Actually it's the reverse - they would have to disassemble already assembled phones. The same happens with the Framework laptops - they need to assemble them first to test if they work like they should (and if they even are assemblable in the first place, defects happen) and then if you chose the disassembled version then they have to disassemble them. As a nerd I would kill to be able to do that but warranty liability would like to have a word with us.
Other than that, I would see this as an absolute win since production costs can be reduced by cutting out on assembly. However, this may counter-intuitively not always be the case.
Framework for example, will sell you a diy kit for their laptop where you have to assemble it yourself (or at least populate the barebones parts like storage, ram and networking) but as the somewhat recent factory tour by ltt showed, they still need to assemble, and then in some cases even DISassemble the device in the factory for qa and test purposes, meaning that it actually is more time and resource-intensive to have such a diy offering.

This would be an excellent business model. Buy a phone kit that you have to assemble yourself. It teaches you the inner workings of your phone. Then, if something is ever damaged, you can order that part from the company's website and replace it yourself. And the company could keep innovating new ways to make each part better, faster, etc. and offer an updated part that fits in the same spot that the old part used to, so you can just buy that upgrade instead of having to buy a whole new phone.

I actually love this concept of buying a phone pre disassembled. Wish it were a option! It'd make it so much more fun for people like me when your new phone arrives. Just unboxing it and having a pre assembled unit is exiting, yes, because new phone, but it can be boring, missing a personal factor. I myself love to dig around in the guts of phones, and to be able to actually order one and build it yourself would honestly be the cherry on top the unboxing experience is lacking for me.

Great video. It is very cool to see a phone that you can self-assemble.
However, the lack of water resistance will prevent me from purchasing it.
Additionally, I would consider the "Thickness" of the phone to include the cameras... since they substantially thicken both of the phones.

if I as a consumer could actually just order a phone "kit" and assemble it myself at a significant discount I would 110% do that. This also FULLY debunks the whole BS argument from manufacturers that "It's a folding device or It's too thin to be repairable and that's why we can't and won't supply customers with replacement parts." Honor obviously was able to beat the thickness of both of those phones and made their phone easily repairable without any soldering, everything I saw used either ribbon cables or those Low Profile flat "Lego" Plugs. Sure there's soldering in the components, but just like with buying replacement components for a Phone/Laptop/Steam Deck, if a Camera Chip fails, you buy a Camera Assembly and swap that Little PCB Assembly Out, doesn't require de-soldering a Camera and re-soldering a New Camera on to repair the device. Love it, I LOVE everything I've seen so far about it, so long as they sell replacement parts for it. I also wouldn't mind seeing a DIY Option where you buy the phone not assembled for cheaper and save money by assembling it yourself, in my opinion that would make people more comfortable with repairing a small device like this phone if they already had experience with it apart.

Knowing Zach he'll probably still do a durability test on a new phone, and I believe that, in the name of staying unbiased he should. Because no hard feelings towards Honor because the technology is impressive but this can't possibly be durable enough for the majority of people. But that doesn't give away the fact that this might be a small step, but for R2R this is a massive win. Internally this looks (maybe not physically) very solid and the factthat this little stunt just 5 years ago would be unthinkable.
Great move by Honor. Both in the advertisement department but also internally. Embrace the change and lead the movement! 👍
