I think it's all a bit tongue in cheek to be fair. They did one last week talking about overrated tech, and suggesting that it was the riding that was more important than the acquisition of the latest kit.
A lot of their content is race focused, because they are mostly ex-pro racers and they do a lot of coverage of Pro cycling events. I agree with Katie's assessment of the "bike vault" rules but it's something that has been around since before social media "influencing" was a thing. Old Boys and Ex Racers clubs probably pioneered bike presentation for photos, especially if there was anything for local media outlets (local newspapers often reported on local cycling races as filler content for the side columns) and a racer would have the mickey taken out of them if they did not pose with their bike positioned "properly". A lot of them still do it now amongst their social groups online but I am fairly confident it was a practice long before the GCN "Bike Vault" was a thing. Their sister channel GMBN does have the same section on one of their shows however it's done in a lot less formal way, and anything goes sometimes.
Bike vault rules have changed a lot though. It used to be them giving genuine opinions on a bike. For some reason they are now too scared to give personal opinions and have fallen back on a rigid rules based approach.
I'm proud riding my Decathlon road bicycle (the cheapest one with no disc breaks) and I'm happy. I started to ride at my 16 and I changed to mountain bike because I felt unsecure in Madrid. Too many cars. I left riding 20 years ago and now I'm starting again. I enjoy my road bike and yes, I'm proud riding again even with the worst bicycle I could have for those elistisms riders.
GCN has a regular segment rating bikes as nice or super nice. People submit photos and they rate them and is all in fun. In this segment, I think they were just having fun extending that to bikes belonging to "influencers." It really is tongue-in-cheek and nothing to take any offense from. And in fact, to be on a list with many other well know cyclists is an honor. And just be thankful they didn't call it a "bodge."
I think you misinterpreted their take. One, they are using their bike vault criteria which is meant to show off your bike in it's "best light" and even then it is done more as a bit of cheeky fun and not meant to be taken overly serious.
I saw that episode and KNEW that you'd take umbridge! LOL You did not disappoint! That section of the GCN Tech show is meant to be a little fun. They have some crazy "rules" to get your bike rated "Super Nice". Don't take it too seriously - it's not meant that way.... Love your channel. Absolutely adore you! ;)
Katie. I have been a huge supporter of GCN and the sister channels for many years now. Also, I have been following you since basically when you started this channel. Putting all this in perspective, when I saw their review of your bike, I just fluffed it off. They were using their "Bike Vault" criteria on a picture that they dug up and seems they were just having fun with a lot of those bikes.I was elated to see they mentioned you in amongst all those other great riders - as this would also drive more perspective viewers to your content. Don't let it cause any worries. Each channel has their place and content type. Keep up the excellent work you do and encourging us through your experiences. We all love you for sure.🥰❤❤
This. If you don't watch them, you don't really have any perspective on this segment. Its mostly intentionally over-the-top peanut gallery-ism. The criteria is well in the realm of inside information if you don't watch their shows. And they bash themselves for having harsh tastes. I think a lot of people get too emotionally attached to their purchase decisions and bikes are 100x worse on this front. It doesn't help that social media has infected all of us with validation seeking. My advice would be to just ignore it and move along. Its not meant to be a serious segment.
yeah, i was just thinking that... that it's the bike vault and the bike vault's criteria for a "super nice", so not exactly elitism or all that bad, right? but then i realised, the difference here is that with the bike vault, it's the fans who have submitted their own photos and bikes to be judged this way.... Katie (and the others in this specific video) did not... GCN just came on of their own accord and decided to critique these people's bike photos based on criteria they weren't even trying for, which clearly wasn't welcome in this case... especially with all the negative comments
@@khazza930 Yeah, its elitism mixed with ironic sarcasm. But you have to know the segment to really know that. It probably wasn't the best way to do it though yeah. Also, I think Ollie is in a bit of a place right now. He readily admits that there's a lot in cycling that is nonsense and over rated. At the same time, he's definitely in that full on phase of his time with cycling. He's an average guy who over the last few years has turned himself, later in life relative to pros, into a seriously athletic climber. That level of investment can come off as elitist when the guy is just at peak passion for it right now.
@@khazza930 Exactly! It was not fun nor funny.... it was kinda boring to see them "evaluate" their criteria on pictures that weren't taken for bike vault purposes.
@@cjohnson3836exactly. This is typical GCN content. There isn’t anything offensive in my option. It is only people who don’t watch GCN that would take what they say with anything other than tongue firmly planted in cheek. They are not elitist or exclusionary. They take the mick out of others and themselves. Personally I would be chuffed to be commented on!
They are applying the GCN “Bike Vault” rules. Has nothing to do with being a PRO. The bike vault is where everyday people post pictures of their bike. 1. The valves must be aligned either 12:00 or 6:00 2. Must be in Big chain ring and small 3. Pedals level 4. Picture taken directly 90degrees at the drive side. It is typically all in fun.
