Do not the vast majority of air to air combat situations presently take place with the pilots not even within sight of each other?
Flight training, yes. But would this ever occur in real combat against US fighters? If the planes were close to equal, our fighters would standoff at a distance, using long-range missiles to down the opponents. They would only close for near combat when the US jets have a definite advantage. In the Gulf of Sidra incident,, the F-14 had a clear advantage. After they were attacked, they used their close-range Sidewinder missiles to shoot down the Sukhoi Su-17, while they could have easily blasted them with the long-range and more expensive Phoenix missiles. All things being fair, maybe the Russian plane could use this maneuver, but you don't fight fair in a dog fight.
@@stevesheets8653 Against planes such as the F-22 or F-35 the likelihood of getting into a WVR merge is basically zero, but in a newer 4th gen plane the likelihood goes up do to the lack of an ability to control the engagement the same way stealth planes do. Also there is still a chance during QRA intercepts that the aircraft could engage in WVR combat. although with high off boresight missiles such as the AIM-9X or R-73 Archer the fight would likely be very short.
@@terraoftime That is what I expected. Question for you, in the case of a quick reaction, and closing to visual range, would the average US pilot know enough not to put themselves in the position when the opponent could pull off, what is basically an air brake maneuver, against them? @@stevesheets8653 i don't know on the training as i am not a fighter pilot myself my guess though is that the cobra would only be used as a last ditch effort due to the cost in energy of the maneuver.

@YerffoeG DranoeL missiles can mis-fire or be unable to reach their target, you can out of BVR capable missiles on your way home when getting jumped on, the enemy can sneak up, you're too close for a lock-on etc etc.
(Sukhois and MiG engineers in planning room) Person1: We currently have an abundant amount of fuel and steel, what should we do? Person2: Should we invest it in our airforce? Person1: Yeah, since this is Russia lets completely defy air combat physics and just add a feature to this plane to make it pause in mid air, and yeah make it capable to shoot backwards while flying backwards. Also all fighter jets are the best in their own way well let's just leave them be for their own roles and not compare them to others they can't compete with.
Look at all the haters in this comment section... It is so sad.. Why cant people just marvel at how cool the Cobra is and respect the skill involved. No one is saying it is some great modern dogfight technique.. Could it have a use in a very specific scenario? Maybe, but Aviation combat is much different now.
Only the "music"'s got sod all to do with what's in the picture - it's just godawful irrelevant noise, and a very poor replacement for the original sound of the planes.
I’ve always thought that this maneuver would be incredibly risky. As soon as you start to go vertical, you’d just expose literally the largest cross section that you could actually expose. It’d be like trying to shoot the edge of a piece of paper. It’d be damn near impossible. But if you shoot it from the front - it presents a much larger target.
Do you fly planes? Hunts? Stop saying nonsense. When you don't even understand the moment of the maneuver! Why do you think you gained so much projection? Because of imbeciles "I always thought"?
When the pilot initiates this maneuver the plane climbs steeply and slows down before it stalls and the wings act as massive airbrakes. This alone puts it out of range of a missile as the missile cannot change direction so quickly. However if the pilot reacts to slowly he's a sitting duck for any gun.
@@cheems3046 they must be going real slow , if they were going at least 500kph airbraking the whole jet like that going full elevator will give you 7Gs
It was in 1985 that I saw a Sukhoi 27 at the Melbourne International Air Show climb vertically and stop. From the ground it looked like it stopped completely, pointing upwards and then it began to fall down, still vertical for a while and it began to tumble. The pilot seemed to have lost complete control of the aircraft. It fell towards the ground then suddenly roared off again and almost disappeared from view. Whether that sort of manoeuvre has any benefit in a combat situation I have no idea, but it was spectacular.
My understanding: In long range engagements (what NATO designs tend to focuss on) speed is king, throw your missiles farther, force the enemy's to chase farther. But in short range manuverability is king. If a MiG or Su (with a good pilot, not the mideast mobs) manages to get in heat seeker range, better hope you got a good wingman cause by the time you defeat the first shot hes probably on your 6 and you wont be getting rid of him
@@exist I didn’t say the plane has no engineering. I said that the maneuver has nothing to do with engineering at all. You literally have to disengage the automatic warning systems and failsafes that prevent crashes to perform super maneuvers. And the Cobra maneuver is stalling the plane to allow a tailing opponent to overtake you.
@@exist and as a matter of fact it’s correct. Aircraft aren’t built to be stalled. It’s the pilots choice whether or not they want to perform risky maneuvers by stalling their plane. Therefore the pilot isn’t using the plane in the way it was engineered to be used. Prove me wrong.
@@informationoverload2487 Unlike you, I have a Mechanical engineering degree. You can stall any plane, doesn't mean it's capable of doing thia maneuver. There's a reason very few Jets can do this, because the engineering of the actual plane has been designed this way. Everything the a craft does is based upon the engineering and design of it... Several decades before Pugachev showed off his cobra, in the early 1960s, the maneuver was performed by Swedish pilots who flew Saab 35 fighter jets. It was invented during training on how to recover from super booths (also known as deep booths) that the dual delta-tailless design on the Saab 35 tends to. The first Swedish pilots to discover Cobra were the test pilots Bengt Olow [sv] and Ceylon Utterborn [sv], who developed or invented the technology around 1961-1963.
All hail the Sukhoi. It starts the war at the airshow and the dogfights take place in RUclips comments section, and no one wins. That is why I love the Sukhoi.
In real combat, even when it would get into dogfight ranges (which is very unlikely today) there are only very few situations where you would want to loose all kinetic energy by doing a cobra. for the next few seconds the aircraft is basically a sitting duck. but seeing those birds dance, its always incredible.
thats honestly really cool, but its sad becuase there is almost no way you are getting to a [example f-22]. there is NO possible way you are winning that fight with a cobra.
I would love to see the G loading during this maneuver. There must be a very low speed envelop for this. Hell I can't even imagine this being done at much more than 250 maybe stretching to 300 knots
The manuever is for air shows only it bleeds a lot of airspeed which you cannot get back immediately unless they have better engine. It is said to be a last ditch manuever if you have only one adversary but if the other jet has a wingman the wingman would get him.
indeed its better to try and get your opponent when he's the other side in a circle with this move. Of course it also shows just how agile the plane is and no matter the angle of attack, its recoverable unlike some other planes that might fall out of the sky.

