You are one smart dude! I’m too old to be working on these remotes, it makes me feel good to see how some people are smart and help others. College degrees don’t teach the simple things in life. Thanks.
"Usually" it's dirty contacts on the back of the buttons or the backside of the pcb where the button press touched the contact..and not a cracked solder joint..please try cleaning with alcohol prior to taking a soldering iron to your joints. If you aren't very skilled with a soldering iron , you will very likely heat it a split second too long and it will bleed to the next solder point, and then your device is history...and DEFINITELY don't remove any capacitors/resistors unless you bought a replacement and are highly skilled with an iron. Thanks for the video
It depends what the issue is "IF" it's the remote is completely dead like in video then yes that is most likely the cause... IF some of or most of the buttons don't work then it's probably the contacts like you said.....
Thanks for the video Adam. I have just bought a used Hi-Fi, which was working perfectly, but the remote was completely inoperative (one of the batteries had leaked and corroded the terminals) and I thought I'd have to buy a replacement on eBay. I cleaned up the battery terminals and wiped the circuit board with IPA, but this did not make the remote work. I then followed your advice about dabbing each of the solder terminals and it now works perfectly (although I held the soldering iron on the battery terminal joints a bit too long and they fell out, so I had to reattach them. Five minutes work with a soldering iron saved me £16 and the hassle of buying a new unit! Great tip about using a phone camera to test all the buttons by the way; although interestingly my work iPhone camera didn't register the LED, but my old Samsung phone camera did pick it up.
Great video . My remote is missing the big capacitor on the back from the factory (pcb has a place for it but not populated ). Why is this and should I add a capacitor there ?
Your video reminded me that a quick resolder of joints can help fix it . For my Problem it was the LED had a broken leg inside the holeit goes through. Thank you Adam.
Thanks for making this video, which helped me to fix my remote control for a brand new Lasko fan I bought with a remote that didn't work on arrival. In my case, pulling out the positive battery terminal springs a little bit, did the trick.
Thanks a billion Adam.. I tried to fix my old AC remote and it worked like a charm!!! The trick to see the IR light is absolutely fantastic. You saved $$$$$ :)
Thanks for putting that up. I was busy scrubbing the contacts on a remote and wanted to see if there was any solutions I didn't know about. I've noticed that every control I've opened up has oil around the defective button. Likely finger grease. Since I've had a dish DVR for years, I have a donor remote that in extreme cases, I cut out a button to use as a replacement. My surgical skills are not good enough to transplant the carbon button (yet).
I liked your video, was just wondering if you could help with an issue with my remote, I have a simple wall fan remote control and all of a sudden only the 'switch on' button stopped working, however the off switch button is working, I also tried to clean the switch board but the 'on' button still won't work work
What if you snapped the circuit board in half? Got a AC remote, can get for $50. At the moment using a phone app I had programmed prior to kneeling on controller
I had 2 remotes go dead after a move and I was able to fix one by doing just as you did and going over the joints with a soldering iron. That worked like a charm, even though I couldn't see anything wrong with the old joints. The other remote had a cracked board and I wasn't able to spend the time to solder on some short jumper wires to bridge the crack. Hopefully, I can get it back up and running in time.
Hi, my home theatre remote's IR is always ON hence, not working properly. If i press any button then that IR is stopping. Its more like acting in opposite manner. Inactive state i could see IR flashing but while pressing button its not flashing. Can you fix this?
Adam, is there a way to fix the battery housing ruined by battery acid? This has happened to me several times now. You'd think I would have learned by now. Thank you.