To be completely objective and fair, I understand the context that both sides are coming from. Katie - your rant against the elitism and opinionated people online is absolutely spot-on, I could not agree more. Riding is riding and it is all good as long as you are not injuring or hurting someone else. The opinion of anyone else about your riding means nothing, just ride for you and enjoy yourself. From the GCN side, the bike 'ratings' that they are doing are part of a bit that they do weekly on their Tech Show (the Bike Vault) where watchers submit their own bikes for review (all completely voluntary), the GCN commentators rate the bikes as either 'Nice' or 'Super Nice'. Their ratings are based on their own criteria and are completely subjective. There is a very large part that is 'tongue-in-cheek' and they honestly do not take themselves too seriously in that segment. It really is all for fun. What the GCN commentators did in this specific instance is just to pull pictures from people online (like yourself) who had not submitting their bikes for review. This was likely done in haste to throw something together for their show...as they stated at the start, they were travelling. My opinion is that this was done in poor taste, however, based on how the show is normally conducted and how the Bike Vault segment is run, I do not believe that there was any bad intention by the presenters in any way. It would not surprise me at all if at the beginning of their show next week they address this and your comments directly with an apology. I truly love and value you and your channel, you are absolutely the best!!! I do, however, value (most) of what GCN does. Now let's just go for a ride!!
😂 I love you! ❤ Earlier I watched a video you posted 9 years ago finding confidence to cycle your 13 mile commute to work. You're a lover of the ride/journey and a free spirit. Keep it real 💪❤
I love this side of you Miss Katie! I have goofy looking stems and and angles to stay comfortable on my bike. If I want to put platform pedals on my road bike, I'll do it. A lot to be said for just jumping on the bike, no special clothes, etc. Just ride for the joy of it. You have influenced my to use a chamois creme you mentioned in a previous post, it works very well and I have reordered. Yeah, they are full of themselves. Stay cool and keep riding, from a proud member of the gray hair peloton.
Yeah, they have "exacting criteria" for granting "really nice" status to a bike: No bottles in cages, no seat packs, drivetrain in "biggie-small" gear, and pedals level.
People submit their pictures of bikes following their criteria, I had never seen them doing that with pictures people did not submit for that segment... which is very weird and boring to tell you the truth.
Your spot on Katie. When I go out cycling I listen to what other people pay for their bikes £3000 > £4000 upwards and I start to think should I get a more expensive bike, I bought my bike back in 2019 its a Giant Defy Advanced 2, it cost me £1400, carbon fibre, Shimano 105, 11/34 set up and I was chuffed to bits when I got it. So now I’m happy to go out by myself and just toddle along at my pace, not holding anyone up, but then I’m 62 years old. Anyway my wife says your not getting a new bike, there’s nothing wrong with the one I have. I’ve entered a couple of Etapes here in Scotland and came in at position 3400 out of over 6000 riders on the Etape Loch Ness, also saw young guys walking up the steep parts of the course with their more expensive bikes and I just kept cycling past them. Happy cycling and take care.
I enjoy watching some of the GCN videos, but I suffer from the fact that they all ride very expensive bikes which are probably given to them by the manufacturers, unfortunately in the real world not all of us are in that position. I like your videos because you inspire people to ride no matter what they are riding, so keep doing what your doing.
I love GCN and their sometimes tongue-in-cheek approach, but I also love your "keeping it real" inspirational content. And you have certainly earned the QOM on "GCN critique" with that rant :)
True, GCN's pseudo-standards on bikes is to much based on pro racing and not real people riding bikes. Sometimes they dig up a pro racers training bike and they are flabbergasted by the massive saddle bay, pump on a bottle cage mount, state of maintenance, ... the list goes on. Also have to agree on the Katie's rand. That was on point 😂
@@manueldeubler1127 ranting about a tongue in cheek video is not a great look. No one should take themselves so seriously that they can't tolerate a little friendly shade thrown their way.
@@stevenmeyer9674 It doesn't actually come across as tongue in cheek though. They are being critical of candid shots of people actually out riding bikes.
@@DaveCM The video was indeed done in fun. Sometimes, being able to laugh at your self come across much more positively than taking yourself too seriously. If you watch GCN tag all, you would know they don't take themselves or their co-hosts seriously. Ask Ollie, I'm sure he would agree.
Please never change Katie. GCN does put out some good content occasionally but yours is the best cycling related channel on youtube. Never dull, never boring, always entertaining and educational. Plus you are a genuine and honest person. Love watching your videos and even though I've been cycling for over 40 years there is always something to learn. Thank you for being you.
Absolutely love your channel and it’s been inspirational to my cycling. Thank You. I watched the GCN video and laughed when I saw their section on you. I totally agree that it doesn’t matter how your bike looks etc but in reality isn’t the GCN video just a bit of fun - tongue in cheek. I don’t think they’re mocking you- I didn’t take it that way and I’m sorry they annoyed you. Keep going keep inspiring us all thanks x
Love your reaction Katie... don't hold back (lol) - yes agree very easy to get caught in the rabbit hole of what other people think you should or shouldn't do rather than just doing you and enjoying how you want to ride.
