    About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday, we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

    I’m an Ag lawyer in California. If a client had a “clean and tidy” farm, it would be sus.
    In my opinion, a real working farm owner doesn’t have time to keep an immaculate property. Sure safe and relatively clean; but it ain’t supposed to be pretty 😂 Heck, they don’t even have time to keep up with the regulatory paperwork sometimes. Hope this guy keeps doing what works for him and his family. Forget everyone else.

    Morgan, you are so patient with these questions! So many of these questions are immature and you calmly answer them with humility and patience. You’re very respectful to other people’s opinions and beliefs. It would be nice if some of your viewers would do the same.

    Being honest is one thing, but not one single viewer is entitled to the details of your personal life. You share the things YOU want to share. The moment you start feeling obligated to random people on the internet and doing what they want, even people in your own community, you're no longer being honest, you're just following orders.
    Pay more attention to your fans, not your haters.

What would someone want to watch her for the entitlement does not come and go! Agree. Morgan seems to want to please all people, but there are some people who are impossible to constructively please. I believe I see a mission in the midst of this Gold Shaw Farm project, a small scale, humane, personal good-ecology farming project whose experience may help other farming be better. And if some are too kooky to see the mission because they see Morgan's human "foibles" (be they actual foibles or not) there's no need for Morgan to keep apologizing.

    The interview you did with the woman that thought that she should be all up in your business is disturbing. Why would anybody change what’s working for them for her, unbelievable.
    You have a great RUclips page that tells a great story it’s about geese and ducks and dogs and cats and cattle. And a guy that’s very kind with a wife that’s just watching him kindly. Your Finance’s is no body’s business. I don’t know why anybody thinks it is.

      I think she was lumping Morgan in with a lot of insincere homesteading vloggers. She was making some valid points as far as they were concerned but when it was pointed out to her that Morgan is honest and shows the failures and explains expenses as such, she just kept going back to her problems with them.
      She just needs to accept the fact that Morgan is not one of the problem people.

    • @erinnstreeter
      @erinnstreeter 9 месяцев назад +7

      What really got my attention was how frequently she 'othered' homesteaders that don't measure up to her expectations. "You're doing it wrong, and that reflects on my efforts" was a big part of her message. I saw shades of the VT farmers yelling at Morgan to "go back to where ya came from" in her speech when she tried to make claims that there are other people in the content creation space whom she perceives as representing farming "incorrectly." I will say it was gratifying to watch her step over her line of 'expertise' and into Morgan's with her comments about being fiscally responsible - she really brought a knife to a gun fight with that one. At the end of the video, I was glad Morgan posted it and gave us the opportunity to have our own reactions to that conversation, so that we could pair our takeaways with his recommendation to remember that life is in full color, not black and white, and we should respect people's experiences for what they are and seek to understand why individuals have the opinions they carry.

    Lots of respect to Morgan for answering these questions. And on the flip side, all those people who asked questions about his and Alison's personal life disappoint me, even for those he chose to answer. It's not very respectful nor considerate to ask that sort of stuff given that his presence on social media is focused on his farm and adjacent activities. Whether they are in an open marriage or how they came to decide not to have children is none of our damn business to inquire about IMHO.

      I agree in general, but keep in mind that Morgan does actually request people to ask the "uncomfortable questions" when he's gearing up to do these videos. Usually those requests go out on other platforms like Instagram. He chooses to do these videos fairly regularly. He gets that we all have questions we wonder about, and most people don't openly ask them normally. Its a very generous thing for him to do for his viewers, because as you implied, he certainly does not have to. He chooses which ones to answer and not.

    • @Aviertje
      @Aviertje 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@13MoonsOverMayhem That's a fair argument, but I think it still needs to be seen in the proper context: his farm & videos! Topics like dead animals, young animals that fail to be healthy, his feelings regarding the hunting lobby, his mistakes as a farm owner, whether he properly pays for Alfred's services, his run-ins with the maple syrup lobby and vermonts wildlife agency, his ability to start drama by being opinionated, the list goes on and on.

