    The sequence from around 12 minutes onwards to when they fly over took my breath away. Not a sight I thought I would ever see. And to think around 80 years ago they would have been trying to blow each other put of the sky!! Brave men all back then. Wonderful tribute and an amazing sight. Thanks for that. Very special indeed

    I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Herb Tischler in Fort Worth circa 1996 while he was reverse engineering these 262's. He and my Father spent two hours talking about engineering. Both had grown up during the war. Was a pleasure. Great to see one of them up in the air. I believe there were five total being built at the time with United States Navy Pensacola museum providing an original for the reverse engineering.

      Hi John, the Me 262 has no ejection seat?

    • @gazza2933
      @gazza2933 Год назад +1

      @@meertenwelleman4600
      Interesting one
      According to Google.
      Me 262 pilots did rarely eject from their aircraft during WW2. I find this a bit strange as the seat was a British invention circa 1945.

    • @meertenwelleman4600
      @meertenwelleman4600 Год назад

      Hi, they did not eject because they landed safely or were killed in action?

    • @frankkeustermans1223
      @frankkeustermans1223 Год назад +2

      @gazza2933
      The ejection seat may be known for the fine werk Martin Baker did after WW2, but it was by no means a British invention. The He-162 and He-219 already had them at the end of the war…

    • @Dave5843-d9m
      @Dave5843-d9m Год назад +1

      Martin-Baker started to investigate pilot ejection systems from 1934. Germany and Sweden proposed similar systems in 1938. MB concluded that an explosive-powered ejection seat was the best solution.
      The first practical use by a British pilot was in 1949, during tests of Armstrong Whitworth A.W.52 flying wing aircraft.

    Saw the 262 at RIAT. AMAZING to see fly!! Also it is great to see the RR Spitfire return 'home' as she was part of the BBMF until she was sold to fund the repair/rebuild of Hurricane LF363 after her crash landing in the 1990s

      LF363- broken camshaft if i recall correctly. Quite a bizarre failure. Not sure if there was a panic x-ray regime for other Merlins after that.

    As others have said the overhead pass at 15 and the solo 262 at 20 is something else. Both spits are tail up almost immediately and off the ground soon after. Surprised at the tardiness of the Mustang on take off. Also demonstartes the main issue with the 262 is that it requires a very long take off and landing distance so can be be picked off easily. Formidable in the air is the 262 and if Mr H. would have used it as a fighter rather than a fighter bomber there may have been a different result. The English Electric Lightning came less than ten years after the second world war thanks to the work of Sir Freddie Page, an aircraft that is still exceptional today. A time when anything was possible and great people made sure it happened!

    Technically the Meteor beat it by a couple of weeks, and there were vague plans to make the original Whittle test bed aircraft into some kind of interceptor. The latter didn't happen, obvs, but the Meteor was JUST first into action.
