You missed one other big sticking point for some of the hate. 2 years ago he laid off 800 people while boasting about record profits to investors and giving himself a huge bonus.
That's a huge one he will sacrifice other smaller employees to maintain the stock prices of his company the dudes already got that 155 million dollar bonus it's insanity
@@Planag7 yeah, I was surprised when microtransactions was the 5th point. Sure people complain about microtransactions, but I dont think I've ever had microtransactions come up when discussing the hate for Bobby Kotick and Activision.
I wish you hadn't glossed over the Blizzard merge. That was a massive catalyst for their current reputation and I know there's a lot to cover there. I understand why you skipped it in the interest of the video length, but it's the area I believe a lot of folks including myself focus on.
Yeah, there simply isn't any happiness in any of the major Blizz franchises anymore. WoW is is an abomination of what it used to be, Jeff Kaplan abandoned OW2 mid development, WC3 Reforged was a shambles, Hearthstone is just a skinnerbox time-sink and most spectacularly of all, cancelling the HotS competitive scene just before Christmas right after reassuring the people in the HGC league that it would go on for another year. There isn't one thing that Blizz has done in the past 3 years that has made them respected or endeared by their fans, and they have bled a massive about of talent to start ups and to Riot which is just on the other side of town.
Had nothing to do with Activision itself as a new corp structure was created for the merged cos. Independent Blizzard exec teams fault (beloved devs of WoW) fishing for a cash out through stock comps but folks like to suk their arses for some reason.
There's a few more reasons you missed why Activision is hated: 6. Massive layoffs despite receiving record profits. Along with overpaying the CEO 7. The many, many companies shutdowns and dismantling of companies into smaller groups into an oversaturated series 8. The Downfall of Blizzard Entertainment, along with the infamous Blitz-Chun event 9. The awful Sexual Harassment/Misconduct workplace that surrounds the workplace. (Edit: I need to add a 9th bullet point because of recent events)
@Harry Engel Wyatt Cheng is one of the lead Directors of Diablo Immortal which is the free-to-play mobile version of Diablo. During BlizzCon 2018, everyone was extremely hyped for a new Diablo game after years of waiting. Then Mr. Cheng came on the stage and made the announcement that the newest Diablo game is coming to mobile and it’s free-to-play. Yeah… you can imagine the reception that Acto-Blizz received.
@Harry Engel Its basically an event where the winner of a Hearthstone tournament didn't receive his winning prize due to speaking out as Pro Hong Kong. (Which is a movement about Hong Kong trying to keep its Democratic rule from Britain. The rule was supposed to end in 2050 and then they will have to be absorbed back to China with its totalitarian government. But China began to reinforce these forces way too early than its expected.) And he got banned by Blizzard from his comments, most likely due to Activision•Blizzard not censoring his comments means that as a company they side with Hong Kong, and thus they will be removed from the Chinese market. And Activision always follows the money. So they side with China in this one
@Harry Engel wait, I got mixed up! Chug was a pro Hearthstone player from Hong Kong! During his live stream of winning a huge tournament he put on a “Free Hong Kong” as part of the protest. To please the Chinese Market, Acto-Blizz took away Chug’s winnings and banned him from competing in future esports tournaments. This cause a huge protest from the western player base and force Acto-Blizz to unbanned and return Chug’s winnings. I can’t believe I nearly forgotten this.

The posted record profits and then fired 800 people the next week. Even the board of directors started to question Bobby Kotick’s pay. He did take a pay cut recently but when your own board is saying the CEO makes to much (he was making the most in the industry at the time) that shows something is out of whack
Activision is absolute shit and really their ruining of Blizzard is a huge reason for their downfall. Hell Bobby's "Record Profit isn't enough profit" memo alone should cement him as the worst CEO in history. It spawned 900 layoffs across Blizzard. And then 6 months later many of the jobs were reopened, likely for a greatly reduced salary. They've done this tactic more than once, even.
"ruining of Blizzard is a huge reason for their downfall." Wrong, their downfall was already well underway back in the Vivendi era, Activision just gave the wrong sorts already there enough allies to drive out all opposition faster. Certain developers turned executives, who were never the original talent [but posed as if they were]; drove out all the actually talented original developers who cared about the quality of their games. Todd Howard Syndrome killed Blizzard, Activision just pushed the clock forward.
Speaking of Activision’s lack of originality, let’s not forget about their movie based games. Which is pretty much the first thing I think of when I think or hear of Activision.

