About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I love it when you film the birds from ground level as they're bursting from their coops, eating, and interacting with one another. Yes, it's funny to watch (and always makes me smile seeing their undersides, legs and feet churning, as they run over the camera) but it's also interesting to see them at their own level, so to speak, rather than from above.

Just a note, squash and pumpkins (most melons really) have a bad habit of cross pollinating and making some odd half breeds. For animal feed it isn't a big deal but if you want to plant pumpkins again for other purposes I suggest doing a mono crop of pumpkins and not to mix in other squash type plants, or if you do make sure they are as far away as you can get. Pumpkins and zucchini in particular are voracious cross pollinators.

    • @nikkireigns

I’ve wondered about this - is it the next year/seeds you have to worry about or the current year’s crop?

    • @hightde13
      @hightde13 Год назад +1

@@nikkireigns in my experience it is the current year. When the plants flower they cross pollinated and we routinely got green pumpkins, and round zucchini mixed in with ones that looked correct. It does also change the flavor and consistency slighty. If I recall the more zucchini looking pumpkins were harder than the regular ones. As for the seeds I don't know, we've never re-planted from what was grown.

Do whatever you want Morgan, whatever type of video you want to release. You're never going to make everyone happy, so it's better to focus on your own happiness.

Is there a new barn tour video, I'd love to see it!

I love your DIY projects. With the farm so advanced now, and the new barn especially, we get to see less of it, but it's always cool to see your problem solving abilities take shape :)
14:00 I think that it's actually very simple. Have a video for geese only, that way people who find them too noisy will be able to easily avoid them.
    19:45 Hahaha :P

It's cool that you can pay if forward to the brewer that you get the grains from. Gotta love that circle of giving and taking. I hope you change your mind about getting a new set of piglets for next year. It looks amazing what they've done for the land so far.

Your videos are interesting because you show us all different animals to watch.

I vote that you share duck and geese videos as you like! I understand why some folks aren't a fan of the chaos but they can choose not to watch it. Just make sure to warn them with the title! Oh, and it's an El Niño year, so it's highly likely it actually will be a tough winter. Get ready!

Thank you for wearing the Milly Murder Mittens shirt. I know you really, really miss her, and I do, too. My rescue kitty, named Roxie, loves watching your videos. She is a house cat, but she loves being vicarious barn cat. She loves listening to (and watching) the ducks and geese. Roxie approved. Paw's up!

The garden in the hoop coop was a great idea.

The rigid kiddie pools are also excellent whelping enclosures for dogs. You can have 2 on hand, set one up for birthing, then bring in a clean one (and clean bedding of course) to use while the first set-up is cleaned up.

aww man i wanted to see the new door go up! Also i think you just inspired me to do a mini hoop coop this year! 20 degrees warmer solves my freezing concerns! AND it gives me the chance to be able to hang out with my birds outside! Thank you!!

You are really getting more efficient as you go. LOVE your wood storage system, if my barn wasn't metal, I'd adopt that idea in a heartbeat and get my lumber out of the garage. I have been homesteading about one year less than you and have learned a lot from your experiences.

Morgan! At 16:03 you speak of the woolly caterpillars being able to predict the weather. I have been raising Monarch butterflies for the past 6-years on the west coast. It is not so much that they can predict the weather, but more that they know what the weather is going to be. This might sound like a contradictory observation, but my Monarchs were delayed in their usual cycle by the exact amount of time that we had our unusual torrential rains. That was a delay of about 4 weeks. Put your hand on the pulse of the microbiome as expressed by the pollinators-indeed, all the invertebrates that you can observe-and you will have a more intimate knowledge of the world than the old school Farmer's Almanac could ever foretell.
