  • I imaged the Comet Leonard together with globular cluster M3 in one frame.
    Equipment:
    -Skywatcher Newtonian Telescope 🔭 (750/150)
    -Canon Eos 700Da DSLR
    -Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro
    -APT, Deepskystacker, PHD2, Gimp
    -40s exposures
    -30min total integrated expose time.
    Leonard will make its closest approach to the Sun on 3 January 2022. It may reach naked eye visibility in December 2021. At an apparent magnitude of 4, it should be a good binocular comet. On 10 October the comet showed a short but dense dust tail. As of late November the comet has a total magnitude (coma+nucleus) of around 8.
    On the morning of 6 December 2021 the comet will be about 5 degrees from the star Arcturus. On 14 December 2021 the comet will be 14.7 degrees from the Sun and will quickly become better seen from the southern hemisphere. The forward scattering of light could cause the comet to brighten to as much as magnitude 1.

    Beautiful picture Chris! I find it very interesting that the tail is not parallel to the comet's orbit. You can see it sort of "drifting" in the video.

    • @catchingphotons
      @catchingphotons  2 года назад

      Thanks!! Yea the tail is bound to the solar winds (or magnetic fields) and thus is not bound to the orbits direction. Far away both co-align but much closer to the sun the difference gets apparent.
      Clear skies!!

      @@catchingphotons Thanks Chris. i hope soon i can get the automated setup to control the mount with ease from inside the house, had some delays, but hope soon i can get a working stable setup and we can make also the collaboration video. I have a small observatory in mind for the best solution but that might take a little more.

    Dear coffee drinker, your name was drawn in the prize game. You won the first prize - managing the James Web Telescope for the first 5 years. There is only one condition and that is that you first do a deep field view. Your NASA :)~

    • @catchingphotons
      @catchingphotons  2 года назад +1

      Lucky us the JWT is made for deep fields :-) I'm so excited to see the first result!!!

      @@catchingphotons We will wait 1 year for a deep field view. That's what a guy from NASA told me. First layer facing the mirror is reflective, it itches me a bit ~

    How did you stack them to make comet in one place, ist it possible to do this with Deep sky stacker too?

    • @catchingphotons
      @catchingphotons  2 года назад

      Yes it's possible. You need to add the comets location in every sub frame and set Deepskystacker to "comet mode". Just search for the manual. It's fairly simple.
      I chose the way of stacking both "just comet" and "just stars" and recombined in gimp.
      Clear skies!!
