    For the first time ever, I rode in a car that literally gave me motion sickness. This 1968 Buick Riviera is what is called a pro touring car. The only thing that remains of it's original self are the roof and doors, everything else has been transformed to go fast. Give John a follow on Instagram @ripnriv to see more.

    If he had the money to build that car then he has the money to put in the gas tank. This car is badass to say the least. 780HP/ 718FPTQ on a N.A. engine, now that's pretty freaking awesome. Also most of the car is Carbon Fiber, so he made it a lot lighter than a stock 68 Buick. He's got the biggest tires I've ever heard of on a car and yet he's got them all the way around. Not to mention he built a lot of the suspension. This guy is amazing. Great job building this 68 Buick. Absolutely amazing man.

      Jeff Froment yeah I was really impressed by that big of a number naturally aspirated. Buick engines aren’t as powerful as the big block chevies or at least they can’t breathe as well as the big block contemporaries and a big block Chevy has a tough time reaching that number. Very amazing. Must have done really extensive work to the cam and heads to have it flow that well.

      D Lugo right he did an amazing car. I love the fact that it's got 780HP and 718 Pounds of Torque on a naturally aspirated engine. You don't see that to much on a N.A. engine. Absolutely Amazing Build.

    • @theeoddments960
      @theeoddments960 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah but the sad part is that Buick engines besides the 455 aren’t really highly regarded. I’ve got a Buick 350 in my skylark and it’s had extensive head porting that was done across the country and a fairly large camshaft (provided by the last guy who owned it cause I’ve only had it for a couple months) and it’s a lame motor. 310 horse MAYBE and there was a lot of money involved in shipping those heads to Texas. Same amount of money in say a small block Chevy 350 you’d be making 400 horsepower and it would scream pretty good. Buick motors always have a bigger stroke, and in many ways it’s just not practical.

    • @debonairecatalina6570
      @debonairecatalina6570 5 лет назад +3

      @@theeoddments960 the Achilles heel of most of the Buick motors were the heads' intake ports and valve design, the ports were narrow and the valves were typically small in diameter. Which was intended for smooth driving and meant to get more torque to move the car at the start, they never really were designed for high performance applications, with the exception of some

    • @theeoddments960
      @theeoddments960 5 лет назад +1

      Debonaire Catalina65 you don’t need to tell me that. The 350 in my skylark was shipped halfway across the country to get potted and polished and it’s still lame. I’ve heard that there are going to be new aluminum head coming from some other company but it would cost literally 2 grand on a mediocre motor anyway. Flowing is a major problem and at least in my case it’s not worth messing around with my motor.

    Cars like this were often a kid's first second hand car in the 70's and 80's. We used to hop em up a good bit back then. Any car I owned was mostly street illegal and more like a stock car. Radios were pointless. You couldn't hear them in the first place over the headers. Those were the good days.

    i had a '67 Riv, 430 stock engine (low-revving, kinda weak oiling issues). I always wanted to swap my 430 Buick with a Chevy 454. My Riv did hot have posi-rear end. So it was a peg leg rear end. (sad face). Nevertheless, I did do this: I put in a B&M shift kit for the Turbo 400, i deleted the rear resonators and i had a local shop re-do the exhaust and put it out the side, and replaced the air intake with a high flow kit (at the time). With all that, my 4,400 lb '67 Buck Riv still did 0-60 in around 6.8 seconds. Top speed was around 140 mph. i was really stupid with this car...one time, around 1AM, me & and a friend of mine clobbered an '80 L88 'Vette - we topped out around 105 mph. In a 35 mph zone.

