    Two things I REALLY appreciate about this video, first, you showing the difference between lights on and lights off, as far as what the steel looks like. Personally, I am so light sensitive that I only heat treat at night with the lights off in my shop. Second, aggravated quenching. I cringe when I see people leaving a blade completely stationary in the oil. Thank you for encouraging people to use an aggravated quench!

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 года назад +1

      I’ve never heard of it as an “aggravated” quench. I’m going to refer to it as an “angry” quench from now on. 🤣. Yes, both things are necessary and I try to explain why. 👍

    I use a thick piece of glass for one of my surface plates but the one i like the most i got from my local granite counter top shop free sample pieces that were discontinued .. Just saying there are free and very reliable options even if you were to use a fermica counter top it would be perfect for our aplications unless we build folders i really dont think a granite surface plate is even a nessary expence even for the seasond maker.. Love the video sreies by the way.. Cheers, Martin

    I didn't see any mention of an austenitizing soak prior to quench. Would you say this is unnecessary for 5160?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 года назад +1

      5169 doesn’t need a soak. As long as the whole blade comes up to an even temp, you’re good. This is why I think 5160 is one of the best steels for beginners. Thanks for watching

  • @samuraidriver4x4
    @samuraidriver4x4 2 года назад +1

    Isnt the file test straight out of the quench is filing on the decarburized surface layer?
    Need to grind that away before actually testing it properly (as you showed)
    Just found the channel through the Bowie challange and you got another subscriber

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 года назад +3

      It depends on the steel. Something like 80CRV2 has a thick decarb layer. The 10xx series tends to flake off more in the quench and you have very little decarb. 5160 is also a pretty thin layer. Certainly something to be aware of though. Thanks for watching and joining the channel! 👍

    I wish I saw this video the day it came out, and the same day I quenched my first blade. I believe I barely achieved proper blade hardness, but I wanted to ask if it was possible to heat treat and quench again? If so what other considerations should I know about?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 года назад +1

      Sure it’s possible. Just go through your entire normalization and grain refinement steps first. Then you can quench again. You can do this as many times as you need. 👍
