I’ll never forget the first time I tried a different banana variety- I couldn’t believe they could taste complex, slightly tart, and in this one’s case, slightly citrusy. It was so amazingly delicious! I immediately decided to start growing some and am continuing to search for particularly tasty varieties! That seda banana you tried looks great! Everyone out there in the US who likes bananas even just a little bit should make an effort to seek out unusual banana varieties. We’re SO limited in what we have access to that most of us have no idea these other ones exist! I sure didn’t!

Absolutely! There are over 1000 varieties of bananas out there and the one we get is one of the least interesting.

Missing many other bananas commonly enjoyed in Mexico. To start, all of the bananas you tried have different uses, only a few eaten raw, as you did it. Some are ONLY used for cooking, others are eaten roasted, like the one what you called 'Red Banana', Platano Manzano (Apple Banana), which has a wonderful flavor once it's fire roasted and served hot, drizzled with sweetened condensed milk as an afternoon street snack (sold on portable wheeled smoke wood ovens on the streets). One of the most popular you missed, was the overgrown 'Macho Banana'. An essential ingredient in many hi-end Mexican dishes, such as the famous Mole Poblano (the 30+ ingredients exquisite chocolate sauce) and many others. Great video. Cheers

There is a very similar red banana easily found in Singapore. Not sure if it is the same species to the Mexican ones. Yup, those found here in Singapore also have a slightly tougher skin to peel unless they are very ripe. I find them sweeter and also have a nicer fragrance to the Cavendish.

I had red bananas in Mexico last year. They blew all other bananas I had out of the park. I think yours wasn’t ripe enough. They need to be a bit darker. To me they blew normal bananas out of the park. I haven’t tried that berry banana tasting one though so I’ll trust you. Gosh I want to try those!

Hi just subscribed and am binge watching your videos. I saw a couple of videos where you talked about grapes and they don't have a whole lot of flavor to you. I was wondering if you have ever tried concord grapes. I find them to have a strong 'grape' flavor with the skins being a bit tough and tart but the fruit sweet. They are excellent jam and wine grapes. They ripen in the cooler autumn days if I remember correctly.

The Silk banana is called 'Manzano' here because the flavor is suggestive of green apples, and is one of my favorites. I find red bananas somewhat astringent unless they're very soft.

Love your series! And your ability to finely discern and distinguish the varied components of flavour really makes it useful and interesting. But PLEASE, get the locals to help you pronounce the names properly. I know Americans aren't big on other languages, but it's embarrassing. Plus, for instance, if you had been able to say 'seda' properly ("say-duh"), it would have been immediately obvious to Spanish speakers that the reference is to silk.Just saying :). By the way, 'tabasco' is named for its geographic origin, in the Mexican state of the same name.

  • @nycbearff
    @nycbearff Месяц назад

The "tabasco banana" is a cavendish raised in the state of Tabasco. The soil and weather it's grown in affects the taste of a banana, like most other plants, so where a banana is grown affects its quality. Mexican food in Mexico is complex, varied and sophisticated. If the only "Mexican" food you know is American Tex Mex food, real Mexican food is a wonderful revelation.

in my country , i remember the seda as being called silk/sill fig. (in my country, we call bananas figs)
i dont see the silk fig(banana) any more, sometimes i see the grosmichel, but i do luv the cavendish, i prefer it to the grosmichel.
other than that, there is a cooking fig(banana) that remains green when ripe, only it gets a bit brown then brown spots when over riping. i like that..

  • @DJ_Bonebraker

They actually carry the red bananas on a fairly regular basis at the local Food Giant here (I live near Gettysburg, PA)... Of course they also carry Plantains, due to the large Latin American immigrant population in the area, so that might explain it. I like to get the red bananas when they have them in.
On a side note, I have some banana trees in my yard that are the hardiest variety of banana in the world (they have wintered over in the ground for the past 2 winters & come back in late spring), but the growing season here is too short for them to actually get bananas, and considering that they are grown as a fiber crop (similar to Manila hemp bananas) & the fruits are chock-full of seeds that are about the size & general hardness of buckshot, I doubt you'd want to eat them anyways... Still at least I can say I have bananas growing in my front yard in southern PA, lol.

I am not sure how they develop new varieties. Since edible bananas are seedless, they can't be bred. Do they just remake the original hybridization over and over from the seedy ancestral species and hope for something interesting? Or are bananas just super-prone to mutation (radioactive potassium isotopes?)?

I have never seen 'seda' bananas in Mexico. That variety is common in Peru. I seriously wonder if 'seda' bananas are not actually the same as 'dominico', perhaps grown in a different area. Also, while many have already noted this, 'Tobasco' is actually 'Tabasco', as in, the state of Tabasco-although they are grown all the way down the southwestern coast of Mexico.

Great video, have you tried macho bananas? They're huge and they are eaten super ripe when the Peel is Black.

not tobasco, but Tabasco, its the name of the region/state, just like the "chile" and the sauce

    Seda, pronounced “say-thah,” means “silk.”
    “Morado” means “purple.”
Tobasco is the name of a Mexican state, so that might be where they are grown, as opposed to the name of a variety.