Particular problem with DirectTV remotes. The bottom black part has 2 layers. Hard plastic, PS or ABS, and soft layer, perhaps PVC with plastifier. This particular external layer makes the remote to stick to any surface and not sliding. And this is what creates the problems. Slowly it emits plastifier fumes that condense on the inside, on the PCB and buttons. Plastifier is insulator, and the conducting rubber does not touch the metal terminals. Take it apart, wash the plastic parts with soap and water, and the PCB with rubbing alcohol. Remove the yakky sticccky residue. How to take apart the remote. Remove the batteries. On the bottom there are two small black screws. Take them out. Flip the top. There is an oval insert at the middle. Remove it gently with a small sharp flat screwdriver. Start around the blue button. Under it you will find 4 more longer screws. Remove them. There are several snap-ons. Thats it. Wash, reassemble.
Thanks for the remote-saving video! It's amazing how many things you can fix be re-flowing solder. I should have thought about this the first time I opened the remote, but didn't. Can't fix that. :-/ I had said to my roommate that I wish I could test the IR LED, and along you came. Thanks again. Keep up the good work on such things, so we can. Cheers.
Thanks for this video, I was able to fix my Logitech Harmony 650 with this. It was the battery terminals - a little re-soldering and it worked like new!
Open the remote and use rubbing alcohol to gently clean the remote circuit. Then clean the other plastic parts that were attached to the remote. Then try if it works. If the remote is still repetitively blinking, then you will need to solder as done in the video. If it still doesn't work, the remote circuit might have internal damage.
If you don't have a plastic spudger or opening tool, do you have a guitar? A guitar pick is a great tool for opening press-fit plastic cases. If you have any kind of plastic credit card you don't need, you can sand it to a wedge and use that. Even a butter knife can ruin your casing, so just don't use metal.
hi from Singapore My remote TV remote control can only turn on and off. The other functions like Volume, 3D etc, doesn't work. Also the IR kept flashing after putting batteries in. Wonder what's the problem?
AdamDIY I've cleaned all with alchol and I've washed it with soupy water and still doesn't work, tried with aluminum foil and still doesn't work. What could be the other problems?
AdamDIY yes,it came with tv this one cdn.shopclues.com/images/detailed/176/samsung_remote.jpg volume buttons and the pre-ch button doesn't work, all others do.
And if all else fails and you just happen to have bit of gold leaf to hand, justy guild the contact face on the button. I used fake gold leaf and spraymount as an adhesive, worked a treat, but probably need to be gentle with the button.
Measuray Frank An LSR meter will give you a better reading on good/bad capacitors. But the thing I used in the video is called a TRANSISTOR TESTER DIODE RESISTOR CAPACITOR METER dc 9v That's the ebay title. It's just a cheap $10 thing from china.
Indeed a remote is so simple that usually its the bad joints to blame. If u cannot spot a crack or a disconnection by looking from the top, just flip the PCB and look at the joints sideways. Thats where u see a lifted joint or a disconnection
In case folks need a tool for opening a remote, there are numerous spudger tools on Amazon. I would get all three types, metal, plastic and carbon fiber. OEM remotes are so expensive that you're almost forced to get them over the cheapo universal remotes, if you can't fix the original. Also, if you plan to do soldering, get a grounded, low/medium heat iron and work quickly.
+Verna Harms Probably the rubber pad wore out under that button. Try cleaning it and if that doesnt work try glueing a little piece of aluminum foil to the pad.
hi from greece one more test that your led is working beside the i-phone it is ......THE RADIO just put radio in to a frequency and test the remote control ...then you ll hear a sound if it is working !!! if not... then it has problem!
Thanks ! My remote's capacitor had plucked out with the copper plating , which I resoldered by scraping the line and exposing the copper plating nearby in same series. Still that did not work. After watching your video, i heated all soldered joints with soldering iron and now my remote worked :-) Thanks again !
They make better ones now. Like this one amzn.to/2A7T13z But I recommend getting one like this if you can afford it. Like the one in the previous link, it tests more than just capacitors amzn.to/2OcwLZj