Greetings from Seattle Washington. I just discovered your videos about a week ago. I decided last year to get back in the saddle again. Your video history has been as inspiring to me as the movie "Breaking Away" was when I first started riding in the 70's! Sooo, just like in that movie, you have encountered the demigod-like riders who have nothing but contempt for those who don't measure up to their standards. Please don't fret too much about it. You're real, relatable to me. At times you're just what I need to "get on the bike!" Thanks for being you.
oh dear - confected outrage does get lots of people going right. It's totally tongue in cheek from a crew that are adding an awful lot to cycling pleasure around the world. (But then I did get a supernice one week 🙂) Love what you do too KK.
When I first got into cycling GCN was a super helpful, entertaining and educational resource. Dan, Matt and Ollie were my online mentors. However, while I subscribe to GCN+ for their racing coverage I have not watched any of their RUclips content for years. There is much more entertaining content on RUclips these days. I’m sure it’s all tongue in cheek, but it’s a shame to see they haven’t out grown this type of dumbed-down, low hanging fruit content. Keep doing what you’re doing, Katie ❤
I’m with you Katie . I like GCN but the roadie criticism of people’s bikes is ridiculous. It shouldn’t be a fashion show. I remember I used to frequent a certain bike shop . It was and is owned by a great guy . Unfortunately for certain time he employed his brother who was a roadie snob . Every time I’d go there and the brother would always question me and have a condescending attitude. I had a used steel frame former race bike that I purchased from another shop that had a race team. It was somewhat outdated and I wanted to upgrade the drivetrain and wheelset. It was a nice bike and I liked it . I didn’t need the latest carbon high end race bike . I was way past the age of being a racer . I enjoyed riding country roads and the challenge of doing good climbs . Thankfully the brother left for wall street and the owner has continued to build his business. I no longer live in that area but because of that owner I miss that shop and the rest of his staff .
Its called " tongue in cheek" if your a regular viewer of GCN you'll know that its done in jest, I really like your videos Katie, but, a bit of a sense of humour failure here, lighten up 😉❤️
Gosh, you so beat me to it. Exactly what I was going to say. Defo tongue in cheek. On the plus side, I had never heard of this Katie person before this GCN video and I've now watched a couple of her videos!
It's not just cycling Katie, it's within everything these days but in Cycling it's Rife....it's all about money and trying to sell Nonsense....I mean take Gravel Bikes for instance, there just road bikes with thicker tyres but all of a sudden they've reinvented the Wheel "BULLSHIT", Bicycle Touring has now become Bike Packing because it's more Trendy and Cooler to say "Bike Packing", but as I said it's a Sales Ploy..."Don't believe the Hype and just ride your Bike" ....you see so many cyclists these days with all the gear but no idea.... NONSENSE ALL OF IT
@@carlrichards9333I like the bike packing trend. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to use my touring bike in the same areas but I can’t get to the same places as fast or with as little care. Gravel bikes are a bit weird. I think you are right about the swapping tires because that’s what I do with all my bikes depending on the road or I don’t and ride anyways. But they are kinda the in between of most bikes for most situations.
I agree with you on this, but surely the whole point of the GCN show is that it's just a bit of fun which appeals to a certain viewer - a different kind of viewer to those who watch your channel. It isn't meant to be taken that seriously! But it's great that you promote a different kind of approach
Good video. I like GCN and am sure they are just doing it in fun, but you're right that this stuff is taken far too seriously by too many people and it can be intimidating. I find it more so in road cycling than mountain biking, although it's there in both. The right bike is the one that gets you out there having fun, and the right kit is the stuff that enables that. The rest is unimportant.
I think it was done in humour 😂😂 its all made me laugh, agreed none of what they said matters in regards to you, all the best katie keep up the good work. Clint
No need to rant Katie, rules are biggy smalls, valves either at TDC or BDC, and cranks horizontal, just a bit of fun and they're a great bunch with a tongue in cheek bit of the show.
They're examining the photos as they do with their Bike Vault segments on their regular show; they judge the bike's aesthetics and have certain criteria for "the perfect photo". I get what you mean and agree with you, but there are some of us cyclists who do also care about and appreciate the aesthetics and little luxuries. It's all in the name of good fun and entertainment - if you don't care about it, you don't have to participate. As a public figure though, people can take you as an example for critique. It doesn't really matter - I love watching everyone's content and don't take everything seriously.
Bravo! I watched the GCN video last night and thought the very same things you bring up in the video. But, I do think they were intentionally trying to get the response from everyone like you've provided. I did notice that they didn't go after durianrider, Harley Johnstone. I figured he'd be in their crosshairs. 😂 Let it go Katie, we know your position and the reality of your content. That's one of the reasons I follow your channel.
haha, while I am not a fan of his, that guy does bite back with good arguments. They did not dare mock his use to canti brakes for his road riding bc he would make some valid points and GCN want us to get the latest disc road bike. (DR He uses Disc for gravel). They now know Katie is not to be messed with.
