For anyone curious, LDA is Left Distorted Abomasum.
Abomasum is the 4th stomach that is similar in structure and function of a human stomach.
It's location is at the bottom as it wraps around behind the 3rd stomach (Omasum).

It depends on a lot of factors. Usually cows after birth have a lot less pressure in their abdomens. That combined with an inflammation of the stomach because of change to more concentrated food can cause the abomasum to move to an irregular place and/or twist.

I am actually curious about this procedure. I highly doubt the cow would have died from this as they are extremely resilient. However I am curious about the stitches. After the gases have dissipated after a few days, and stitches are removed, how bad would the irritation in the stomach lining be?

Half of the cows that I have had die while working with 4H and FFA as well as a veterinary intern, died from this. It’s a very dangerous situation. An extremely lucky cow can be saved but most wont make it.

The stitches were to keep the organ in the proper place.. Keep in mind that food is heavy and may make a chamber move out of position and cause the food inside not to move through like it should.. The thread is probably dissolving and will disappear.. He cut it so there was excess outside..

i seen another vet cut the cow open while it was awake but it was tied and sedated
she then flipped the stomach the right way and sutured it, stitched the cow up, and it was 100% fine! started eating again right away, and it lived
    he could of done that

    • @AlmaWadeCrymsm

He literally said in the video that he didn't want to tranquilize it for fear that it might not wake up. Doing stomach surgery on a conscious animal is also certainly not an option.
