No, step count should be automatic. Maybe you got a defective unit.

Not a GPS watch, so it needs Location from your phone.

You cannot. It pulls the time from your phone so you must pair it.

I'll pull it off the stack in the morning and check it, but I believe it has the SOS feature...but that will call whatever # you define as your SOS #.