I'm glad to see this , all you tubers seem to be suffering for mid level bike content so i've stopped clicking on their videos . many of them have stopped making videos or have slowed down a-lot . We are still buying 2022 bikes , there are new 2024 things released in pictures but I don't see them in retail stores yet . There's a bottleneck and a lull in the market and not just these guys but many others seem to be promoting their own personal taste to us instead of what interests the masses , probably because there's nothing new in what interests the masses . Many say no saddle is designed to be nose up , .. but when I look at a wtb saddle it has a hammock in it , I'm 58 and started riding my first drop bar bike last year , .. It's taught me core strength that I wasn't aware of on a flat bar bike , the nose of my saddle in the correct position for me prevents me from sliding forward and allows me to use my core to keep 70% of my weight off of my hands . My fitness and lung capacity has noticibly increased in 2 seasons . The tail of my saddle too high puts the weight forward .
The GCN boys remind me of the guys on Top Gear which is a programme I detested but I’m probably in the minority. I’m glad to hear you ranting at this ridiculous content, I hate snobbery in any sport and this is exactly what I dislike, it makes people feel inferior and less than. I’ll take any bottles from my shelf and ride in the gears that suit me fine….thank you for ranting!! You’ve been a massive inspiration for me…. Please keep going 🚴♀️🚴♀️
I am with you the elitist BS often spouted. I am not the fittest cyclist out there not by a long stretch and until recently struggled with being overweight and trying to stay with the "trendy elitist" with my compact 50/34 because that's the "norm" and to do anything else would be frowned upon. Until following you! GCN or GCN Tech did not influence me sorry. encouraged me to go for a 46/30 chainset...you did! And I am frickin' glad. Best decision I have ever made. I can climb better and up climbs I would certainly have avoided before. So thank you Katie, thank you for telling it like it is and thank you for being a RUclipsr...Nige 😊👍🚴♂
I watch you all the time and I watch GCN a lot. They are taking the piss. It's a silly segment and it's fun. I don't feel it's elitist. Mis-matching bottles! Seriously? It's just silly. I didn't feel the rant was really worthy of how cool you are. You haven't signed up as an "influencer" but you've made a huge difference to me and my cycling. You're amazing and I'm grateful.
I wouldnt take the GCN 'bike vault' thing too seriously. It is a bit of lighthearted fun. They are only 'rating' bikes 'nice' or 'super nice' and they dont just give the most expensive bikes all the 'super nice's'. I think it started out as a 'rate my bike' type of thing just on the channel then they opened it up to the much wider public with the app. I guess faced with so many photo's of people's fantastic bikes they had to find a way to differentiate them. One of the presenters, I think it was Olly, in this clip, came up with his own set of criteria against which he thought the photos should be 'scored' which has kind of stuck over the years. Its just a bit of light-hearted entertainment and makes what would otherwise be a fairly boring look at some photos of people's bikes into something amusing. Just think of it as a free 'plug' for your channel and nothing else!
You are an inspiration Katie, My current bike was built by me and is built for me to enjoy cycling and not to impress ours. I have to think your bikes are fantastic.
Yep agree with everyone, lighthearted tongue in cheek. Bike vault is nice or super nice. Various criteria- drive side, biggy smalls gears, no chimney (steerer tube), tyres & valves aligned, cranks level, no accessories, matching bottles etc etc etc Just a bit of fun
Well done Katie for serving it up to the GCN Sponsor Sycophants! 100% support you on this and your content over the years has been spot on that your Instagram is merely a byproduct of the RUclips stuff. GCN make content nowadays seemingly aimed at the rich dentist, banker and barrister cyclists where money is no object to appease the sponsors. A lot of it is out of touch with quite a lot of leisure riders I know and I’m aware Harvey on Durianrider has called them out many times on this - you are both spot on. I’ve had the same comments over my bike when riding at a local cycling club, it’s narcissism at its best. Cycling should be accessible to all regardless of ability or budget and how you set your bike up to get the best out of it shouldn’t really matter to anyone else.
If you think Durianrider is worth quoting, you clearly have no judgement whatsoever. The guy is a complete weapon. Cycling is open and accessible - a comedy segment on RUclips makes no difference to anything.
@@IverKnackerov people’s attitude to comedy is different and one can still take offence even if to some this is perceived as unintentional. If you reread the comment you will see I’ve not quoted Durianrider on anything, however I fundamentally agree with his opinion that GCN are pedalling the latest tech whilst parading their expensive bikes given to them to appease the sponsors in a move away from their older content which was seemingly all about encouraging and educating new and experienced riders. So sorry Ken, I think my judgement as an experienced is perfectly placed to comment whatever I choose and not for you or anyone else to tell me otherwise.
@@IverKnackerov furthermore if you’ve actually watched any Katie’s content going back many years, Durianrider was actually key in changing her life for the better so go figure! 🤨
Ouch! I love both your channel and GCN. I hope Alex and Ollie see this criticism of their criticism and take it to heart. I agree that you are not an "INFLUENCER" but you are an influencer, but not of bicycle style or looks, but of bicycling, the activity. I've been laid up by injuries so I haven't been cycling since May, but I'm going to as soon as my arthritic knee is resolved. Of course, it doesn't help that I just broke my big toe!
