Any forging tips I missed? Are you ready to try forging?
I have 1 question for you....you left a lot of meat on this forging but I know you have a 2x72 grinder that can hog material off when you need to but for some of the beginners out there what thickness would you suggest for a blade be forged down yo if they are using a 1x30 or 4x36? Always enjoy the videos and appreciate the time and effort you put into them. 💪🔨 🔥 💧 🗡
@@cae2487 If you don't feel like forging it down more, the angle grinder with a 1/4" disk is your friend. That's what I'll probably use and show in the next episode. 👍🏻 I was getting tired of hammering and saving material was not my #1 priority since I have enough leaf spring to last me years.
First off, awesome intro video, really well done. As for forging tips you missed, I would say drawing over the horn. Especially with 5160 being so stubborn until you really work it down, the horn combined with the rounding head can save you so much time and shoulder strain. Also, possibly, working across the anvil for a reverse taper while forming the tang / handle portion to save a little time and reduce sweat equity. Just my thoughts, hopefully they are helpful. Regardless, another awesome video, thank you for sharing it!
@@bjornronaldson6017 those are good points. I mentioned the round edge of the anvil for that type of thing. With the price of anvils these days, fewer and fewer beginners are going to start with actual anvils though. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@TyrellKnifeworks that is a very, very valid point.
A comment for the RUclips algorithm day 10. Get this guy to recogmended! Best knife maker out there, keep it up! Hope i one day will be able to get one of your knives!:)
Thanks brother! I have knives up in my webstore now. 😉
@@TyrellKnifeworks Great, ill check them out👍Still gonna keep like and comment for the algorithm though:)👍
Thanks, I appreciate that. 👍
I really appreciate this knife forging video. Looking forward to the next one. You and Eric Rivers really educate us beginners. Thanks!
I'm glad it was helpful, Joseph! Thanks for watching!
Thank You Sir really appreciate your time for making this video for the Beginners who are looking at getting into Blade Smithing with the basic tools like myself
I’m happy they are helpful, Trevor! 👍
The video I didn’t know I needed! You answered so many questions that I had from watching your other videos, keep up the great work.
Thanks for checking it out, Ed!
Thanks so much for doing this! I've never seen someone do this indepth of a break down before. I can't wait for the next one!
I’m happy it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Tyrell, I’ve been watching “forging the beginners knife Part 1” I am not a forger but appreciate those who have these skills. Thank you for your instruction and patience with your audience. I particularly enjoy your sense of humility and eagerness to learn!
Thanks, John! It seems so many are interested in learning so I’m happy to go through it. 👍
Yea buddy! Welcome to my world. Beating leaf spring down to knife thickness is no joke. Can't wait to get back to it after surgery. However, as soon as I can, I'm gonna take a page out of your book and build a press. Great job bro.
Thanks brother! Yeah, I was thinking about you for sure. 3/8” leaf spring is no bueno! 🤣
Liked the tip for stretching on the edge of the face! This is going to be a class. 👍
Thanks for watching, James!
Looks like it's going to be a great series, thanks for helping us beginners. I was great seeing your work at Blade Show West, beautiful stuff.
I'm glad its helpful! Thanks for stopping by at the show!
How hammering in the bevels makes the blade start curving back the other way is so counter intuitive, kind of. But 2 seconds of thinking about it while observing the phenomenon in real time really brings the technique into focus. I'm taking a bladesmithing class this weekend here in Oakland. Watching this as a warm. Looking forward to moving into smithing from stock removal :)
You have to think about it as where the steel moves as you hit it. Where in Oakland, at the Crucible?
great video denis thanks it will help with my forging i learned some stuff for sure Mark
Thanks, Mark! I’m glad it was helpful. 👍
Great video, awesome "How To," thank you!
Thanks so much!
I've seen Lin Rhea (who is my absolut favourite bladesmith- he doesn't need belt grinder - literally) use round bar to hammer handle part where the first finger goes. I believe that it works even better than the horn.
BTW: did you watch Jason Knight video (BLADESMITHING | Forging Without A Power Hammer | Basics). If you didn't you should watch it- He shows how to use edge of the anvit to maximize power of each stroke. It's very helpfull especialy on thick bars. Great video, as always!
I mentioned the edge of the anvil in the video. Like I said, I’m certainly no forging expert. Jason and Lin are certainly masters at the craft 👍
Watch shurap. Dmitri Shevchenko makes some stunning blades.
@@liquidmidnight0748 he sure does!
Great tips Denis! Gotta love forging 5160 huh? It takes a lot of force to move. That's why I got the 3lb rounding hammer from Elijah, of course he uses a 5lb rounding hammer daily... which is wild.
Yeah it sure does take a lot of effort! Particularly when its 3/8"! My rounding hammer is about 2.5lbs, I can't imagine using a 5lb!
Ya man I use a 4 pound hammer on leaf spring, it's tough stuff.
I wish I was, that'll be down the road a bit.
Thanks for the information!
Glad it was helpful, William!
My one and only knife I forged so far is from a large machine chain link. Similar shape to your leaf end. My best tip for anyone hitting springs or leaf's. Don't try to move the metal if the piece is not hot. You are wasting energy. Keep it at least bright orange when you are trying to get metal to move. And use a hammer that don't wear you out. I could swing my 2lb a lot more than my 3lb. More accurately. Thus getting better hits.
Denis, Love your work and tips. Thanks for putting these videos out.
That is an excellent tip that I didn’t mention. Keep your work hot! 👍
Awesome video
Thanks for checking it out, Darrell. 👍
Great job 5160 is a tough one to move I use it for hardy tools and such
Yup, particularly 3/8"! Managed to make a knife-shaped object at least. 😜. Thanks for watching
Never clicked like so fast :)
Thanks, Richard! I appreciate that!
Great tutorial! Thanks very much for posting this, and for making this series.
Thanks for watching, I’m glad it’s helpful!
Wwwwwaaawww sooooo good 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿❤️❤️😍😍😍
Thanks for watching!
Great video Dennis 5160 doesn't move very well does it I have to ask when you're going to post the knives on your website that you didn't sell at the show
Yeah, it doesn’t move so well, particularly when it’s 3/8”! I have knives posted on the website already. Only one hunter and the chef knives are left though.
@@TyrellKnifeworks for some reason I can't get your website to work it takes me there but there's no shopping cart or anything anymore

I’ll have to look that one up. Thanks for joining the channel!
👍🇷🇺
Solid information!!! Thanks for sharing its always appreciated. Keep the hammer swinging.
Thanks for checking it out, Cory!
@@TyrellKnifeworks no problem bud I really enjoy the work you do and think its absolutely incredible that you willingly share your knowledge with all of us. I think your channel has the ability/potential to grow into a very large channel and I hope that it does because you deserve it. Because of you and your videos I've tried doing things I hadn't tried before, one of those things is damascus which I finally started to tackle and now I've got a 12 layer billet currently in the works. I followed your advice and was excited that it worked. I plan on sending you a picture of it once I get closer to the finish line.
I dont know what i would give to be your apprentice
Ha, well I do teach in-person classes. Check my website. 😉
Hello sir, if I send you some titanium plates can you forge a nice knife for me ? Of course I will pay for it. 😉
Hi Olivier. Titanium isn't hard enough to make a knife. At best you'll get it around 45 hrc.. that's about 15 too low for a knife.
You're going to have to change Triple T to "Talk, Tips, and Teaching!" 😁👍🏽
Thanks brother!