    I have the exact opposite problem. When I get stressed, I don't eat. I can go 3 or 4 days without eating a meal. That causes even more stress
    When my husband died, and I was 7 1/2 months pregnant with a 16 month old toddler, I was lucky to have a caring family who kept urging me to eat, and I had a very healthy baby who was born exactly on his due date.

    Thanks for this video. I very recently found your channel (via the tree videos! which I love, even if you recently said they were some of your lower performing ones) and it surprised me how much of a... relief? It was to hear you speaking openly and with welcome when it comes to things like community, neurodivergence, and support of the LGBTQ+ community.
    I'm trans, queer, and all kinds of neurospicy, and it's sometimes exhausting to wade through the far right rhetoric when I'm trying to absorb and learn about like... growing trees or installing solar or caring for chickens or whatever. And I'm sure there's plenty of folks who would rather "politics stay out of it" (aka, *me* stay out of it) but the truth is it doesn't "stay out of it". And it's a relief to see I'm not alone and not entirely unwelcome in the homesteading world, so thank you for that.

Your open barn windows need to have mesh screening installed outside and inside as a double layer of invasive protection. Nesting birds owls and, of course, protection from bad neighbors, Roman Candle projectiles. Get it done, Morgan. Before you wished you had as you watch your barn burn down

In some ways I feel validated by your experience.. remembering the challenges of gaining acceptance of the local community, developing my own farm practices to be economically viable and sustainable, and demonstrating in part some alternative ways of operation that older farmers may learn from and even choose to adopt - new perspectives can bring new life to every community. Hey Morgan, regarding hay: you don't need to buy modern tractor equipment to make hay. In my opinion, that's actually a losing proposition for most homesteader/farmsteader types, and I think a lot of people think that buying a tractor and tractor parts to make hay is the only way to do it.
    We've been making hay in other ways for thousands of years. Two hundred years ago, we weren't even baling hay. We were making haystacks. And there are some advantages to older methods, including the ability to stack hay in less than perfect conditions. When you bale hay with a tractor, it absolutely *has* to be the right moisture content because if it's too wet, you risk mold or spontaneous combustion (yes, wet hay is a higher risk for spontaneous combustion!)
    But when you put it in a haystack, you have the ability to pull the protective cover layer off the stack on a nice day to give the hay time to air out a bit.
    These days, for people who still make haystacks, I mostly see them use a scythe or a horse-drawn hayer to cut the hay. Then they collect the hay onto a tarp and drag the tarp-- or fork the hay on a wagon-- and lead it to where they plan to make the haystack. Most people who make hay this way cut about an acre a day. They'll cut the hay, let it dry a day or two (while going on to cut another two acres during the days that they're waiting), then go back and stack it. But again, they're the definition of a smallholder: I think the most I've ever seen someone do with this method is thirty acres, and it involved a team of four people. Two to scythe, two to stack.
    But I've also seen one person manage to do ten acres by themselves over the course of two weeks, and for their personal use case, that cut their winter feed bill in half.
    *I'm not suggesting you should do this.* I don't think it would be suitable for your personal use case, because I don't think it's worth the time investment for you, and I think Vermont's propensity for wet weather still makes haying particularly challenging no matter your method. So while I hope you find this post interesting, I certainly don't think it's applicable to you.
    But I hope other people reading this will stop and consider that if they want to make hay themselves on their own homesteads, they don't have to invest in enormously expensive modern tools to do it. If you have a relatively small field that only gives a couple acres of grass, but in a location where you can do multiple cuttings over the year, you can cut down on your feed bill quite a bit.

    I 100% support hunting. However, your land is your land. Never feel as though you have to apologize to other people for what you do or don't do on your land. Being liberal or conservative has nothing to do with it (I am conservative) Ironically, they are behaving liberal "Land belongs to the people!" and you are behaving conservative "I own this land and it belongs to me!". You have completely legitimate reasons to not want to allow hunting - and especially hunting dogs - on your farm. I guarantee you those hunters and their supporters would not welcome you and your animals to go tearing through their properties in the same manner that they expect you to allow them to go through yours. The real issue is 1. they want to hunt like they've always hunted with no changes and 2. they are lazy hunters. Dogs. GPS. This isn't the 1970s and they'll just have to accept that. PS: Get more cameras.