I love how the proof of the fact it is useful in combat is some footage of video games, one being bloody Battlefield (cause we all know how realistic that game is). Cool manoeuvre, but i'm still not sold on how useful it is.
Only usefull in full scale war when planes either have way to many targets or when they are forced to be enganed winhout the ability to land and re-arm. Thats why dog fights are dead, most fights today are conflights, mostly agaist rebels or 3 world countries been raped by first world countries for they resources ( russia, america, i'm talking about you ).
Radar doesn't display objects flying below a certain speed. This allows them to see trough clouds. The cobra would still be probably useless tho, because if you lose all your speed and energy you are an easy target for anyone that has a visual on you.
It wouldn't. If the missile is farther away: some seconds below 40 knots wouldn't do shit. If it's close: It propably will fly on the remains of its intercept course, you trigger the fuse and boom you are gone. The cobra is airshow shit. Go and read something about Boyd.

There are just so many IFs involved, I doubt the importance of training for this maneuver in combat situation, other than to teach a pilot precision flying.
@@stevesheets8653 i don't know on the training as i am not a fighter pilot myself my guess though is that the cobra would only be used as a last ditch effort due to the cost in energy of the maneuver.
Greece - Turkey a lot
Such a beautiful plane
0:51 ... not completely correct, the Saab Draken could do it since the late 60s
correct
Also if recall correct, the plane it was invented for.
Syria used it in their mig-21 too. This was used as a defensive maneuver in the arab israeli war.
The draken litterally invented it xD
And F-22 does it flawlessly... in it's own style
The SU 35 is so pretty.
5:13 wait... Wait that's illegal
If you love planes then you really have to love this video! Thank you
The SU 37 truly is an amazing aircraft. What's little known though is a man named Igor Volk. Couple the man who is regarded anywhere as one of the best test pilots ever, and the SU 37 and magical things happen.
Iceman: He stood on his tail and I flew right by. Maverick: I saw that! Made an easy target lock. 3, 2, 1...
Movies aren't real life, you brainwashed uneducated liberal. Democrats demoralized and demonized the US military because they're globalist commies. Putin is a better leader than biden/Obama 3rd term.
This maneuver was performed almost 30 years before Pugachev. From Wikipedia:
"During the early 1960s, the maneuver was developed and performed by Swedish pilots flying the Saab 35 fighter jet."
and
"The Swedish test pilots who discovered the cobra were Bengt Olow and Ceylon Utterborn, who developed the technique around 1961-1963."
Modern fighter jets never get close enough for that maneuver to be useful. Simply play time.
@YerffoeG DranoeL facepalm....
The obsolescence of dog fighting was the worst thing the universe ever did.
Some would say the Su-57 is superior
@YerffoeG DranoeL in a theoretical sense, I say yes, you're correct. in the real world, maybe not so much.
@YerffoeG DranoeL missiles can mis-fire or be unable to reach their target, you can out of BVR capable missiles on your way home when getting jumped on, the enemy can sneak up, you're too close for a lock-on etc etc.
(Sukhois and MiG engineers in planning room)
Person1: We currently have an abundant amount of fuel and steel, what should we do?
Great clip, great aircraft!
thanks :)