Excellent video. The corded remote for my father's mobility lift chair was about $100 to replace. Watching your video helped me fix it. Thank you.
XCLNT ! GOOD-THINKING !! (YOU-SEE HOW THESE COMPANIES RIP -PEOPLE-OFF ); UNBELIEVABLE ! BSTRDS!!! 👍😎😇

Not everyone has a soddering knife or test gears to test their things. So do u have a back solution for that?
Same
After trawling through a mountain of waste of time videos this one actually 'fixed' the remote, thanks.

How can I fix dilapidated black traces which the buttons press? It looks like the solder doesn't stick to them.
Thanks for making this video, which helped me to fix my remote control for a brand new Lasko fan I bought with a remote that didn't work on arrival. In my case, pulling out the positive battery terminal springs a little bit, did the trick.
Is it possible that led light is broken?
Thanks a billion Adam.. I tried to fix my old AC remote and it worked like a charm!!! The trick to see the IR light is absolutely fantastic. You saved $$$$$ :)
Hi ... what should i do if the remote stil flash light on but it doesn't work ...
What to do if the small pointy thing in the lower part is kinda black or burned
Can I cut tracers on a dish remote to make it function as a universal remote without programming to dish?
Thanks a ton Adam, considering I was getting power all across the board, I was skeptical at first, but it worked a charm!
Re-soldering 100% worked! Thanks!
Thanks for putting that up. I was busy scrubbing the contacts on a remote and wanted to see if there was any solutions I didn't know about. Hey can u tell how to fix it if the board is broken at the end part..
Plsssss...
what that material he putted on the remote?
Work for me used a solder on soldering points on my remote especially on led contacts and it start emitting IR - works (sherwood RNC - 100 )
some time, the damage material is cystal, the simple way to fix just cleaning the pcb, thanks
Does a remote always require a capacitor? I opened a new stereo remote that is not working and there is no capacitor.
What if the led transmitter fell off the remote control?

This is a very helpful and well made video.
I refreshed my solder jointsand it works again. Thank you 👍

Many thanks Adam, it worked. I can now enjoy using my dvd player.
Can you talk about how battery acid damages remotes? Is that fixable?
Thanks AdamDIY
Koh from Singapore .
Thank you much much.
After viewing your video I managed to make good my remote control .

Thanks for this video, I was able to fix my Logitech Harmony 650 with this. It was the battery terminals - a little re-soldering and it worked like new!
My tv won't receive the remote control signal, thinking it's the receiver in the tv that's at fault is their a fix for that?, thanks.
This worked for me. Thank you!
What temperature did you have your soldering iron set at?
650F I think.
My remote IR light is continuously blinking as soon as i place the batteries, without pressing any keys, not sure what can be the fix?
Open the remote and use rubbing alcohol to gently clean the remote circuit. Then clean the other plastic parts that were attached to the remote. Then try if it works. @@ridaassi8567 Tried everything, just ordered another remote 😂
@@AshishUK 😂 well I guess it just had internal damage in its circuit board.
Cold or cracked joints cuz of brittle low quality .. quality matters. I'm really old 59, but you really do know more than I forgot 👍👍👍
Dear adam
my IR led flases on all keys except power button 😒
Reassemble lg remote
TEAC remote control seems infrared light not working everything looks okay what's the solution.?well you got the tools for it I don't.
I tried this for my bpl remote. Now it's working fine 😊

hi from Singapore
My remote TV remote control can only turn on and off. The other functions like Volume, 3D etc, doesn't work. Also the IR kept flashing after putting batteries in. Wonder what's the problem?
You have to connect it with bluetooth to the tv
One of the buttons is getting pressed all the time
I cant believe it works. Thanks dude
Excellent video, thanks, this solved my dead Philips remote after I dropped it.
Bro please help me my Bluetooth speaker remote not working please reply me. I will give you full details
My remote circuit is snapped so what then
What if some of the buttons are not working, on my tv remote volume buttons doesn't work, and few other buttons...
Usually it is because the contacts are dirty. First thing to try is cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol. (rubbing alcohol)
AdamDIY I've cleaned all with alchol and I've washed it with soupy water and still doesn't work, tried with aluminum foil and still doesn't work. What could be the other problems?
TheLebronce Just to be sure, it's not some weird programmable remote is it? Can I assume that we are talking about a remote that came with the TV?
AdamDIY yes,it came with tv this one cdn.shopclues.com/images/detailed/176/samsung_remote.jpg
volume buttons and the pre-ch button doesn't work, all others do.
My remote simply lags to emit it light. I have tried re soldering but the problem persists. What can it be?
the remote led can go bad
Thankssss buddyyy!!! I got my remote fixed
Thanks adam. It works for my sony remote tv. Much appreciated 😊

Awesome man! Thank you very much. I dir a check on my control welding connections and I fixed it. I just saved some money.
my capacitor is ok but its track missing as its soldering area is destroy .how to make track my airtel dth remote
Use wire and dont worry about making a new track. just follow the destroyed track and solder a very small wire at both ends.
AdamDIY I enjoyed your video. Where did you get the capacitor/tester from and the name. Thanks!
