Happy 200th birthy, Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy). It is was May 7th, 1824 that Beethoven premiered this 9th and final symphony in the Karnthnerthor Theater in Vienna. It is considered by many to be his triumphant work, and even those who submit other works as his paramouth will agree there is something truly uplifting about his last completed symphony. He wrote every note strictly by the power of his mind and his previous experience with music. That alone is a testament to his skilll and devotion to music. A bittersweet note to end on, it is true that Beethoven did not actually conduct his final symphony. This was no insult to him since he was aware of his condition, but he dutifully stood at the conductor's post while the orchestra was discretely lead by Michael Umlauf. But that is not the moment I speak of. That is but the setup. When the performance was over, Beethoven was so distraught and uncertain of how the audience would react that he did not turn around. Some argue it was because he was not able to hear his own orchestra, which was true, but it was also because he could not bear the thought of failing the audience. In a moment of sympathy, the contraltro, Caroline Unger, left her place, came to Beethoven, and gently turned him around so he could witness the rousing applause. Music and Dance are both the truest and greatest universal languages. For they transcend boundaries and arbitrary barriers. Regardless of race, ethnicity, nation, culture, creed, ideology and language; melody, rythem, emotion and the creative spark reaches out to us all in kinship; for they speak to something deep inside us all, to reach out and touch and move each other. For all of humanities follies, failings and transgressions; it is perhaps this ember of music and dance; that can redeem all of humankind.