I agree with you 1000% While we all might lust after the super bike, latest tech, and the nice shiny bits. The reality is that the best bike is the one you’re riding at the moment. I learned that lesson the hard way after having 5 bikes stolen from my apartment in 3 break ins over 4 years. Not all of us are doctors and lawyers who can afford those things. However I’ve been fortunate enough to have a great friend who works in the industry that has helped me get on bikes above my pay grade. And even with his help I don’t need the top end stuff! That said keep making all the great “”RUclips” content!!!
It’s the bike vault they do it in the tech show people send pics in and they review it. Wouldn’t get too annoyed at it lol your bike is perfect for you and not them or anyone else. But to get a super like they want a clean picture bottles out etc and in big front and small rear gears it’s a bit of a giggle it’s not important. All that’s important is you ride and you enjoy :)
Love this video! Never seen you so angry! But 100% agree with your sentiment. GCN make some great videos, and I get it’s tongue in cheek, but your points are still so valid.
Who else thinks that Katie's next adventure should be a visit to GCN headquarters, with her Windspace AND mis-matched water bottles. She could then set the QOM on their piddling little local climb and show them what a normal, Northern cycling lass is all about. You know, just for a bit of fun.
Hi, this doesn’t do GCN any favours / favours though. Makes these 2 presenters look kids in a playground and provide no value to the audience that normally look to them for guidance. +1 for you Katie and -1 for GCN. I expect better from GCN.
@@robaust3049 you can tell with what things they are actually picking holes in though that it is not serious and a bit of fun, Katie even admits it at the end. I’ve watched many of their bike vault sections on the GCN channel, and that’s how it’s aimed at the audience, a bit of fun. It’s not meant to be taken any other way.
Love it, never change Katie i love the honesty i guess im in trouble for having mismatched bottles 😂. You don't influence me but you inspire me to take my bike abroad on a holiday. Reminds me of when i was at school kickers shoes were all the rage and you had to have them.
Two things - 1; GCN is basically Top Gear for bikes 2; Completely agree about elitism in cycling. How dare they criticise your saddle angle set up by Head physio at British Cycling and Team Sky, Phil Burt
I couldn’t help having a smile as I listened to you getting worked up about the GCN review, good job you could blank out some of your frustration expletives🙂. I reckon yer too genuine to be an ‘influencer’ by intention. Keep the videos coming, they are encouraging and entertaining all at the same time🙂
Sometimes, mismatched bottles even have a specific purpose. I have a 1L bottle with water that's insulated and a 750mL one that is not insulated and has carb solution. They're mismatched so I don't get them confused.
These guys are great. The bike pic critique is not about cost or value or hoity toity stuff. its about taking just a few seconds to put your bike in the best possible position for a great picture. Level cranks, valve stems facing the same way, have your gears and components facing the photo. I love a hot bike pick and i cant stand to look at a beautiful bike with a lazy photographer. Follow their suggestions and even your Huffy sledgehammer bike will look good!
Katie, as other have pointed out, Ollie and Alex from GCN were just having fun. 😉If you watch their weekly show you'll see it's all tongue and cheek. As an aside, they also regularly speak out against elitism in cycling.
You are one of the realist RUclipsr out. Someone people can relate to and learn from because you put your experience out there! Keep being amazing! You and Francis are my favorite’s although there podcasts are way to long lol
Hi Katie!! Love your channel but..... Keep your knickers on, lol 😂🤣 the bike vault on GCN is always done 'tongue in cheek' - it's NOT meant to be taken seriously - they are winding you up!!! 🥰
Back in the 80s I rode club rides with a fellow had a De Rosa fit for the TDF, with a basket and bulb horn on the bars. To watch people jolted by the discovery was priceless. Tipped em over. Peed me laughing. His smile for an older gent was…priceless.
I was a big fan of GCN but never judge a book by its cover I love my Trek with all the accessories from Amazon, I am 54 and have been riding for three years, and the you tubers like yourself and Leonard lee have encouraged me to complete my first 100 km this weekend, thank you , cycling is getting out there and enjoying yourself and living live to its fullest... Thank you from all your followers
You're taking it far too seriously, if you went back over GCN Tech past you'd see they aren't being that judgemental. I don't think anyone would suggest GCN hasn't done great things to encourage cycling. Go for a ride and breathe!
I guess you never watch "The GCN Show" and their Bike Vault segment... it's part of their "rules" for submitting bike photos in terms of composition of the shot, their preferred gears (biggy smalls), the right angle of shot, no extraneous gubbins, etc. It's a funny thing they always do and they carried it over into this rating video. So I guess you missed the jokes. You took it too seriously and totally missed the point. I had to actually stop the video and couldn't watch anymore at the start of your rant at 3:58 because you were getting totally angry at something you had no idea was part of their jokey content in the first place. This is the definition of "Whoosh" over your head content. It's like you watched Les Miserables and got pissed and started ranting that they started Singing.
