition lol. Whatever it is, its nothing but gold for us the fans.

      Blame Healy. He was notorious for lowering Bob in the mix. So much so that it was one of the deciding reasons that led to his firing. Or so the story goes......

      I adore the Grateful Dead, but that is wild hyperbole. Just because you have some nice voicings and inversions does not make you the greatest ever -- not even close. Jerry may be the best pure lead guitarist ever, but Bob played his part and had the personality and the enthusiastic singing.

    • @craigjohnson2614
      @craigjohnson2614 2 года назад

      Bobby played “lead rhythm guitar.” His style was almost completely unique. I believe he became the main orchestrator. He often led and “reminded” Jerry. He is definitely the best of something.

  • @deadtimber

    IMHO, these kinds of impromptu collaborations is what really makes the festival shows special. Improvisation is what the Dead kept alive over the decades while much of the rock world gravitated towards "play the album version", and it's what makes live performances worth going to all these years. (The jazz world never forgot this.) Thanks for posting Suwannee!

  • @pedkab75
    @pedkab75 7 лет назад +11

    Trey playing with The Dead has made him a different guitar player. Hearing him play so well acoustically with Bobby exposes a completely different dynamic regarding his style. It'd be wonderful if Phish did more acoustic sets.

    • @SuwanneeHDStreams
      @SuwanneeHDStreams  7 лет назад +1

      pedkab75 I could get into that! Bob and Trey played so well together.

    • @pedkab75
      @pedkab75 7 лет назад +1

      Trey played much cleaner with a more mature, note-for-note proficiency with The Dead than he has with 3.0. He didn't rely on whale-calls & effects during the "Fare Thee Well" tour. Also, he had to adjust & compensate his timing to lock with Bobby. Listening to '16 Phish shows allows you to hear a new confidence in his playing from all the studying & work he did in '15.

    IMHO - trey's lack of familiarity with the dead's music/lyrics/feel/groove is again awkwardly apparent .. just like in the FTW shows. IDK why they want to keep collaborating .. i guess he draws a crowd. Mayer, on the other hand .. you can tell he is intimate with the music.

    • @TheTestingGrounds
      @TheTestingGrounds 7 лет назад +1

      You are right about Trey drawing a crowd. What's important is for Trey to be the link between the Dead's music and Phish's (huge) audience. Which is to say the Dead want Phish to sort of embrace the Dead, and recognize the Dead were the blueprint for what has become the Phish phenomenon. Same with John Mayer.
      I think he's brought some of his audience over to the Dead side. You can hear Mayer fans make the most ridiculous comments about him being almost as good as Jerry, or he adds something that enhances the music, etc. The members of the Grateful Dead are trying to build on the legacy for generations to come. Now if Dead and Co. really wanted the best guitarist around, his name is John Kladecik. Personally I'll take Furthur over Dead and Co.

      If I am not mistaken, Weir was encouraging to Trey to bring his own style to the Music. He isnt Jerry, is Obviously never going to be, but you could have said the exact same thing if you plugged Jerry into Phish. The only musical similarity is the improvisational element. As far as John Mayer goes, Between his play and Oteil channeling Phil Lesh, Dead and Co. are GREAT!! I say we dont critique, and let the music be what it was meant to be, a reflection of the musicians soul.
