Finally the time has arrived where I review one of the most critically
acclaimed stories to ever come out of Japan. A series troubled in its production, experienced in its telling and written by one of Japan's best mangakas Yoshihiro Togashi. I'm Totally Not Mark and it's time for me to analyse the adventures of Gon, Killua, Kurapika & Leorio as they continue their journey in The Yorknew City Arc. Welcome everyone to HUNTER x HUNTER!

Did Mark really wonder why the PROFESSIONAL SUPER HUMAN KILLER knew about his own poison xDD
yeah , didn't understand that part . The internet exist in that world and even better the hunter site. He could easily search for the effectiveness of the poison online or pay for info on it in the hunter website . Just like how we have videos in youtube informing us on how deadlly and effective the doses of some poisons are.
Ya, that seemed odd. I think Chrolo needs to see and know everything about an ability before he can steal it, right?
@@brettwallace7687 Ye
@@brettwallace7687 He doesn't need to know everything about the ability, I believe that restriction is he must ask any question about it and the owner of the ability has to answer it in order for him to steal it.

Mark has a very limited vocabulary
Is it weird that I was more surprised when he said "I didn't really like something"
9:48 Actually, the strengh of a poison is often shown in how much time it takes to kill a animal of a certain size, so it's not weird at all for Chrollo to know that, since pratically every poison in real life has this type of comparison related to them.
As much as I love the 2011 anime, I totally see the point being made about tone in certain scenes. Kurapika looks like something straight out of a horror movie in that scene where he’s carrying the eyes in 1999. I can see why the scarlet eyes elicit fear or unease in people who see them, something the 2011 version never really showed me.
Yes because 99 is much darker, 2011 never showed the time when during the plate hunting, Gon vomited from eating tree bark due to starvation, screamed in pain from when hisoka smashed his face and almost gave up the whole exam. He was SO depressed and it was so sad to watch lol 😂
@@ammszz5939 it's still censored compared to the chad manga

@@ammszz5939 No shit, it was filler. Making it appear darker than it was. Gon didn't scream nor did vomit from starvation and the only depression was ONE PANEL of him sitting under the tree.
tompatompsson I know that part was a filler but he did vomit from eating tree bark when he went to hide inside the tree. It’s happened in the first few minutes of this video: ruclips.net/video/wHW737IYbDQ/видео.html
Mark Praising Leorio’s acting in the Plan makes me happy. My man Leorio is Underrated

The York Ark on the 99 anime is PERFECT. The ambiance is just perfect
At which episode does the yorknew arc begin in the '99 anime?
I watched it in the 2011 anime first and it was my favourite arc but the mood and tone in the 99 version was superior.
i love 2011 as a whole but that statement is 100% true
@@theturkey4018 The 1999 TV anime adaptation covers the arc partially from episode 45 to 62, then the 2002 OVA covers the remainder of the arc from episode 63-70.
@@chubbyalonso3687 even the lead up to it was done better, I keep watching reaction videos to the show and I cringe whenever I see someone say that the tone shift in york new is jarring and could've been handled better by the author when it's a 2011 issue.
In 99, it's your run of the mill 90s aesthetic but you do have that eerie feeling that the show is darker than it seems, just like the manga, whereas 2011 makes everything way too light hearted and the color palette and music is bright and cheery even during darker moments which makes it seem like the show is geared primarily towards comedy, so when York shin hits, it feels like a different anime which is very jarring.
I love how he immediately picked up on the fact that the Zoldyck patriarchs are not callous killers but have a moral code. Assassins yes, but not mindless killers who revel in death. Shown here as well as very nicely with Zeno accidentally injures Komugi. This to me is very key in the characterization of Killua. In the underrated Zoldyck family arc, you already get a glimpse of this integrity when Silva tells Killua to never betray his friends. I think the reason why Killua ALREADY is not a emotionless killbot that requires "friendship speeches" (thank you Togashi for dispensing with friendship speeches in this manga/anime) to be a "real boy" from the moment he is introduced is because despite some of the other harsh treatments and trainings he received in his childhood, his father and grandfather either directly or by example clearly also instilled in him humanity and integrity. The Zoldyck butlers (also an awesome group) additionally help nurture him as a child. :)
I encourage everyone to think about their own Nen-Ability: ITS FUN, to say the least.
But the question is if you can cheat the System (to a reasonable extend) so i ask your thoughts on this:
What about a catalyst-ability whose sole purpose it to be Useless and even HIGHLY Restrictive and then multiple more Abilities that all have the teeny tiny Restriction 'Can only be used while the useless Ability is active'. I can think of countles ways how this will not work but a few where it would actually work: You just gotta have 3+ Ability-Slots and the Useles Ability should be Mono-Type but more importantly have Restrictions that 'act on you' as long as its activated or even outright all-the-time. Kurapika, i think, gave me the idea cause i wondered if Emperors Time extreme Cost only helps Emperor Time or them all - and f this is exploitabe! Heres the kicker: Dowsing-Chain is pure Conjuration but its directly stated to get a (Slight) Boost when Kurapika is in Emperor Time, so all you gotta ask is where this comes from. Cause its a slight improvement, it cant be all of Emperor Time's Life-Burning, so the only logical conclusion is some 'left-over' gets to Kurapikas other Hatsu. Guy's, its not rocket-science, all you gotta remember is he decreased his Efficiency to 80% and then up to 100% and all that's on you is remember ""Hey, wait, isnt that how he started as?"
So what i say is throwing Money into a Campfire can be of Benefit for more Abilities
than actually have the Activation-Requirement 'Burn Money'' IF you pull it off.
Hisoka's Blue balls is definitely one of my favorite moments in HunterXHunter.