Honestly, Activision is sort of like the worse aspects of Nintendo, Microsoft, and EA combined. They could gives less than a shit about their fans (Nintendo treats their fans by essentially ripping them off at every turn). They also abandon franchises for various reasons (Microsoft is getting better at not doing this, but they seem to be the company most infamous for abandoning franchises, even if it isn’t for money like in Activisions case). They also embody most of EA with shady business practices, micro transactions, and franchise abandonment. I don’t know whether ea or Activision is worse, but they’re pretty neck and neck along with Ubisoft.
Bruh you don’t know enough about Nintendo. They might make some stuff super expensive but they treat us fans very well. You can just look at My Nintendo and Club Nintendo by themselves. And yes I know that Club Nintendo shut down years ago and that My Nintendo is significantly worse. At least Nintendo has been trying to put some more physical stuff on the service. I can see why some people might not like them a ton but they know how to capture nostalgia which Microsoft and Sony either don’t know how or can do at all. The fact that Activision forces it’s studios to release a new call of duty every year no matter how broken, uninnovative, or unfinished, is good example of why people hate Activision. And to maintain this yearly release cycle once great studios like Raven, High Moon, Toys For Bob, and many others are robbed of their individuality, forced to forever work as support teams.

I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a non-consumer in our society, and that as consumers we have to take that responsibility more seriously. Despite having been a fan of Guitar Hero, Tony Hawks, CoD, Warcraft, starcraft, diablo and many other franchises under their umbrella, I have boycotted them for more than a decade now.
The benefit or positive side of computer games is a tough thing to argue for, to begin with. I was briefly a game developer in early 2000s. The hours were long. The game we made was not that fun. It published and I have credits but quite frankly it published because it had to. It was a launch title for the original xbox. The people I worked with were mostly jerks. Half of the people who worked on the game were let go after the launch. The whole thing was just not fun. The whole computer game industry thing, I think, has had the soul sucked out of it. Arcade games were fun in the 80's because if they were not, the coins would stop flowing instantly. Perhaps that's what is needed. A way of making games where the player gets it for free up front and pays a little each time they play it, a very small amount, less than $0.25. Something where either you pay now play later, or play now pay later. That would put pressure on studios to make games that are actually fun.
Unfortunately, this is what happens when you try to mass produce art. It takes a lot of people a lot of time to make a game these days. Those people need to be supported during the process. Because of unlawful government laws surrounding how companies are created and managed, which ties in to the unlawful 16th Amendment, it's necessary for artists to work under the umbrella of a corporation. Basically, the government created "laws" which, as it turns out, are against the law, in order to make money off of the people. So now you have to have people with business degrees, and whatever degree they make up to tie into that sort of thing, who live to take advantage of everything they can in order to make the most money possible out of other peoples' ideas and work coming in and taking charge. Which is why most corporate heads are sociopaths. (Not kidding. A study was done.) This right here is what ultimately kills art. Video games have always been a form of art. I'm an artist and programmer myself. Once those business people take control of art they try to find ways to streamline production and maximize profits. 100% of the time this destroys the artistic mind of the employees, and ushers in the standard negative corporate-related mindset. Like in the Bob's Burgers episode where the kids start up a company for a class. Everything was going great until the corporate side of the process destroyed the artistic side of the process. We get into making games for the fun of it; it's highly enjoyable to those of us who do it. The mental destruction of the corporate mindset will never be good for art. However, it's an absolute must if you're to be able to live off of your art. There has to be a middle ground. I'm all for bringing back arcades, and even bringing about an arcade-style of home gaming. Though the latter part has already been done in some cases (Ace Combat Infinity, for instance), it hasn't yet been done to perfection. Unfortunately, it will never be truly achievable so long as the 16th Amendment is in place. When we can strip away the largest parts of the financial bullshit the government inflicts upon everyone, it'll be easier to accomplish. Take away that stress, and we could eventually have game developers who once again can have fun at work all the way up to retirement, and not just for a few years before some asshole comes in, buys the place, and ruins it all. I hate to throw in politics, but those idiots ruin everything you can find from sea to shining sea. And it's still a valid point. On one hand, it's a good thing that the government can have the ability to be able to tell corporate leaders that they can't treat people like disposable trash, and if they do they get fined and potentially lose their ability to operate. On the other, it sucks because they can get greedy and put incredible financial strains upon businesses one way or another. There's a saying in the military; shit rolls downhill. Someone at the top says, "Let's get stupid because it benefits me." The stupidity and the strain ends up almost entirely on the little guy who has to work 80-90 hour weeks in order to "make it happen". It's the biggest joy-sucker ever. The depression is real. Real bad. When sociopaths are in control, there is no joy. By definition they don't care about people, and it's felt by everyone who works for them. But people need to eat, so they put up with it. There's a simple fix for it. But we're not at Ghana or South Africa-level yet, so it isn't going to happen for another year or two. We'll get back on track. At least I hope we will. And gaming will once again be enjoyable from concept to final product.

