My late mother in East Keansburg, New Jersey watched this soap until the beautiful theme music was gone by Dec 1981. Afterwards, she didn't watch it again until we relocated to Deposit, New York 6 years later. This is my favorite Guiding Light theme before I was born (I won't be born until Dec 1982). I'm in tears over this theme thinking about my mom who died in 1998. She watched this as child back in the B&W era which ran for 15 minutes.
I absolutely LOVE this version of the GL closing theme! The Emmy was shining in all of its beautiful glory. And with the smooth melancholy music, I get tears in my eyes watching this.
I so concur. Usually, they would've flashed a little picture of the award in the left hand corner of the screen. But they went "full-frontal. It was a balls' move, and I am not mad at them. The "Greatest Soap Opera of all Time ", My Guiding Light.
That song brings back so many good memories of a great show. I truly miss Guilding Light. I wish more episodes from the late 70s early 80s where on RUclips.
This is the best music for a soap opera ever. Man I miss this classic show. Loved watching it as a kid into adulthood late 70’s early 80’s were the absolute best.
GL started at 3:00pm. School got out at 2:30 and the bus dropped us off at about 2:55. Mad dash to the house to try and catch all of Guiding Light. My dad hated that his son watched a soap opera.
I have a story to tell about this Guiding Light theme... Back when I was about 4 years old I would wait for Guiding Light to come on to hear the theme song... I can't remember if I actually watched the show but I do remember loving the music part. It would be quite a long time before I would hear it again. Not so long ago, I found it here on RUclips and listened to it for the first time after so many years. "Something unlocked deep inside of me" and I broke down in tears. I now have it on my favorites playlist and still love to listen to it from time to time 🙂
Yeah, it is pretty hypnotic. Especially when the award hits light. Other Emmy-winning soaps would've just flashed it in a corner for a minute or so. Not GL. A gorgeous display.
It would make sense that "Guiding Light" would want to take advantage of promoting the fact that it won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series because during this period it was airing directly against ABC's "General Hospital" which was an absolute ratings juggernaut at the time........
@@alvingilchrist7782 Both great shows everyone has their favorites... General Hospital also won Emmys for best show in 1981 and 1984... Guiding Light performed very well in ratings during early 1980s
Back in these days, I'd already had the audio output from the VCR running to our quality Pioneer sound system, and Guiding Light's ending theme never sounded better than with tweeters, mid-ranges and 15 inch woofers. There are instances where this end credit roll ran as long as 3:30. The attention to the show's incidental music was better then too, not only here but on "Young & the Restless" too.
I emphasize first off that I was born that year, and after listening to this theme, the disco one, and the one after the disco one, this theme was modern enough to last even until 1984 before they finally went back to a more modern, yet calmer theme after the disco fiasco (which could’ve been avoided if cooler heads prevailed).
They squeezed every last bit of mileage they could out of that damned Emmy that year, didn't they? Never missed a chance to announce the show as the "Emmy Award-winning Guiding Light" during the opening and during mid-show breaks, and then had it revolving on a Lazy Susan as the end credits rolled. LOL
any number of recordings I have, between 1981-83, don't have Alan Berns saying anything about the emmy during the midshows..and 'the award-winning...' went away some time in 1983.....
Well, they worked hard and earned that recognition. This was their very first win for Best Show. I was so proud of my favorite show and loved seeing their Emmy.
Maddy Kaplan (Edge of Night) was on The Guiding Light? And did I just hear Stay Tuned for “One Day at a Time”? Can somebody give me a QUICK answer PLEEASE?
Edwyn Sanchez I believe also “The Jefferson’s” “Alice” and “All In the Family” came on in the morning hours during the late 70’s and early 80’s but “One Day At A Time” had the 4:00 pm slot which was considered the worst time for a show. Edge of Night on ABC was actually the only show to stay in that slot for 9 years other networks opted for syndicated shows.
in the late 60s, from 10:00 am-12 noon, CBS had such shows as 'The Lucy Show', 'The Beverly Hillbillies', 'Andy Griffith and Dick Van Dyke, while the 4:00 time period had Gomer Pyle, then My Three Sons..shows like AintheF and M*A*S*H ran at either 3:00, 3:30 or 4:00 - until soaps took over the entire afternoon on all tree networks...
@@a.b.sproductionsllc CBS still had the 4:00 PM slot as late as 1986 when *Press Your Luck* was canceled. The station in my market that was CBS at the time and had just joined the network did not run it and showed *Good Times* reruns instead. The "stay tuned for" spiel was another casualty of the disco theme era.
@@Attmay “Good Times” wow that’s interesting. I don’t believe “Good Times” ever came on in the daytime hours like a few CBS shows did in the 70’s and 80’s.
They were. Because another soap would've just flashed their Emmy win in a corner of the screen on your TV. So let them have their moment. Shoot, going neck and neck with GH and winning top honors. That's big. Go on GL !!!👍
I remember the spinning Emmy closing! It seems a tad cheesy looking back, but I can understand their pride since they'd been on for 44 years and it was their first and well deserved. I guess I was hoping they would win more than just 2 after that one.
Fun fact...the Best Show Emmy was the only major Emmy "Guiding Light" was even nominated for that year, and it won. The amazing writing team, which included head writer Douglas Marland and the legendary Harding Lemay, wasn't even nominated.
Was Harding Lemay fired from Another World. I think he was Head Writer on AW and I see he is just listed as one of 3 under Douglas Marland. Never forgave Lemay for firing George Reinholt and Jacquie Courtney, Mary Dwyer etc on AW..
Harding Lemay left "AW" in 1979 after eight years as head writer on that show citing exhaustion. That was (and still is) a very long tenure for a daytime writer. Lemay was there during "AW"s peak years when the series was NBC's highest rated soap. Lemay made some questionable choices during his run as head writer (which includes letting go of Reinholt, Courtney and Dwyer) but on the whole he is widely considered the one who made the series the major success that it was........

So loved that the revolving Emmy was here with the awesome cast of Guiding Light!!
I can't explain why but this is just the best soap opera theme I can remember, it was very soothing.
Sounds like SPA music to relax you.
This was my favorite GUIDING LIGHT Cast!
One of my favorite GL themes.Love the mixture of mellow with a sad feel

My dad was the same way but I didn't care - GL was so good back then.
Your dad’s probably thought you were gay. But if you are, they always knew.
Mine too. Then when he became Ill he had quit work and stayed home with mom got hooked on search for tomorrow.

After being "Hospitalized", this was Guiding Light's chance to brush their shoulders off. Kudos to them. They deserved it.
I was 5 years old and I used to stand in front of my grandmother's tv when I saw this.

GREAT POINT! They were saying, GH might be the #1 rated show, but WE WON THE EMMY FOR BEST SHOW!

Yes, THAT Kevin Bacon.
" The" was dropped to just GL. Same with The Edge of Night
"The" was offically dropped (onscreen) in 1975, however the show was still referred to as "The Guiding Light" via voice narration until 1980.......
Beautiful theme music, but I thought it was very pretentious to roll credits over the rotating Emmy - for a full year to boot!
Oh wow...they really did that for an entire year? I figured it was only for a week or so.😝
Hey bragging rights!! 😁👍