I think the best part of the arc is Uvo's Requiem scenes. The fact that for the spiders, this wasn't about destroying the city or killing random people or even stealing the loot anymore. All of that was their intention, but the reason for the chaos was as a funeral for their friend. The fact that these people despite their acts of apparent evil really see one another as their family is beautiful.
Unfortunately;
and i mean that word in its literal Defintion;
the Zoldyck vs Chrolo Fight opens so many Plot Holes.
Hisoka never wanting to Fight the Zoldycks, but also the Power-Comparison we see in this fight,
it all makes no sense. If you explain one thing away, multiple other problems open up.
@@nenmaster5218 huh, what power levels? To me it makes complete sense
@@TheMemeXp1
Simple Problem i can easily explain:
Hisoka and Chrollo and Illumi are all shown to be on the very same Level,
not identical but very close to each other in Strength. The entire show can be cited for that.
So far so good, makes sense.
But when Zeno fights Chrollo and says it could have ended either way, that's weird. Especially if we try to combine this with the fact that Hisoka apparently never wanted to fight Zeno.
They cant have the same Power Level but at the same time its not that and also the Opposite of that but maybe not, who knows.
@@nenmaster5218 But Hisoka never meets with Zeno (Putting aside that Zeno is NOT one to kill anyone unless he has a contract), the one time he meets with Netero he challenges him but even Hisoka knows his limits and he is chasing one challenge at a time so you don't see him cling onto Netero, I don't think it's due to understanding how large the gap is, but simply due to understanding that to convince someone like Netero or someone like Zeno to fight him 'for real' could end up taking years much like what happened with Chrollo, Hisoka wants to fight the strongest of the strong but few accept risking their lives for no purpose.
Also it's quite hard to buy into any sort of equation of Illumi and Hisoka being on the same level as Chrollo and that's just because of how Chrollo is built, he is NOT some raw power house like Netero or Zeno, he is the man with the plan, his strength comes from planning, from having the right tools available at the right time, and when Chrollo and Hisoka fight - it shines brighter than ever but even here, Chrollo doesn't for a second believe he can win, sure he tries to still their abilities proving that he is absolutely a capable fighter but he already planned ahead and sent Illumi to do a job that upon succeeding will effectively remove the threat should he fail to accomplish the task on his own which he did.
And that's why when Chrollo asks Zeno who would have won between them in 1v1, Zeno does tell him that he would have won but only if Chrollo was in that fight still trying to steal his ability.
And knowing that Zeno understands a thing or two about his opponent and has seen his fair share, that's not Zeno saying 'you can take me out if you punch hard enough instead of being sneaky' it's Zeno saying 'If you just planned to kill me and used abilities that are specific for that task AND silva wasn't there - you could have won'
And it's really really not clear that this is what he is saying until you reflect on it not only after Zeno's appearance in the Chimera ants arc but after Hisoka Vs Chrollo where despite Hisoka not being as flashy with his punches as the likes of Silva and Zeno, Chrollo still chooses to avoid direct confrontation and chooses abilities that would let him win without a scratch against a very specific opponent.
And I do think that Zeno was 100% capable of figuring that out, figuring that what Chrollo chose to use in yorknew was designed to STALL or try and steal abilities rather than win, a moment of arrogance that Chrollo was not far from paying the price for.
You want to remember that Zeno and Silva were very cautious in this fight, one having never faced Chrollo (Zeno) and the other facing him many years prior where he was much weaker, knowing he steals abilities people as skilled as Zeno and Silva don't just all out attack they wait to understand the abilities first, meanwhile Chrollo no doubt knows exactly who is against and has done his research, he is ready with that dagger, he is ready with the cloth ability, he needs a single small hit which effectively forces Zeno and Silva to keep distance - Chrollo is showing a very well planned out defensive combat where his fallback is stalling and he needs it to be viable.
But having said that... Chrollo vs Zeno or even Chrollo vs Hisoka where Chrollo is not prepared with specific Nen abilities - is likely very one sided and that's part of the beauty of it - most characters but Chrollo above all others in hunterxhunter could win or lose against any other given a specific set of circumstances, only characters like Meruem and Netero breaking the mold featuring a power gap so large that it feels like nothing can be done.
And on that note - Chrollo is simply the best challenge to Hisoka as they are both on the top of the list with how flexible their ability is and while Chrollo is easily the greatest strategist in hxh, it's very likely that Hisoka is actually far and above the best tactician, making this way way more interesting for Hisoka than a 'can I beat the guy who punches really hard?'
@@blueplayer6197 I love how much Thought you put into this and I'd love to talk more aabout HxH with you BUT
you do base too much on baseless assumptions.
I have to admit watching these reviews has made me appreciate the original 1999 adaptation more. While I always appreciated its edgier tone compared to the 2011’s version, I still preferred the Madhouse adaptation like most fans. But after seeing all these comparisons between the two I have to agree that the 1999 version does definitely handle some scenes better. I bet a lot of people weren’t expecting Mark to praise the first series this much
It’s a little annoying since it shades the 2011 one in doing so, and makes it so that this series becomes less about the hype of 2011’s score and animation and more about literary analysis and subtext
Yeah it seems like any chance he gets to shit on the more popular 2011 version, which he admits is beloved by the majority of HxH fans, he'll take. With a few exceptions obviously, he's rightfully praised and criticized the 2011 version in certain instances. Like when he shows Kurapika with the eyes scene, I 100% agree the 99 version is superior in every way. Just comes off like he's trying to downplay 2011 simply because it's more popular. And he shits on the 2011 version FAR more than he ever praises it and I don't think that's really fair. So I'm curious to see if he'll continue this trend now that he has no more 99 version anime to compare it to. I may be wrong, but that's how he comes off to me. 🤷♂️
Unfortunately there will be no competition once we get to the chimera ant arc.