Totally agree with you Katie , cyclings about adventure and just being on the bike ..... Not , I have the best of this or best of that , trying to fit in with the 'jones' . Thanks for sticking to the really reasons of cycling and for sticking to the normal cyclists .... We can't all afford alot of the bikes that gcn have on their show . Thanks for a great channel
I am not Katie's biggest fan usually (a GCN fan though) but this time, my love goes to you Katie! Not wanting to be an influencer is a great gift - keep it😘
GCN is raking in the cash by convincing people they need the most expensive bikes. Just look at their biased cheap vs expensive bike compares. Rarely compare a second hand bike, just a super cheap new bike to an ultra bike. Katie always struck me as down to earth and honest with what she recommends. I applaud her for calling out GCN, who hide behind their "jokes" which have elitist undertones which no doubt pleases their sponsors and gets us to spend more than we really need to. It's all about getting out and riding and having a good time.
Seriously, Katie, you are abrogating your responsibilities! The GCN folks are absolutely right: having mismatched bottles on a bicycle is the thin end of the dystopian wedge, and where anarchy will inevitably leads to "nasty, brutish and short" lives for cyclists and non-cyclists alike. Please lift your game, or we will be condemned to a future with only mechanical shifters and no Lycra!
Hi Katie. I came up with a new nickname for you: Katie “The Bomber” Kookaburra. Never heard you drop so many F*-Bombs in that short span of time. Love it 👍👍👍. We listen you on YT because you’re are fun and your smile makes our days better. Keep up the fantastic work you’re doing. A fan from from Montreal 🇨🇦.
Hay Katie. That was great video. You just keep being you. I don't ride near as much as i used to but, I love watching you in the neat places you ride. Some of you tips have helped me along the way with the bad weather you have in the UK it is very much like the weather we have here in New England in the Northeast of the US. Keep up doing it the way you do.
When I first started cycling, in order to carry on when it was cold and wet I used to wear a massive baggy pair of snowboarding trousers. reigned in with 3 bungee cords down each shin. I really hope it caused some bike snobs pain.
I'm with you 100%. I travel with a touring bike fully loaded with racks and fenders. The GCN skit is not uncommon in real life when I cross paths at times with other riders. The simple act of riding a bicycle has been bastardized by a weird "elite" segment.
❤ the rant 😀😀. I agree - rating photos submitted by owners to “the bike vault” where they have a well advertised set of criteria (like “biggie smalls” etc) is one thing, but judging other people’s photos posted on their own channels to represent adventures or stories by the same criteria doesn’t make sense! PS. I loved your bike - looked a real bike on a real adventure to me ❤
This is hilarious! The history of GCN Tech’s Bike Vault is so tongue in cheek about the Velominati rules when taking a bike photo and you’re riding to it - unless - unless you’re ranting for our reaction too! 😂 Aww bless! BTW I ride a Winspace G2, Lún Grapids, did thick end of 500kms with 7300m vert over the weekend on it.
In reality all you tubers are influencers as folk see what bike/gear they ride and some will be drawn to it. All sport is tied into having what the pro’s wear or use in their sport. Having said that GCN are elitist as they are coming from a “roadie” background. I love your channel and your honesty, keep up the good work lass.
Most "roadies" I see are all kinds of people. Some on 80s road bikes. Some on cheap road bikes. All having a good time just getting out. Respect to all of them. They all wave or smile back or initiate a wave.
I completely agree Katie. I gave up on them after I believe Ollie said he wouldn't ride if he had to ride on Shimano Sora. Like this is the kind of crap that puts people off with the classism of the sport coming through formats like this. Normal people can't afford Dura ace, doesn't mean there bikes are shite. I feel like people are saying that this is tongue and cheek and to some extent I see that, but the values they are perpetuating through this are still just so negative and classist I hate it. #soraforlife
This video is 100% - people should appreciate that you are actually out there riding any bike you like or have somewhere in the real world, setup for how you actually ride your ride, and being yourself. It’s supposed to be fun, not a fashion show. Any bike “could be better” if you spent more time splashing the cash on marginal gain upgrades or stuff that only looks better, but I’d prefer anyone to actually be better by riding their ride, getting out there, seeing the sights, and putting in work. Isn’t that the point?
I agree with many of the other comments, Katie totally missed the point and the rant is a little unnecessary. As a cycling RUclipsr I think she knows exactly what GCN’s bike vault feature is all about and she admitted as much in the last part of the video. This particular bike vault was a little tongue in cheek as I think we all knew. Also, Katie doesn’t want to be an “influencer”?…….well time for a wake up call Katie, you are!
You clearly don't watch GCN Tech show. They have a thing called the bike vault. It's a bit of fun where they review bikes and rate them Nice or Super Nice. It's not elitism but a bit of fun so viewers can send in pictures of their bikes. You are taking this GCN video far to seriously.