I get what he’s saying but at the same time, even the hood would stop and listen if a full orchestra started playing perfect Beethoven in the middle of the park in the middle of the day
In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful videos in the entire internet. The Ode to joy / Die Ode an die Freude is just one of the biggest symbols for love joy and humanity.
Since the very first time I saw this years ago, until now, I am moved to tears. There is no better example of how moving music can be, and how it deeply it touches the heart. Beethoven understood.
Too bad the composer is a total prick. I don’t remember where the original video is, but someone commented and asked what the song was. He said something like, “durrr, maybe you should go back to grade school.” I mean, what an elitist twat that guy is.
To this day, it always makes me smile that after hundreds of years, music by Beethoven and the likes is still played, applauded and listened to by young and old, from Rap fan to metal head, from EDM fans to country fans, they all heard Ode to Joy in particular at some point in their life, and to this day I believe that Beethoven's 9th Symphony is the closest we ever got to perfection, not just because it is in my opinion the greatest musical piece ever written but because it captivates everyone, no matter who you are, you will stop and listen to the Ode to Joy.
@@sniperpig049 He very clearly wrote "Alle Menschen werden Brüder" and not "Alle Europäer werden Brüder". Whether or not he included POC in Menschen doesn't matter. The author's intent doesn't matter when everyone else interprets it differently. Besides, there are plenty of Europeans who are black or asian.
@@strange144 black and asian are black and asian. Not european. European is a part of a subspecies, not a nationality. Beethoven was not a stupid man, when he says alle menschen, he's referring to the constant wars between europe and themselves.
I'm a 34 year old American Veteran. I can watch the most graphic videos on WorldStar and LiveLeak without even a flinch. I can Netflix & Chill the sappiest of the sappy chick flicks with my girlfriend without so much as a sniffle. However no many how many times I've watched this (and I'm pretty sure it's over 100 now), each and every time it makes my face a watery, sloppy, mess. The gesture from the orchestra, the quality of the music, the positive effect it has on the unsuspecting audience, especially the children. It's all so overwhelming with beauty that I cannot watch this video without it ending in a runny nose and trickling tears down a very wide smile in awe of one of most beautiful things I've ever seen.
+pyrovet Sir, your ability to be moved to tears by something as beautiful as this only proves that you have not lost your humanity. I too get moved by this but I lack the ability to express myself as elegantly as you. Thank you for your service - and for your honesty.
+pyrovet Thank you for your service, sir. Respect. This video has brought me back from ugly darkness many times. It's both moving and hopeful. Hmm, the power of music.
commented several years ago that that young girl in the beginning dropped a quarter into God's Jukebox. whether you are a believer or not i hope you understand the meaning of my statement. i still think its the greatest single piece of music ever penned. the group performing this were immaculate.
This was not random. It wasn't a flash mob. It is simply a commercial for Sabadel, a French bank. The musicians were either hired by the bank or were bank employees. Naturally, none of this makes the performance any less glorious.
"You lot. You spend all your time thinking about dying. Like you’re going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids. But you never take the time to imagine the impossible. That maybe you survive."
It's ironic my grandfather first showed me this video and, requested it to be played at his funeral. So now this ode to joy only ever brings me to tears remembering him. It's still a beautiful peice but damn I break apart every time I hear it.
Good music is good music. There ere, are and will be talented people out there, whose talent to transfer feelings into sound will always make us stay in awe. I am not pretending to know it all, and i sure as hell won`t throw around some psudo philosophical sentences here about all umans being brothers and sisters, or some other crap like that. I just say this: Anybody else gets shivers, when this bulids up slowly? That is it. You don`t need a reason to love this
Apemanwithcalculator- I am glad that you consider Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, people who ran concentration camps, gulags, Unit 731, or participated in Rape of Nanking a human beings... Good to know that cheaters, liars, pedophiles, murderers too have souls... All the more reasons to hate humans for me
Music is the universal language among humanity it transcends spoken word and thought and can unite us as a species if we let it we are all the same regardless of national origin, religion etc, I’m an Aquarius I know what I’m talking about, I am reclusive but I believe in the brotherhood/sisterhood of humanity
As you can see in the video the music connected all people regardless of whether they were children, adults, older people, whites, blacks, Europeans, Asians etc ... Because music is what connects us all!
This song isn't just about Europe the EU cut parts of the lyrics out for their anthem for a reason. The lyrics are joy to the *world* where each man becomes brother. I don't blame Eu for using this song tho it's great song about unity but the reality is it's the anthem when the entire planet is unified. Anthem of world peace. Beethoven knew the score. Ps this is the global version it doesn't repeat the first verse of the poem like the EU version they sing the entire poem..
I love watching this. It always brings tears to my eyes. The music is ABSOLUTELY beautiful, but the enjoyment on the faces of the people in the crowd is priceless!!!
You know goddamn well that Beethoven is a genius when he creates this music without even hearing it and knows damn well that this music will touch human emotions, even centuries after.
Yeah probably could have made your point about a great man without lacing your comment with blasphemy and profanity, I'm sure Ludwig would agree that a man who can't express himself without resorting to bad language shouldn't express himself so loudly.
The point is not that Beethoven couldn't heard what he created. We are the unluck ones, because we will never know for sure what he created in his mind. Maybe this was even greater when he composed this, but he couldn't do the fine adjustments to it.
Ups and downs, personally I enjoy being American, but having amazing trips to Europe which makes it more exiting and fun actually makes experiencing stuff like this even better..
At 70 years old I never thought tears would fill my eyes whilst watching something on RUclips. I have looked at several downloads of this, one of my favourite pieces of music, but since finding this flashmob version last year I watch it at least once a week. I’m only 29 years old and I was brought to tears by this amazing piece of one of humanities greatest works, at 70 I can’t imagine the experience and wisdom you could share with others, too many people my generation are shortsighted and lack any original thoughts in them it’s sad to think about relying on the old with nothing new in the works
Inspiration for anything this powerful is divine. The opening notes get me immediately and have the same effect on me as they do for you. Utterly amazing beauty.

Seems you got to learn a bit 'Lord': the poem is from Friedrich Schiller, one of Germany greatest brains in literature, a companion of Goethe and originally called: Ode an die Freude!!! They both lived a short period before Beethoven and therefore he could really use it for his superior symphony. Enjoy it!

Beethoven suffered from hearing loss and ultimately became completely deaf :)
+Hatake Kyasarin Of course, he composed his Ninth Symphony, which contained the part known now as the Ode to Joy, while he was completely deaf. Just unbelievable.
After watching this I'm convinced that music is the answer to world peace.
It doesn't matter what kind of music. But I think the most likely music that will answer to world peace is the Classical Music.

Non ce ne frega un cazzo della tua opinione
I AGREE. I have seen this many, many times and each time i am filled with emotion and end up crying.
Since the very first time I saw this years ago, until now, I am moved to tears. There is no better example of how moving music can be, and how it deeply it touches the heart.
Beethoven understood.
I can't agree more. The joy in the little ones faces, and old ones alike. I watch this when I need an up lifting moment. Purely genius Mr. Beethoven!
Music understood.
It just so happens that Ludwig wrote this beautiful piece.
Too bad the composer is a total prick. I don’t remember where the original video is, but someone commented and asked what the song was. He said something like, “durrr, maybe you should go back to grade school.” I mean, what an elitist twat that guy is.
I’m still moved to tears when I hear this. It just incredible when music can do. Music is life.
Indeed, if this doesn't bring tears to the eye, then nothing will.

Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt*;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder*
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen
Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben
und der Cherub steht vor Gott.
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum siegen.
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!

"Ode to Joy" English
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity,
Daughter from Elysium,
We enter, drunk with fire,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary!
Your magics join again
What custom strictly divided;*
All people become brothers,*
Where your gentle wing abides.
Who has succeeded in the great attempt,
To be a friend's friend,
Whoever has won a lovely woman,
Add his to the jubilation!
Indeed, who calls at least one soul
Theirs upon this world!
And whoever never managed, shall steal himself
Weeping away from this union.
All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
[Even] the worm has been granted sensuality,
And the cherub stands before God!
Gladly, as His heavenly bodies fly
On their courses through the heavens,
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.
You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.

Et qui jamais ne le put,
Qu'il se retire en tristesse de cette union !La joie, tous les êtres en boivent
Aux seins de la nature;
Tous les bons, tous les méchants,
Suivent sa trace de rose.Elle nous donna les baisers et la vigne;

La volupté fut donnée au vermisseau,
Et le Chérubin se tient devant Dieu.Joyeux comme volent ses soleils

+DevTricks silly people its all inside job
Well, that and restoring and maintaining homogeneous European populations instead of watching western civilization welcome its own subversion and destruction.
+Sergeant Schultz A narrow view that displays fear and anxiety instead of love and inclusion. This work is about all mankind, not just a few of your friends.
+Walter Lyczkowski Your highminded opinion is not much of solace, when your culture is endagered.
this video is how I introduced my daughter to classical music and to say that this has become a favorite for her is the understatement of all time.. When I pick her up the first thing she says is daddy let me have you phone and she will hope on RUclips and plug it into the car audio system and play this video for the 50+ minute home and she will hum and sing along and before anyone says that's just a cute little girl thing.. she is 11 yrs old straight A student in school.... My daughter will carry the classics for us here in Durham Region Canada because the young people in cars around us for the most part look at our car confused others with Awww and the best is when we see someone who smiles and understands.
My sons first exposure to classic through computer game that plays Pacheble's Cannon
@@nasiaking Which game? I hope it wasn't "Don't talk with strangers"...
hey does she still hum this song? :p

Comments are toxic as f. Seems like trolls hating the culture. I admire you for raising a child with such passion for good music. I pray it will continue!
I absolutely love this video and always come back to it. The musicians that have mastered their instrument, the vocalists who have mastered their voices and the pure joy in the audiences faces brings me pure joy!
Mantears were shed

Dittos are op
Every damn time. And I've watched this a lot.
fulltimespy there should be no shame on your game bro. I have watched this add plenty of times and each time I get my eyes wet.
It's the audience/people that move me as much as the fun of the performance. Catalonians, I believe. just beautiful!

+iMcNASS Good for you. :)
haha thanks ... as a music lover , i just feel that i shouldn't have to search for it on google or youtube xD
First time watching this : goosebumps and tears
17 times watching this : goosebumps and tears
The best part about this is seeing how much all the little kids enjoy the music. So precious (:
I'd rather say the best part is seeing ADULTS enjoying the music. Kids are wowed by pretty much anything, but once you grown up, less and less things "wow" your life...like the guy at 4:09 with long hair clearly saying "WOW" that to me is amazing!!!
Joel V yeh i agree with you. these are spiritual events of the highest order, how they bring the look of wonder and delight in people's faces. I can't get over them. Wonderful development out of the internet age. Just think of it; this was a bank's commercial. Wonderful.
***** So do I :)
Helen Lauer I agree with you too, this is priceless :)
Ironic that Ode to Joy always makes me want to cry.
Tears of joy are a thing :-)
The aged lady charmed by the beauty of the music...
The little ones smiling, dancing, having fun...
The expression on this man's fan, the light in his eyes as he goes: "WOW' and so many more wonderful images, assembled in a truly beautiful clip to go along with this gloriously great music...
I hope these musicians and singers. somehow, get to hear my thanks for this awsome moment that I owe to them!...
