The US made vehicles that were made to be an answer to inexpensive foreign imports were as a whole so awful that the result is the rapid increase in cars such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla that are still good cars today. You don’t fight to be competitive in a market by making cars that are unreliable and unsafe. These “ventures” by Detroit were made worse because of shoddy construction and by having labor costs raised so high by unions that now many Us cars aren’t even made in the US!
The Vega was a fun little car to drive had lots of get up and go and didn’t rust out any faster than any other car of the day
I owned a 75 Plymouth Duster and put 200000 thousand on it with no rust problems