I'm somewhat disappointed.. Don't get me wrong the review is still decently good and all but I feel like Mark is unable to talk about the arc in its entirety. Yorknew isn't the longest arc but it's full of all kinds of stuff and complex characters, I get that. But I feel like he didn't cover even half of the arc somehow. He didn't really talk about nen. He only talks about characters on surface level and when you put everything together it feels like he only talked about individual parts rather than addressing what all the things form as a whole.
For example the fact that Chrollo was able to predict the future through riddles was a big part of the later part of Yorknew and yet Mark kinda just swept it under the rug by saying he didn't like the detailed explaination of what the predictions could mean for the individual characters. The fact that the complex situation could be seen from the perspective of all the characters not only drives in how the Phantom troupe operates but it also explained the *whole reason Hisoka faked his identity in the first place..* Yet pretty much none of it is covered.. I don't see how this review could make you enjoy the series even more since the review is so surface level and straight up ignores important parts of it.

Paku's death is such a powerful moment in any medium you experience it. Togashi goes out of his way to endear these characters to us, showing how much of a family they really are. When Uvogin dies, they all band together under Chrollo to find whoever did this. Then they capture Gon and Killua, and what does Nobu do immediately? He recognizes Gon as an enhancer, just like the late Uvo, and like anybody who is grieving, tries to use Gon to fill that void that has been left by Uvo's death. The Phantom Troupe is composed of ruthless murderers, but they aren't monsters. They're people. And Togashi is absolutely brutal in how he portrays that to the audience.
This just makes Paku's death all the more tragic once the story progresses to that point. The more we as an audience interact with the Spiders, the more we see just how human, just how flawed and relatable, they are. We see how like any family unit, they begin to break down once the "head of the family" is removed from the equation. Phinks doesn't want to play any of Kurapika's games, he immediately tries to use power and intimidation tactics, even at the risk of Chrollo's life, and the rest of the Troupe are horrified that he'd gamble like that. Paku instead takes over and enters full negotiation mode, knowing that the "Chain Bastard" is seemingly holding all of the cards. Meanwhile Chrollo is just absolutely nonplussed about the whole situation. He already knows that everything is going to go according to Kurapika's plan thanks to his fortune, so he doesn't let what's happening bother him. Then Paku sacrifices herself. She knows that she is going to die, but she also knows the rest of the Troupe will stop at nothing to get Chrollo back, one way or another. In doing so she guarantees her death is not in vain, but acts as a martyr to spur on the rest of the Troupe as a means of keeping the whole family from falling apart.
Togashi's entire presentation of these characters and this arc is, for the most part, absolutely beautifully done, with the occasional wall of text in a couple of places, but hey it wouldn't be HxH without that. It is his clear understanding of familial relationships, and perhaps tragedy more so, that makes this final half of the Yorknew arc shine so brilliantly, and has much of the fanbase claiming it as their favorite arc in the entire series thus far.

I cried.... This is what the older anime version deserve and you've done nothing short of a great service to it. All these scenes and music and of course, the superior opening of taiyou wa yoru mo kagayaku.
I know I said this last week but I seriously cannot get enough of you giving the 1999 adaptation the respect it deserves. It's an extremely well done adaptation and often out does 2011 in it's execution but gets ignored since that one is much more popular which is a shame.
That being said, 1999 does continue into the Greed Island arc and concludes right before Chimera Ants . Its direction isn't a good as it was for the arcs prior though unfortunately but it does exist. Otherwise I can't wait to see more of this series
Yeah, HxH 99 peaked with yorkshin, the Greed island OVAs aren't very good
Fr dho, In 1999, Kurapika was my favorite character with how nuanced he is and how much subtlety went into his development in York shin, so I always thought it was weird how people kept telling me he's bland and edgy and felt like a waste of air time in the arc, then I watched 2011 and got what they meant, he looks like he's constipated throughout the whole arc XD
I never watched the 1999 version but I always thought it would probably be better because it was hard for me to take the early arcs to seriously with how they portrayed the characters and scenes in the 2011 version and just seeing the darker tone of the 1999 version would automatically bring more weight in my opinion to the story that seems to me to be lacking in the 2011 version. Though to be fair I'm not sure if the 2011 version was actually trying to outdo the 1999 version to me looking back it seems more like they were trying to get through the content that the 1999 version had already done and then went more all in with the budget and effort into the chimera ant arc.
Though I could understand how people would like the art of the 2011 version better to me it seems like the older version has more soul.
@@andrews9695 2011 is more recent so the technology used in it is better, it's normal for some people to prefer it, but it's a fact that they rushed the early arcs.
It seems to be the normal thing nowadays, instead of making a new season, remake the old ones to be slightly above average compared to modern anime to foster the hype then all in on the new content, FMAB, HxH 2011 and even shaman king now are doing this
This is why I hope they never remake Yu Yu Hakusho, everything was adapted aside from the boring early arcs in the old one, so we're guaranteed a steep drop all throughout and a herd of people who'll never bother watching the original because the new one is more "modern"
@@animeworld5847 No they did not rush the early arcs. They follow the manga almost 1:1 it's just that 99 added. SO. MUCH. FILLER.

