  • Part 5 of our annual service. In this video we show you how to change the gear oil in the lower unit of a Yamaha Outboard motor. This is a 2014 50hp Yamaha outboard, but the process is the same for most makes and models of outboard motors.
    In this video we use:
Mercury/Quicksilver Hi performance Gear Lube: canadawidemari...
    Drain Plug Gaskets: canadawidemari...
    Lower Unit Pump: canadawidemari...
And don't forget, if you are unsure of what parts you need, or have any questions we are here to help: canadawidemari...

I’ve watched a few different videos you have on outboard maintenance. Thank you for being very thorough. I recently bought an older boat with a 2020 Yamaha 50hp. Not sure how many hours the engine has (previous owner didn’t know either) so I want to make sure I take care of all the maintenance. New to boat motors but after watching these videos I feel a lot more confident to take care of the yearly maintenance myself. Again thank you for posting these and being thorough.

Amazing video. I have an F40 Yamaha outboard and thanks to your videos, I have been able to do most of my 100hrs inspection. However, I came on a problem with the bolts of the lower unit. One of the 4 bolts on the side doesn’t move and I have damage it while trying to remove it and the one below the trim tab was completely stuck and as soon as I have tried to remove it, it broke. Do you have any idea how can I fix it? I would really appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.

lots of heat. I use a portable propane torch to heat the aluminum all around the bolt. You will be surprised at how much heat you can get into it without damaging the finish.

@@CanadaWideMarine I can see that it would be a great asset for a marine mech as yourself looks like a great piece of kit .

I overfilled mine (with an extra pump or two) after re-capping the vent screw and lube came out of the fresh water flush vents…? Do I have a gasket leak, or is there a pressure relief function that I activated?

You definitely have a seal leak. Time to drop the lower unit and reseal.
