  • "Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power shines a bright light on the vital contribution of Black artists made over two revolutionary decades in American history, beginning in 1963 at the height of the civil rights movement. The exhibition examines the influences, from the civil rights and Black Power movements to Minimalism and developments in abstraction, on artists such as Romare Bearden, Barkley Hendricks, Noah Purifoy, Martin Puryear, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Alma Thomas, Charles White, and William T. Williams. Los Angeles-based artists appear throughout Soul of a Nation, and more deeply in three specific galleries, foregrounding the significant role of Los Angeles in the art and history of the civil rights movement and the subsequent activist era, and the critical influence and sustained originality of the city’s artists, many of whom have lacked wider recognition.
Featuring the work of more than 60 influential artists and including vibrant paintings, powerful sculptures, street photography, murals, and more, this landmark exhibition is a rare opportunity to see era-defining artworks that changed the face of art in America." - The Broad
“So what’s is the next step after Soul of a Nation? Is this the beginning of the retrospective for black art movements? Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963-1983 was a great insight into the artistic movements that existed during the Black Power era and serves as a visual history. Are era-based retrospectives the best way to understand the African-American contribution to the global art world? As I write this essay I think of what I’ve learned just by observation. The research of artworks allowed me to understand the artists backgrounds, their materials and how their use of them helped to change and develop the practice of art making. “

Peace, I truly enjoyed this and received inspiration. I was just speaking to my teenager about the lack of Black Art education in schools. I'm emailing this to her today. I added several of these artists to my Pinterest for inspiration and continued research.

This is a wonderful commentary on Black Art but there are two groups that were at the forefront of the black Arts Movement that are not mentioned. I do not see HOW they were left out as they were instrumental in the history moving forward. The 20th Century Artist and the Weusi Artist Collective are two group that help this movement tremendously.

This exposition missed a large chunk of the Black arts Movement, the WEUSI Artist Collective from Harlem, New York as they were the forerunners (1965 ) to Afro Cobra. This is good but could have been great with more inclusion of correct information.

The Black Arts ovement was such a creatively rich period in world history. The recently published book, TRYIN TIMES from the Pyramids to the Projects was born out of this very powerful movement. Below find a poem from the book. (avil/Amazon)
    REPARATIONS
    Stop interfering with our way...
Can the one that destroys, ever really repair?
Do we have it within us to repair ourselves
or have we been so destroyed, there is no hope and the God has to settle this?
Niggas been crying for reparations for the longest... Will The ones whose economy that is built on free labor now construct a new way, and tear down the old?
Can the one who's education is constructed on half truths and lies, now be humble and honest? Can the nature of the beast, who has perpetuated endless horrors, now change its nature and start doing good?
Have we've been so fooled into thinking it's appropriate to put a Band-Aid on a gushing wound?
Reparations... ask the native Americans and the Indigenous people all over our planet, about how reparations are working for them.