Like EA, it's hard to accept modern-day Activision considering their history. Both EA and Activision were the gold standard of third parties in the 80's. It's sad to see they've grown to eschew innovation in favor of maximum profitability. I will say they are up against a wildly different industry, where games are more expensive to produce while the price of them remain relatively unchanged. But they makes pretty good games(in term of single player/story mode)and always stick to their quality.the only thing they screwed up is the shark card
I remember playing the skylander games made by Activision and I loved them as a kid. But skylanders is a game where you have To buy the playable characters separate as an action figure and you placed the figure on a little stand and they showed up in the game. And one character figure was like 15 dollars and you ended up needing to buy a lot of figures if you wanted to play the game frequently because it took forever for your charecters to regenerate after dying in game. So you ended up spending more money for the charecters than you did for the game. So it's kinda like physical microtransactions that are essential to winning the game. I loved playing the games but my parents hated paying paying for them.
Honestly you missed way too much stuffs about them: layoff on the best performing year and getting bonus from it, destroying Blizzard from the inside (one of the most beloved companies), etc.
Activision in the 80s and 90s was a beloved developer whose product you were almost certain to love. Now, they're just an evil money-grubbing corporation putting out the same old schlock every year. No originality or creativity on display whatsoever. It's really sad.
Not just Rockstar but 2K too. The 2K sports franchises are just greedy as EA is with Fifa Ultimate Team. NBA 2K19 I think it was literally had a slot machine and pachinko machine in the trailer!!!! They weren't even trying to hide the gambling aspect lol
I can’t stay mad at Activision when they do right with their dormant IPs. But even those good games were tainted. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy was sort of rushed considering Spyro 3’s glitches, although some were patched from what I heard. Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled got micro-transactions after reviews of the game praised it so highly, which makes them look extra predatory. In order to release Call of Duty Warzone by the end of the year, seven developers are all supporting it including Beenox and Toys for Bob from those remakes. I can understand that last one if it’s temporary, but that’s a scary ordeal if that’s what’s needed to sustain yearly releases. SEVEN Developers.
I started to dislike them cause when I heard that sky landers wasn’t going to make anyone games devastated me as kid. Also because I was a huge fan of the series.
I feel like Rockstar Games is doing many similar things like the hated competitors like EA and Activision just to make money , squeezing GTA 5 By Releasing it on the PS5 squeezing GTA Online with low effort made DLCs and over pricing them for player to buy sharkcards (microtransactions)
This!!! I've since fell off heavily from GTA. I'll randomly think about it and go back but there have been times I'll load in, play for 5 minutes then just shut it down.