Just annoying music...
Only the "music"'s got sod all to do with what's in the picture - it's just godawful irrelevant noise, and a very poor replacement for the original sound of the planes.
Russian fighters can only do this because the jet shapes?
The amount of physical stresses and the Gs that the aircraft and the pilot has to undergo.. sheesh!! It’s incredible
@@pauloguerra391 Calm your tits, Paulo. It was a legitimate question. You fucking Karen.
When the pilot initiates this maneuver the plane climbs steeply and slows down before it stalls and the wings act as massive airbrakes. This alone puts it out of range of a missile as the missile cannot change direction so quickly. However if the pilot reacts to slowly he's a sitting duck for any gun.
What the hell was that ?
Is this for real ?
Great aircraft & pilots !!!!
RESPECT .
I wonder how many g’s these pilots must feel while doing that vert
It’s little to none
@@cheems3046 they must be going real slow , if they were going at least 500kph airbraking the whole jet like that going full elevator will give you 7Gs
@@AverageDoomer69 7G is easy for a trained pilot
Titus kriswanto also with a g suit it feels like 2 g’s
Ivan Ivanov you don’t know SHIT🖕🏾
Awesome, It must give a pilot confidence to know that the jet is very capable in a mission.
If a MiG or Su (with a good pilot, not the mideast mobs) manages to get in heat seeker range, better hope you got a good wingman cause by the time you defeat the first shot hes probably on your 6 and you wont be getting rid of him
I can do this in my sleep. (only in my sleep, when I'm dreaming! ) 💤🛩🛫🛬🪂🛌😵
0:35 still blows my mind till this day. Actually insane engineering.
Dude… it has nothing to do with engineering at all. He stalled the plane.
@@informationoverload2487 So by your logic, the plane has no engineering because someone flies it... fucking moron
Just like how the B2 radar cross section is engineered to minimize it's radar signature. You're telling me this has nothing to do with engineering? You clearly have no knowledge not intelligent enough to understand simple engineering and aerodynamics...
Its the pilot, combined with the beautiful aircraft.
Amazing how these aircrafts are build light and strong. i once tried these maneuvers with my paper plane, it tore into pieces

Sukhoi and Mikoyan bureau: Let's add brakes to aircraft
Amazing. I remember watching an F14 pilot flying literally backwards once for a long while with reverse thrust. He was moving along pretty quick too.
The maneuver that starts at 5:10 in the vid is awesome!
To all those saying oh the f22 and the eurofighter would destroy the jet before it performs this manouver..Chill. Just enjoy the fucking video and how awesome the jet looks doing that. jeez..
Yeah, it's part of an AIRSHOW, not DOGFIGHT (yoyo maneuvers kill cobra in dogfights)
people don't realise that eurofighter and f22 are just about making millions for companies the Russians know how to make good stuff cheap
Great air show trick.
It's not only the plane capabilities but to do this is a mix of experience, and balls of steel
Americans: "Hit the brakes and he'll fly right by!"
Meanwhile in Vodkaville: "Ivan, why waste money on the brakes when you can be the brake"
"Let me show them a little trick I've learned!"
I think most comments made are wide of the mark.
This manoeuvre shows the agility of the aircraft, which is beyond any other aircraft today.
Increíble maniobrabilidad de los aviones rusos, todo un espectáculo. Muchas gracias por el video

The su27 at 0:35 - 0:47 and at 5:12 was not doing a cobra maneuver, it was doing a KVOCHUR BELL maneuver (like the su57 in Top Gun : Maverick)
In real combat, even when it would get into dogfight ranges (which is very unlikely today) there are only very few situations where you would want to loose all kinetic energy by doing a cobra. for the next few seconds the aircraft is basically a sitting duck.
but seeing those birds dance, its always incredible.
Yes and that’s not counting the other pilot going vertical or maintaining distance intentionally
thats honestly really cool, but its sad becuase there is almost no way you are getting to a [example f-22]. there is NO possible way you are winning that fight with a cobra.
Russians can do air show like no other, no mention of all the MiG crashes at air shows? Of course not...
Thats part of the charm isnt it?
How many people love Nascar just for the crashes?
Some of these pilots have obviously watched Top Gun 😂
Damn that SU35 does a Cobra then a side flip maneuver is beyond anything I've seen hahaha
It is crazy
Its called a rolling cobra
I would love to see the G loading during this maneuver. There must be a very low speed envelop for this. Hell I can't even imagine this being done at much more than 250 maybe stretching to 300 knots
The manuever is for air shows only it bleeds a lot of airspeed which you cannot get back immediately unless they have better engine. It is said to be a last ditch manuever if you have only one adversary but if the other jet has a wingman the wingman would get him.
indeed its better to try and get your opponent when he's the other side in a circle with this move. Of course it also shows just how agile the plane is and no matter the angle of attack, its recoverable unlike some other planes that might fall out of the sky.
regardless it is a beautiful aircraft i guess all enthusiast would agree on that..
try that shit in combat, a missile will be so far up your ass, you teeth with get whitened from the bleach that was used to clean the nose cone.

Thats why dog fights are dead, most fights today are conflights, mostly agaist rebels or 3 world countries been raped by first world countries for they resources ( russia, america, i'm talking about you ).
its useful because when you doing a flat stop - any radars lost your signature on couple of seconds, in real fight it can save your life
Ivan Ivanovich why the radar gonna lost your beacause yu st
Radar doesn't display objects flying below a certain speed. This allows them to see trough clouds. The cobra would still be probably useless tho, because if you lose all your speed and energy you are an easy target for anyone that has a visual on you.
It wouldn't. If the missile is farther away: some seconds below 40 knots wouldn't do shit.
If it's close: It propably will fly on the remains of its intercept course, you trigger the fuse and boom you are gone.
The cobra is airshow shit.
Go and read something about Boyd.