Katie. I love your down to earth personality and always look at your chanel for honest reviews. GCN are good but I agree... there is too much snobbery in cycling. We cyclists have enough enemies (lots of car drivers) without turning on our own. Cyclists ought to support one another. I'm glad you took their mention as it was meant... tongue in cheek. But great that they mentioned your name! Whoop! Whoop! Xx
You’re all good Katie - the GCN thing is like a tongue in cheek thing, how they rate the bike pics - there is a very specific ‘etiquette’ on how the bike must be presented for proper form - side on, ‘biggie smalls’ gears selected, etc etc. My main takeaway, props to you for making it to the point as a cycling RUclipsr that you’re one of the people on GCN’s radar! Your content is much better than theirs usually anyway ;)
Yay it's katie 😊 I've been drinking, sorry. Im on my hols. But truth comes out when I'm drunk. She's a top lady who knows her cycling stuff. And she's so nice and kind apart from the obvious swearing😂 ❤
GREAT VIDEO KK. I love GCN and thought at first they were being very harsh to you. Then when they reviewed their own mate Connor and gave his worse than yours, i guess it put it into perspective, as just silliness. looking on the bright side they gave you free advertising pointing anyone who doesnt already follow you directly to you. BUT .. In the end everything you said was correct. So well done.
I've watched many of Katie's videos, and I think this was one of the most fun ones I've ever sat through. I had no idea she knew language like this! 🤬🤣 England, and Canada still have that in common thank God! 😂 You tell them Katie! 👍
commuting home in a couple of hours and I have on mismatched socks, jersey that isn't the match to my bibs, jacket that doesn't match either of them, a muddy bottle from my MTB, MTB shoes and MTB helmet. I'm probably going to get laughed off the road, but it will be the best 25 miles of my day. Love that you are real and your mission to promote cycling. These sport cycling issues with sock length, bike brand/set-up, how you wear your glasses, kits matching, strava or it didn't happen, data stats, how you have to photo your bike, etc, etc etc. i don't get it. what became of the pure fun of riding your bike? Absolutely love the rant BTW.
Interestingly I am less watching GCN probably because of this high level approach. No offense now I tend to watch videos where we are down to earth. Good job Katie. This is what I am looking for: authenticity. Keep up the good job. A follower from Canada.
Hi Katie, we (your subscribers) know what you’re about & like your genuine enthusiasm for cycling & so don’t worry about other opinions especially from ex professional rider presenters on GCN! Love your content! 🚴🏻♂️😎❤️👍
I think you were channeling some Roy Kent vibes today? Don't let them get to you; you do you cause everyone else is already taken. Keep up the great work!
The whole point of the GCN bike reviews is the complain about everything that could possibly be considered wrong with the bike. The bike has to be in biggie smalls, cranks horizontal and valve stems down with a shadow stand. The GCN complaints are stupid and hysterical. The more complaints the funnier and your expletive filled rage response is 10/10. Thank you!
I agree with you, the attitude is insane. "my" (by now) 14 yr old rides an expensive frame, but with 3X7 gears (mostly built on tourney/acera stuff), and the amount of comments she gets about it from "cyclists" at traffic lights that apparently find it a shame to ride an expensive bike with a cheap groupset is insane. She doesn't get intimidated by it anymore, because she chose that setup to keep it cheap, and because she also uses the bike for commuting to school, friends, shopping etc. Who on earth would ride ultegra/dura-ace and park it outside school, just sitting in the rain, other kids bumping their bikes into it etc? She prefers to keep the costs down, and use the money she has to travel, and eat while she's out. 2 days it took her from NL to the northern tip of Denmark, I'd love to see many of those "cool cyclists" do that on their expensive bikes. Yes, it's a good frame, with a bunch of tourney, acera and chinese parts attached to it, but she has no issues riding 30 000 km/yr on it. She does have the 11 speed dura-ace/ultegra stuff that came on the bike originally, but after trying it out for a while during the summer vacation, she just concluded "the only real difference was that there were more shifts between the gears she actually uses, and it wasn't worth the money that it costs to maintain it. 😁
I think it's all a bit tongue in cheek to be fair. They did one last week talking about overrated tech, and suggesting that it was the riding that was more important than the acquisition of the latest kit.
Agreed. I won't suggest that it's an insider cycling RUclips plot to give channels content but it did cross my mind.
Yeah I think Kate missed the point on this one, it’s a little tongue In cheek, and a p!ss on the rules
I'm not sure if its an honour to be on a list with Lance Armstrong... but other than that I agree.
Yep that's spot on
They do this making fun of the "elitism" I think. One of their best segments. Love your content but its good to laugh at yourself.
Love GCN - it is a bit of light hearted fun
I know! Unnecessary rant from Katie. It is Ollie ffs, tongue-in-cheek!
They are applying the GCN “Bike Vault” rules. Has nothing to do with being a PRO. The bike vault is where everyday people post pictures of their bike.