As someone who had a hand me down Atari 2600 when he was really little, as well as not following modern gaming, Activision means something different to me. I can't really remember if I inherited the titles they produced or we bought them dirt cheap, but I really remember their Boxing and Keystone Cops games. I swear I had others, but I just can't remember all the games I owned.
Keeping the Activision name was a wise move. Despite everything, thoughts of River Raid, Pitfall and Decathlon still gives me warm fuzzy feelings from my youth 🥰
It's their greed and ways to squeeze as many money out of you as they possibly can. They use disgusting psychology tricks to keep you addicted and spending money on useless pieces of pixels that you throw away the next release. They ruined Call of Duty because they moved the focus to micro transactions instead of making the game experience better. But this has evil arts in common with them.
@@clipperfan1714 So you're forced to play a certain amount of time to get the last gun every season. No thanks I'm done playing a game thats not what I love playing anymore.
I have a love hate relationship with Activision. I respect their history so much. The Venetian Blinds Lawsuit is one of my all gone favorite gaming stories. As for their games, Activision does have some talented dev studios. Toys For Bob and Beenox are both amazing, as was Vicarious Visions before they were dissolved into Blizzard. It's really the business side of Activision that I can't stand, but even then, I can understand. They're a business. Their goal is to make money. I just can't stand how they ignore franchises. I'm honestly neutral on microtransactions. I believe that there are ways to handle microtransactions properly, but every company goes overboard with them.
That was the day Activision's artistic competency died.
@@Planag7 yeah, I was surprised when microtransactions was the 5th point. Sure people complain about microtransactions, but I dont think I've ever had microtransactions come up when discussing the hate for Bobby Kotick and Activision.
I mean that's just business. if you don't need 800 people then you should get rid of them.
Activision is one of the only companies that blatantly says: "All we care about is profit"
I wish you hadn't glossed over the Blizzard merge. That was a massive catalyst for their current reputation and I know there's a lot to cover there. I understand why you skipped it in the interest of the video length, but it's the area I believe a lot of folks including myself focus on.
What... you guys don't have cell phones?
"The Decline of Blizzard, What Happened?"
IT's not a merger. Activision and Blizzard are two separate companies under one roof by the name of Activision-Blizzard.
There's a few more reasons you missed why Activision is hated:
6. Massive layoffs despite receiving record profits. Along with overpaying the CEO
7. The many, many companies shutdowns and dismantling of companies into smaller groups into an oversaturated series
8. The Downfall of Blizzard Entertainment, along with the infamous Blitz-Chun event
9. The awful Sexual Harassment/Misconduct workplace that surrounds the workplace.
(Edit: I need to add a 9th bullet point because of recent events)