    Dude, that car is three years younger than me, man. I grew up with big American cars. My dad had a 67 Buick Skylark til the gas crisis of 73. He had a Ford Pinto for about 2 or 3 months, but it was too small for him, he couldn't wear his hat or it would rub the headliner, and his knee hit the dashboard every time he let the clutch out. He had a Dodge Dart (No idea what year) til 76, when he bought a new Skylark from a dealer. It got sold in 79 when he passed. First car I drove was my mom's 74 VW Rabbit. Bottom of the line, AM radio, no power brakes, no power steering, no a/c, 4 speed... First car I bought was a 74 Nova in 83. It had 3 on the tree and a 250 inline six-banger. I blew it up. Then I had a 78 Nova with a 350 and a turbo 350 automatic. I wrecked it. Then after that I had a 78 Chevy Monza with a Buick V6, 4-barrel, 4-speed... I blew it up. I had a 72 Chevy one ton 4x4 pickup that had 220,000 mi on it when I bought it. I blew that up too. Then I had a 70 Pontiac Tempest that I bought for $50 bux, I drove it for 4 months, til the transmission shat the bed. Then I had a 73 Chevy flatbed with a built small block 400, 4-bolt mains, Crane cam, Edelbrock intake, Holley 850 double pumper, Doug Thorley headers, Summit clutch, M22 Muncie 4-speed, 3.73:1 rear end... I blew that motherfucker up too. Then I had a 72 Buick LeSabre that I wrecked, a 69 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup, an 80 Dodge Aspen, two 87 VW Jettas, one 5-speed, one automatic, an 84 Jeep Cherokee, a 72 Chevy Impala, a 91 Pontiac 6000 wagon that I got off my brother, an 89 Chevy S-10 pickup, a 94 Buick wagon, same thing as the 6000 wagon, a 92 F-150 which is still sitting in my back yard, an 03 Dodge Ram 1500 which I wrecked the dogshit out of, and an 03 Ford E-150 work van, which is still on the road. And that's not counting my ex-wife's 86 Cutlass, or the countless company trucks I've driven, and the company truck I drive now. Bottom line, dude, you're shitting yourself going around bends in a car that's built for that shit! Don't be afraid of your vehicle, or it'll fuck you.

With 780 HP I was sure that I was going to see forced induction and there is nothing there, so now I am scratching my head wondering how all the power is produced. The cam does not sound wild enough for 780, so I'm thinking that there has to be some kind of variable lift to tame the idle.
    I can see those custom A frames that John was talking about, very nice. Many people do not fully appreciate the benefits of reduced unsprung weight, but keeping the tires on the ground is the name of the game. I really like this version of the Riviera. So, if it can beat Supercar, then go against them at a track and prove it! That being said, I would take this car over ANY super/hyper car out there! TRULY AWESOME.

    Please double check your harness set up. 45degrees is generally max down angle from your shoulder top to anchor point. You can do serious back injury to yourself. A harness mount bar behind your seat would help be sure you don’t hurt yourself. The seat will not support the belt in a crash. Please stay safe and look into a proper harness bar set up. Cool car, protect yourself so you can do other cool projects.

    If you have ever seen a stock a BUICK GSX 455 in a drag race. You’d think there is nothing that pulls like that off the line. I watched a GSX at a drag race in a small town in Central Montana in 75’.The car was from Billings Montana and was painted in a color changing paint . Called FLAWLESS

    The looks of this thing. It just looks beastly from the outside. Didn't realize it was a Riviera at first. I really like the boat tail style that came out a few years later.

    It;s original 430's development has an amazing history. The factory kept over-building the bottom end thinking the block was cracking because of the bottom end. By the time they figure out the problem was elsewhere, they had an over-built block that could be bored to 455 no problem. I'm not much for chopping up old classics, but this one was done in such a mosterous way even I like it. Have owned 3 '60s Buicks and all were engineered very well.

    That's friggin slick!! I had a 71 Wildcat with a bb455 and that thing stock was fast as hell. I used to eat the Iroc alive back when they first came out. My buddy's dad worked as a salesman at a chevy dealership in Jasper Alabama and he'd ride home different cars all the time and Tommy n i would street race all different kinds of cars against my Buick. Good times! Beautiful car there brother. Very nice! ✌

      Richard Kimbrell beating irons is as easy as throwing a hotdog down a hallway. Stock 3rd gens we’re slow as hell and that would give me as much street cred as saying I beat a 2009 impala SS. If anything it just puts you down on the totem lol
