- This video showcases a unique and never-seen-together collection of 1969 era drag racing photographs shot by an teenaged amateur photographer named Phil Smith at the 1969 AHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee. Narrated and produced by historian and author Geoff Stunkard, the small collection has never been seen in its entirety before. Included are the Ramchargers front engine Top Fuel Dragster, period funny cars like the Hemi Thrasher, the ex-Richard Petty #43 Jr. Barracuda, the Pandemonium 1969 Barracuda of Bob Sullivan, the Tiger Shark of George Weiler, and Bob Banning's legendary 1968 Dodge Charger. Also seen are the Dick Harrell ZL1 Camamo #1, Jim Minnick's 1969 COPO Camaro (yes, that Minnick - Top Gas racer), Bill Heilsher, and the Kimbell Bros / Bill Allen entry. B-body Mopars like Dick Landy's 1969 Flying Wedge Dodge and Ronnie Sox' 1969 A12 M-code 440-6BBL "Six Pack Road Runner. With an handful others, Stunkard give the history of the track, some of the racers, and even the spectators. Created in honor of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, this is drag racing's rich heritage of the 1960s. BE THERE? WERE THERE! Thunder....
love the picture of Bob and Shirley's Pandemonium.
Thanks for the pictures and history.😊
BRING MORE OF THIS! Loved it!
Thanks so much
Glad you enjoyed it.
Sweet! Thanks for the memories.
I love the thumnail!!!
I miss those days.
Great video Geoff. I'm looking forward to being there this Saturday for the NHRA. My favorite track!
Same here!
Thanks Geoff, very cool flashback. Love seeing the early days!!
Thanks for sharing these Pics.!!! ....Seen a MANY a fight/drunks on the concrete bleacher side back in the Day also!
Oh yeah. Closest thing to the Roman Coluseum in drag racing. The cops stayed busy on Saturday nights up there.
I rolled in here to soak up some knowledge, and dude sells me with the indian blanket and croquet set just like Grandma had.
Keep at it man
Lol... my wife noticed the same thing. Editing on the fly and guess I will need to rig something else up! Thanks-Zoo
@@gszookeeper77 don't change a thing, it's relatable and I dig it. Seriously. Adds to the nostalgia, get more of it.
Yeah, but it makes me look like the redneck I are!...lol
@@gszookeeper77 just means you understand your audience, because who do you think loves racing and wrenching
love it Geoff, thanks... Dale
6:30 Awesome Sox & Martin Road Runner. Supercar Performance Clinic! Ingenious racing program.
Love Thunde valley.❤ My home track.😊
Maybe not professional, but a damn site better than the average kid in the stands was able to produce with their Brownie Hawkeye. The photos are much appreciated, even more so with the insightful background explanation.
Thanks. They have sat for a while and I thought people would appreciate them.
Keep 'em coming Geoff...
Haha that picture of the wagon hauling the car is funny
That wss NORMAL - and the burgers were done on a Coleman stove. The track had all these creeks around it - Carrier buried 4 railroad tank cars as a viaduct under the track - I saw them come out.
@@gszookeeper77 wow! I would sure have loved to have been there, sounds amazing. Just curious, did you ever meet a guy named Joe Brooks in your time as a journalist? He was a Michigan based top fuel builder, and my uncle.
No, can't say I did, but my first IHRA race here was in 1992.
Yeah man love the history... Awesome pictures.
Thank you
Love your channel, Geoff!
Glad you enjoy it!
Always a good time with Stunkard! Well done, thanks for sharing, Amigo.
Don't belabor the image quality, etc. We're not professional photographers... hell, our eyes are older than the photos and just as "exposed". Aim for simply enjoying and sharing your detailed thoughts and memories... from you to us.
Damn Yankee? Well, you been fittin' right in fer a long time now. I'd say you are officially Rebel and formally expatriate Yankee by this point.
Appreciate that...
“Cobra Charmer” @ 4:34, not a Crosley or Morris….sectioned 50’s Ford? Nicely prepped car. Candids always show nice touches, like the WW2 Jerry can for water.
No idea- hence C/Altered. Could not tell if it was an SBC or 289 FoMoCo engine either.
@@gszookeeper77 looks like small ford power by the front distributor/mag..
Nice glass-work on the front end.
Geoff, I went to your website and didn’t see any images from this collection available. If I missed, could you add link here please? If not currently available, will they be? Research use only.
"One of these decades," I need to get somebody to update that website. Forward me an email with the images you would like. 8x10 lab prints are 15.00 each, 6.50 shipping per order. I can invoice you via paypal...

Aah, tools for the “sport” of full-contact croquet, should the neighbors get offensive.
Hey. I'm out in the country. Ya never know!