Another great review, I'm enjoying each single one of them so much :) And I'm very glad you addressed that incredible Kurapika's red eyes scene! (heck, he's frigging terrifying in the 99 adaption xD)
I just wanted to point out a particular moment in the Zoldyck vs Kuroro fight
(awesome as a whole, I love the animation and how the directing ties every cut in a seemless flow)
that is precisely, in this video, at 11:35. I don't know how the scene is in the manga, but in that moment, when Kuroro's been slightly distracted by Sylva's glow allowing Zeno to reach him... well, see, it's just my personal interpretation, but I love how for once you can clearly read on his usually calm and collected face the "SHIT I'M DEAD" thought xD
Oh another thing, I find interesting that, when he's caught, on the car with Kurapika, and has the upper hand on him... actually this happens because our blonde hasn't (understandably) a deeper insight of the situation and of the Spider itself. And actually not even Kuroro has, and his one ends up being a sort of unintentional bluff.
This for the simple reason that, as much as he's perfectly fine to die and be disposable as everyone else in the Troupe, some others ARE NOT, or aren't as much as he thinks, cool with their boss being sacrificed for the Spider's good. He thinks he is another leg, but a bunch of his people see him as the head. And to be honest I don't know if the Spider would actually survive as a organization without him...
But of course mr. Boss on that car doesn't know that detail, and mr. Scaryeyes neither.
So glad i stumbled on your channel 3 weeks ago, such good content bro keep it up
I'm not crying you're crying TwT , I can't describe the enjoyment I have when someone appreciates the 99 version that version was probably the first anime I watched for the story in my life, don't get me wrong I watched detective conan, dragon , saint sayia and yuyu hakusho all somewhat simultaneously with the 99 anime but for all the other I used to simply hop on at any episode and feel whatever but this was really my first good story anime and it delivered, it's seriously heart breaking to watch people hating on it for it's old art when I couldn't even stand the mellowing down of the 11 version , it lost something and not until 2 arcs later (from this point) the 11 series won't even compare imo

The Phantom Troupe is one of the best antagonistic groups of characters in all of shonen. I like Chrollo's philosphy that the group cannot function with ANY of it's legs severed.
@@peterpathos4313 Akatsuki is the copy
@@peterpathos4313 What ABOUT the Akatsuki?
All jokes aside, the main thing holding back the Akatsuki as a vilain group is how I can't explain to myself why the group even exists, I don't understand why half of it's members joined (I am aware of the game cutscenes), why they even stayed or better, why they haven't betrayed/sold each other, especially knowing that Orochimaru left unscathed.
They are badass characters, sure, but for the most part, I either don't see their motivations due to lack of characterization (a Kishimoto staple, to be fair) and for the ones who do have them, I don't see how the Akatsuki furthers that motivation.
I'll even go on to say that Bleach's Gotei 13 and the Fairy Tail guild are better organizations (not the individual members, the group) and I'll die on this hill.
The only other shonen I know that does groups as well as HxH is D.gray-man, it's fleshed characters, good dynamics and politics/balance of power that make the groups in it feel as real as the phantom troupe
@@peterpathos4313 Mind rephrasing your question? It's so vague that I don't see what you're asking
I don't fully understand the hype around them. I've only seen the 2011 anime and I wasn't given much reason to like them. They're a great team, but extremely boring characters imo. Does the 1999 version or manga expand upon on them more, or did I miss something altogether?
Why do people always say shonen etc ia there anything better in shoujo and seinen
Amazing videos can’t wait to see those chimera arc reviews
Great work! Always a pleasure to watch!
