  • NOTE ON HOW I USE BOOKS:
I filmed the books because I wanted to signal to you my research is grounded mainly in respected and published books. I hope they serve like citations in an essay. I left captions in the shot so you could pause and read them if you wish. Listed below are the books I used.
You can buy these books from my Amazon recs page: www.amazon.com...
Fashion: The Definitive History of Costume and Style
    ISBN: 978-0-7566-9835-5

Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear 1715-2015
By Sharon Sadako Takeda, Kaye Durland Spilker, and Clarissa M. Esguerra
    ISBN: 978-3-7913-5520-7
My Fashion History series is all about hitting the important highlights of 20th century fashion that every fashion professional should know to have a good working vocabulary of visual references. It's more of a general overview than a deep dive.
This installment covers the 1920s and we discuss the Jazz Age in a post-war US and Europe, how women's attitudes toward life in general affected the fashions they wore. I cover the New Woman aka Flapper look and the Robe de Style look, the 2 main silhouettes of this era.

When I check the description box it's completely blank, even when I click "Show more" is that just me? I want to devour the book featuring the Vionnet coats that featured patterns....honestly dying I can't do any further reading.

I remember that during the 1920's Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wore dropped waist dresses due to being inspired by the flapper look from Coco Chanel. Though in the 1970's Queen Elizabeth II wore trousers during a summer appearance in Canada as there was a massive insect problem. Of course; Princess Diana is considered a style icon of the 1980's and 1990's. In the 80s she was known for her shoulder pads but in the 90s Diana popularized the "revenge dress" at her first public appearance after separating from Prince Charles. I loved that dress because she was saying to Prince Charles "Up yours, jackass!"

2:24 thankyouthankyouthankyou I’ve just started watching your videos but I’m obsessed with vintage/historical fashion and it frustrates me so much when people are like “yeah the dresses in the 20s didn’t cover your knees” like bro... unless you were a dancer then they’d very much cover your knees

The timeline at the beginning with historical context is sooooo essential! I haven't seen many fashion videos touch on the 'why' all of these things were happening. Yours is very clear and understandable! I teach high school art and design and this video could be a great reference tool for units on Art Deco in the 20s. Thanks for sharing this!

It's important to note that KDKA radio in Pittsburgh did the first commercial broadcast in November, 1920. By the end of the decade, most homes had a radio, which brought the world of news and the music of the jazz age into living rooms. Such a big change in communication must have had an impact on fashion.

Loved this! As a fashion historian myself I always think it is imperative to know the history of the moment because it tells so much about why fashion was the way it was. Women working saw more masculine shapes, etc.

I'm an amateur writer of short stories but will spend hours trying to make sure slight details are correct. Since, it seems, the 1920's continue to be my settings, I began to realize little details and corresponding context were highly desirable. To me, this invites others to do the same thing I did, ask questions and look it up. Any topic, fashion or otherwise, leads to further inquiry and new discoveries. Your video greatly expanded my lack of knowledge. Great video!

Big fan of your videos!!! Just a note: During Prohibition there wasn’t a ban on the production of alcohol. You just needed a license to produce it with certain restrictions. You were allowed to drink alcohol; you just weren’t allowed to buy it to drink, unless you had a medical prescription or religious exemption-a little strange, but that’s the way it was. Also- if you had purchased say 10,000 bottles of wine or whiskey prior to January 16th of 1920 then all through the 1920s and up until 1933, you could drink it all without any worry of getting arrested. And if you read the Midnight Sleeper series, a thriller of the Jazz Age, you will virtually enter a time machine into the Roaring 20s-as there is a lot of fashion in the novels! The writer brings this era to life like nothing else!

Gotta say... LOVE the nod to menswear (an often overlooked topic) at the tail end. Also, thanks so much for taking such a researcher’s approach to a famous fashion decade that most people base off of Halloween costumes and get wrong. ‘‘Twas refreshing to see it done right for a change!