1. The valves must be aligned either 12:00 or 6:00
2. Must be in Big chain ring and small
3. Pedals level
4. Picture taken directly 90degrees at the drive side.
It is typically all in fun.
❤
Also, no chimneys (uncut steerers).
@@jaredlash5002 and a gold chain earns you a fist bump!
People submit their pictures of bikes following their criteria, I had never seen them doing that with pictures people did not submit for that segment... which is very weird and boring to tell you the truth.
That's hilarious
So you watch GCN for free, and object to them riding sponsored gear. How do you propose they fund your expensive “free” content ?
Thanks for inspiring all of us to get out and ride, Katie!!!
F bomb alert! 💣😂
Katie, thanks for being you and sharing your experiences!
oh dear - confected outrage does get lots of people going right. It's totally tongue in cheek from a crew that are adding an awful lot to cycling pleasure around the world. (But then I did get a supernice one week 🙂) Love what you do too KK.
Thank youuuu Katiiiiie
When I first got into cycling GCN was a super helpful, entertaining and educational resource. Dan, Matt and Ollie were my online mentors. However, while I subscribe to GCN+ for their racing coverage I have not watched any of their RUclips content for years. There is much more entertaining content on RUclips these days.
I’m sure it’s all tongue in cheek, but it’s a shame to see they haven’t out grown this type of dumbed-down, low hanging fruit content.
Keep doing what you’re doing, Katie ❤
Exactly.
NONSENSE ALL OF IT
@fionahunt8530 exactly this they even do it to each others bike it's a reoccurring joke
I was waiting for this reaction!
It's just a bit of a laugh Katie. They are somewhat sending up cycling aesthetics. 50% tongue in cheek, 50% nerdy roadie business.
Let it go Katie, we know your position and the reality of your content.
Various criteria- drive side, biggy smalls gears, no chimney (steerer tube), tyres & valves aligned, cranks level, no accessories, matching bottles etc etc etc
Just a bit of fun
I agree with you 1000%
While we all might lust after the super bike, latest tech, and the nice shiny bits.
Why don’t you ride Ribble anymore?
Who else thinks that Katie's next adventure should be a visit to GCN headquarters, with her Windspace AND mis-matched water bottles. She could then set the QOM on their piddling little local climb and show them what a normal, Northern cycling lass is all about.
You know, just for a bit of fun.
In a QOM challenge against Manon she wouldn't stand a chance!
Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that. It certainly would be an absolute, must-see video. Let's hope it happens 👍
It's winspace donut
GCN's rate my bike section isn't meant to be that serious, it's a bit more 'tongue in cheek' section. Don't let them annoy you Katie.
Here, here Katie…..you are NOT an influencer…..you are an INSPIRATION. Go girl.
GCN are the stealth influencers in my humble view. Influencing people to spend more. Katie is down to earth, genuine, and cares for her viewers.
Two things -
1; GCN is basically Top Gear for bikes
2; Completely agree about elitism in cycling.
Totally nailed it Katie 👊👊
Katie, you’ve got ‘em!!!! Do a true reaction vid to theirs then reach out to their peeps and to a collab. Go girl!
Give them hell of rant katie . The gcn is doing nit-picking because they got nothing good to say.
The whole bit is meant to be nitpicky. Nitpicking is part of the plenty they have to say
Katie, as other have pointed out, Ollie and Alex from GCN were just having fun. 😉If you watch their weekly show you'll see it's all tongue and cheek. As an aside, they also regularly speak out against elitism in cycling.
Hahaha yup, you didn't watch the video to the end did you?
@@KatieKookaburraI did, enjoy all your content. Keep up the good work. 👍
It's like you watched Les Miserables and got pissed and started ranting that they started Singing.
this :)
Katie, you do what you “do” extremely well. Don’t change a thing. 😊
Hi Katie.
Quick inquiry… why not on the Ribble anymore?
@@andrewnorris5415 very well said completely agree
@@redauwg911 thanks!
I like your approach of not being an influencer!
Aww bless!
Quality rant 😂 Keep on keeping it real!
🤣🤣🤣. Truly love this episode Katie! Love the rant to those two goofballs. Don’t ever change Katie. Cheers!
We all need Evian bottles in our cages! I love GCN, and I love your rant. You are an inspiration.
nice one Katie, as they in NZ stay cool till after school, take care and may the road never end on enjoying life on two wheels
GCN is getting harder to watch they need some fresh ideas
😂😂 Needs to have valves and tyre logos lined up, nice back ground, cranks level.... biggie smalls.... love it lol
To be honest.... GCN (fun) rules rate bike "nice", KK (rated by us....) "Supernice" 😁
commuting home in a couple of hours and I have on mismatched socks, jersey that isn't the match to my bibs, jacket that doesn't match either of them, a muddy bottle from my MTB, MTB shoes and MTB helmet.
Hi Katie was just wondering why u don't ride ribble anymore?
What is your cassette range on your Winspace? Did you keep the 11-40?
Thank you!
LOVE YOU VIDRO do love new bike things but don't care what other people ride ride what makes you happy and keep riding.