This never really crossed my mind before, but the Phantom Troupe's close relationship as a whole gives me the impression that this is what the Straw Hat crew would be like as coldblooded killers.
Correct me if in wrong, but they don't actually have a close relationship like the straw hats do. They always talk about killing each other and they don't actually care for any of the troupe's lives except for chrollo. If you want to be a troupe members you just kill an already existing one and they'll accept you
Had the same thought when i met them as well. They're a brilliantly grim look at what a bunch of superpowerful nakama can be, if they're not moral in any conventional way.
Especially if you compare The Spiders in Yorknew, with the Strawhats in Ennies lobby.
@@jamesk3612 I don't mean that they're close in a _friend_ sense, but close as a _group,_ hence why I said "relationship as a whole" (sorry if that came off as confusing). What I mean is that, more than anything, the group dynamic being threatened or shattered as a whole can really make some of the members emotional or scared, much like it is when the Straw Hats fight or get separated.
Examples being Uvogin's death affecting Nobunaga and Chrollo to the point of tears, Franklin breaking down how the worst possible scenario is if the in-fighting could destroy the group in an attempt to get everyone to cooperate, how Pakunoda literally sacrificed her life in hopes that the death of the Troupe members ends with her, and a few manga-exclusive moments later on. And while they do threaten each other, they only ever do so seriously when members feel as though another member's actions or intentions will harm the group, while for the most part, at least over half of them at the very least _care_ about each other, and they don't take the death of a "limb" just lying down or sadistically like the Akatsuki or Espada would.
And this is why Hisoka is the most hated and untrusted person in the group: intuitively, they know that he doesn't really feel like a member of the group, he never partakes in really _any_ of their small moments of comradery, and he's the biggest threat aside from Kurapika in leaving the Spider in a broken state beyond repair.
@@jamesk3612 Yes and no. They have a wholly amoral code, meant to preserve The Spider more then any particular part of the group.
But most members, save one, has been in the group from the start in Meteor City. And all those original members has a different interpretation of the code, which colours their view on Chrollo's orders. It's similiar to how not all Strawhats has the X mark from Alabasta, understands Nami's tatoo, or knows why Sanji only fights with kicks. But they still understand their friends dreams and goals, and fight to protect and further them.
@@jamesk3612 That isn't true at all. At most they bicker like family, but there are so many times they show they care about each other personally. Phinks and Feitan even say they didn't want to kill Gon and Killua because Paku liked them.
When I was a kid and saw 99's version of Paku's death I fucking cried I saw it again to see if it was just nostalgia or if it was actually that good just to cry again xD but now understanding why
Pakunoda is such a great character.
I’m not gonna lie. This is one my favorite videos you’ve put out simply because you expertly dissect what made the York New arc in HxH so memorable. And I love how you’ve beautifully edited in 1999s ost which just captures the drama of the character arcs. Thank you Mark!!👍🏽
This was a great video, Mark. I'm so happy you are at half a million subs already. I'm looking forward to whatever you have in store.
I'm loving the chance to re-experience the story and being introduced to the earlier version of the anime is honestly jaw dropping in the quality and I truly want to find it. While I am surprised you didn't mention Gon's outburst while being held captive with Killua as another showing of his twisted moral compass I understand it might have seemed like beating a dead horse since you did talk about it in previous episodes. Can't wait to continue!!
Yeah… Chimera Ant will be split into 3-4 parts for sure 😂