@Harry Engel
Wyatt Cheng is one of the lead Directors of Diablo Immortal which is the free-to-play mobile version of Diablo.

Where’s that memo? Not saying it doesn’t exist but I’d love to see it. Dudes an asshole.
"ruining of Blizzard is a huge reason for their downfall."
Wrong, their downfall was already well underway back in the Vivendi era, Activision just gave the wrong sorts already there enough allies to drive out all opposition faster.
Couldn’t have said it better myself
Bruh you don’t know enough about Nintendo. They might make some stuff super expensive but they treat us fans very well. You can just look at My Nintendo and Club Nintendo by themselves. Sure some stuff is dumb but if you actually did your research you could easily repeal all of your bullshit. I’m not a huge Microsoft fan but what you said about them is far from their worst problems but I will always agree that they are better than EA or Activision.
@@flumpledorf people don't understand that not every game has the same value. Same way an old geo metro isn't as valuable as an old mustang. @@flumpledorf Actually out of all these companies, I’m the biggest fan of Nintendo (I own a Wii U for corn sake), so I think I know what I’m talking about when I say they rip off their fans. You seriously think I should pay 60 dollars for a Wii port with small changes and buy an amiibo for 25 dollars not scalped just to experience the full game? 85 dollars for a 10+ year old game, give me a break. The online is garbage, the ways they give us to play old content is almost non existent or very limited, and club Nintendo doesn’t even exist anymore. I’m sorry, but you’re kind of ignorant (not stupid, just ignorant). Even Activision provides better ways to play their classic games with the crash and Spyro remasters. I’m not even comparing the quality of the games to these other companies, not once did I say that their games are bad (Nintendo’s games are usually always good so there’s that), but Nintendo has an abundance of anti-consumer practices that are hard to get behind from someone who not only likes quality games, but also quality service.
@@wh4221 I know what you mean. I also own a Wii U. Yes there may be some small stuff that can be dumb but if you don’t want to buy Skyward Sword then you don’t have to. You already own a Wii U so just get the Wii version there for 20 dollars. I don’t know what game you are talking about that you bought for 85 dollars but then just don’t buy it. If you are talking about 3D all stars then you got scammed. Also if you own a Wii U (or even a 3ds) then you can already play most if not all of the retro Nintendo games you could ever want. Many of this games are just for one dollar. While yes their online service is garbage, it is the cheapest and already gives you tons of NES and SNES games for free. If you want to play game and watch games then just get a ds collection on the 3ds eshop or get one of the newer game and watch systems for the anniversaries. They keep their prices for the consoles down to draw in customers and games up because they have nothing to hold up the company if their video games completely fail. They have had the best selling console for 2.5 years because of what they do. I know they do some stuff that is very bad for consumers but so do Microsoft and Sony. I stay away from Sony completely (because ew) and really just play Nintendo and keep up with Microsoft. They both do some dumb stuff because they are large companies that can crash and burn if too many things go wrong. If you want more info then please allow me to direct you to CGP Grey’s videos; ‘Death and Dynasties’ and ‘The Rules for Rulers’. "Why Activision is hated"
Only 12 minutes long.
How have you done the impossible?
the timing of this video couldn’t be more accurate
The fact that Activision forces it’s studios to release a new call of duty every year no matter how broken, uninnovative, or unfinished, is good example of why people hate Activision. And to maintain this yearly release cycle once great studios like Raven, High Moon, Toys For Bob, and many others are robbed of their individuality, forced to forever work as support teams.
How is cold war rushed
The biggest problem for Activision is that they’re putting all their eggs in one basket with Call of Duty. If that falters, Blizzard alone ain’t gonna be enough to help them. They’ll be screwed. Putting your eggs in basket is probably the worst thing you could do as a company
Because 20 straight years at the top isnt good enough ? Lmao. The game has already died multiple deaths only to be revived like the fucking highlander.
I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a non-consumer in our society, and that as consumers we have to take that responsibility more seriously. If you complain about Activision but you buy any of the games they release, then you are actively hurting the situation, not helping it. Despite having been a fan of Guitar Hero, Tony Hawks, CoD, Warcraft, starcraft, diablo and many other franchises under their umbrella, I have boycotted them for more than a decade now.
THIS!!!
I haven't bought anything since blitzchung. Fuck Activision, fuck blizzard.
I was a GM for Wow back in 2006-2007. I was never around so many people I hated in one place ever before or since that.
This kind of sounds like demos that used to be popular back in the day
Unfortunately, this is what happens when you try to mass produce art.
@@gregbell9839 Albert Camus said sometimes to do the right thing you have to be a rebel. The only answer to this beast is to make another beast which is on your side. There are unions which are being created in the game development community, the more the better. Make a shark but it's your shark, a union.
@@kalebproductions9316 I've never been a fan of unions. They tend to be destructive. Ruining businesses and jacking up costs in order to overpay workers. But in this case it may be warranted.
You can't really have a list like this and not include their evolution of Blizzard. People can actually remember what Blizzard was like before and compare it to what it is today. That is a major reason the company is hated now.