I think it's pretty normal to know the potency of one's poison. I'd Imagine reading about the knife you'd use in combat is something most combatants / assassins would do and it would definitely include a description of its poison. The fact it's a paralyzing type is an important piece of information too (not meant to kill, but allow Chrollo to steal another's powers and/or interrogate the person, etc.).
Also, Chrollo mentions it's a Benz knife (of which another Gon and Killua saw earlier at the flea market), and that it's not a stolen nen ability but a real, and infamous tool!

I really liked the kudos for the 99 version, it is so good but it doesn't receive much attention in general. There is a scene in this part that enforces everything you said about Gon so far. When he arm-wrestles Nobunaga he does not show animosity for the terrible people the spiders are known to be but gets really angry when Nobunaga cries the death of his friend in battle. Nobunaga understands the pain of losing someone but does not care about killing others' loved ones and that is what angers Gon. It really fits with your reading of the character. Great review.
Oh shit. I almost cried when that cover of “Ohayou” played. I haven’t even seen the 90’s anime adaptation aside from highlights, but I love that song so damn much. To ME it’s the soul of HxH. Much as I love 2011 HxH, the only thing I really didn’t dig was it’s music. The Op didn’t hit me, and there’s maybe 3 or a few more songs that I genuinely enjoy from it. Ohayou always felt like I missed out on something special. A beautiful tribute to an anime adaptation that seems really underrated.
True, The song gives a real nostalgic feeling and has the soul of HxH. I always have flashback watching the show as a kid when hearing the song. The Opening for 2011 is alright but it got annoying after 100+ episodes for me 😅
@@IzuLeMat it really did. Actually that was a big problem for me with a lot of the music in 2011’s. I don’t know if the 90’s one has the same problem, but a loaf of the music was repetitive, and having the same opening that I already wasn’t wowed by probably didn’t help.