Just found your channel today and I've been listening to your videos for the last 8+ hours while at work. Great stuff man, keep it up!
Activision seems to handle their employee relations much worse than EA, so for that reason I rationally apply more vitriol to Activision. But on a personal level, I like SSX more than I like Tony Hawk games, which I still like quite a lot. A new(ish) Tony Hawk game was released last year. The last SSX game was released in 2012. So again, personal level, I kinda hate EA more for subjecting me to watching their summer event every year hoping for some SSX, Burnout, NBA Street, Skate or Mirror's Edge title to be announced only to leave in abject self-inflicted disappointment. Both can burn and have their IPs auctioned off to indies in a perfect world.
Yeah, for all the hatred aimed at EA from gamers, it seems their employees don't see so disgruntled. And I'll risk the anger of the mob by saying something positive about Activision. I know there are exceptions, but among the AAA publishers, Activision seems to do the best job of having their games in a "finished" state at launch. EA, Bethesda and Ubisoft seem much more willing to... "Oh my God, it's an abortion! But will fix it later ;)"
I'm amazed at how many people still buy their products
I think I will forgo them now after watching this video.
i'm not.
a combination of exclusive rights on childhood favourites and a long arm owning other development studios while having those studios be the ones named on games causes enough conflict and confusion for a lot of people to keep buying anyway. there are also people who, for one reason or another, shrug their shoulders and decide to "support the game not the company" by buying the games regardless and only complaining about the problems
It's called addiction. Same reason females with black eyes go back to their aggressive boyfriends week after week.
well as long as customer puts money down for your product, investor will still invest and the CEO will still get bonus, so never understood the hate for the CEO or the company when my hard earned money is enabling and supporting them to do so year after year!
It's always easy to blame someone else for our own shortcomings I guess, rather than not buying the product!
I used to be a huge overwatch fan playing almost daily for a period but now I refuse to play and don't really plan on buying anything from them again. Right now there's a big wave of WOW players trying out ffxiv and I'm glad. Activiosn and Blizzard need to change and I hope more people ditch their games so they can finally start at least pretending to care for the player and making new and interesting games

It's funny that Activision is practically a one franchise publisher now! I don't see anything in the pipeline that isn't CoD related.

@@sabotage9926 very true, although I'm sure FromSoftware didn't want Activision to have any sort of influence on development otherwise they wouldn't have agreed to a deal. But even then, Sekiro came out almost 2 and half a years ago already.

i agree and disagree. yes let the idiots waste their money but at the same time that send Activi$ion the message that that is what we all want and then call of repeat is just one big microtransaction. the SBMM algorithm is even involved to the point where if you buy a skin or a camo or whatever that i have not, it will put you in a game with me so that when you kill me i will see it and want to buy it. jokes on them though, the last "microtransaction" i made was back in cod 4 when they released the map packs.
Yeah we are not forced to buy..we choose to buy and complain..so i guess we want everything free n how are the companies suppose to make money
And as a result, there's going to be less chances taken on unproven franchises. But that doesn't justify their actions such as the recent mass layoff and overall lack of innovation. They seem unable or unwilling to fix their reputation. And it's kind of depressing.
Most of the infocom games were released on iOS and required you to pay extra for maps and hints. It was handled by Code Mystics. When the iPads and iPhones updated their software, the apps required an update as well. Code Mystics stated they would have been happy to do the update, but never got the OK from Activision who never even responded to the request. About $40 dropped on an app that is no longer usable.
I was wondering if you'd ever consider doing an episode on Kroger?
But don't you love lower than low prices?
What about the dark side of Nintendo?
when i was a 3rd grader skylanders were real big and the game was pay to win to some degree because they made your purchase each of the toy figurines so you can play the game correctly. that's why toys to life started fading away in popularity
Honestly I don’t see Activision or EA ever having to change, as long as there are people who will still buy their 19th call of duty or 40th Sims expansion.
Will a lawsuit from California concerning Activision Blizzard’s frat boy culture change your opinion?

They actually sued Paramount Pictures at one point over Star Trek. They had the license to make Star Trek games, and in the early 2000s, when the franchise was not so hot due to bad box office receipts for Star Trek Nemesis and bad ratings on Star Trek Enterprise, they claimed that Paramount neglected the franchise and thus hurt their sales of licensed video games.

Ive been watching this channel for like three years now. It’s crazy how fast time flies.
Honestly you missed way too much stuffs about them: layoff on the best performing year and getting bonus from it, destroying Blizzard from the inside (one of the most beloved companies), etc.
