    What makes this flashmob one of the best performances of "Ode to Joy" is the way it starts so simply, with a lone bass; and then gradually builds in majesty as more musicians join in. I like to think that the audience in the square were surprised when the singers began: "Oh! Those aren't just random dudes watching the performance; that's a *chorus*!"

      @@jasonmonto9485 Very true. But I suspect the audio was recorded separately and overdubbed. I kinda doubt an outdoor performance in a public square would be quite so clear, with no crowd noise or wonky acoustics. Doesn't make it any less wonderful to see, of course.

    Happy 200th birthy, Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy). It is was May 7th, 1824 that Beethoven premiered this 9th and final symphony in the Karnthnerthor Theater in Vienna. It is considered by many to be his triumphant work, and even those who submit other works as his paramouth will agree there is something truly uplifting about his last completed symphony. As most people know but it worth mentioning for those who do not know, Ludwig von Beethoven was completely deaf by the time he wrote this symphony. He wrote every note strictly by the power of his mind and his previous experience with music. That alone is a testament to his skilll and devotion to music.
    A bittersweet note to end on, it is true that Beethoven did not actually conduct his final symphony. This was no insult to him since he was aware of his condition, but he dutifully stood at the conductor's post while the orchestra was discretely lead by Michael Umlauf. But that is not the moment I speak of. That is but the setup.
    When the performance was over, Beethoven was so distraught and uncertain of how the audience would react that he did not turn around. Some argue it was because he was not able to hear his own orchestra, which was true, but it was also because he could not bear the thought of failing the audience. In a moment of sympathy, the contraltro, Caroline Unger, left her place, came to Beethoven, and gently turned him around so he could witness the rousing applause. It is reported upon seeing the delight of the people, Beethoven whispered in wonder, "Mien Meisterstruck.' ("My masterpiece").

    This is perhaps my favorite playing of this song specifically because you can hear people milling about and doing their business in the square. Music is not just for stuffy galas and auditoriums. Music is for the *people*
    By having more music in the world, we make the world a better place...we should never lock music away behind closed doors and concert halls, it should be played in the street among the people and all should be allowed to marvel at the craft, skill, and joy of the performers

      For they transcend boundaries and arbitrary barriers. Regardless of race, ethnicity, nation, culture, creed, ideology and language; melody, rythem, emotion and the creative spark reaches out to us all in kinship; for they speak to something deep inside us all, to reach out and touch and move each other.

    To this day, it always makes me smile that after hundreds of years, music by Beethoven and the likes is still played, applauded and listened to by young and old, from Rap fan to metal head, from EDM fans to country fans, they all heard Ode to Joy in particular at some point in their life, and to this day I believe that Beethoven's 9th Symphony is the closest we ever got to perfection, not just because it is in my opinion the greatest musical piece ever written but because it captivates everyone, no matter who you are, you will stop and listen to the Ode to Joy.

The gesture from the orchestra, the quality of the music, the positive effect it has on the unsuspecting audience, especially the children. I don't blame Eu for using this song tho it's great song about unity but the reality is it's the anthem when the entire planet is unified. Anthem of world peace. Beethoven knew the score. Some Lyrics on different Languages:
    "Ode an die Freude" German aka. Original
    Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
    Tochter aus Elysium,
    Wir betreten feuertrunken,
    Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
    Deine Zauber binden wieder
    Was die Mode streng geteilt*;
    Alle Menschen werden Brüder*
    Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
    Wem der große Wurf gelungen
    Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
    Wer ein holdes Weib errungen
    Mische seinen Jubel ein!
    Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
    Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
    Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
    Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
    Freude trinken alle Wesen
    An den Brüsten der Natur;
    Alle Guten, alle Bösen
    Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
    Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
    Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
    Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben
    und der Cherub steht vor Gott.
    Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
    Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan
    Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
    Freudig, wie ein Held zum siegen.
    Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
    Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
    Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
    Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
    Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
    Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
    Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
    Über Sternen muß er wohnen.
    "Ode to Joy" English
    Joy, beautiful spark of divinity,
    Daughter from Elysium,
    We enter, drunk with fire,
    Heavenly, thy sanctuary!
    Your magics join again
    What custom strictly divided;*
    All people become brothers,*
    Where your gentle wing abides.
    Who has succeeded in the great attempt,
    To be a friend's friend,
    Whoever has won a lovely woman,
    Add his to the jubilation!
    Indeed, who calls at least one soul
    Theirs upon this world!
    And whoever never managed, shall steal himself
    Weeping away from this union.
    All creatures drink of joy
    At nature's breast.
    Just and unjust
    Alike taste of her gift;
    She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
    A tried friend to the end.
    [Even] the worm has been granted sensuality,
    And the cherub stands before God!
    Gladly, as His heavenly bodies fly
    On their courses through the heavens,
    Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
    As a hero going to conquest.
    You millions, I embrace you.
    This kiss is for all the world!
    Brothers, above the starry canopy
    There must dwell a loving Father.
    Do you fall in worship, you millions?
    World, do you know your creator?
    Seek him in the heavens;
    Above the stars must He dwell.
    "Ode à la joie" French
    Ô amis, pas de ces accents !
    Mais laissez-nous en entonner de plus agréables,
    Et de plus joyeux !Joie, belle étincelle divine,
    Fille de l'assemblée des dieux,
    Nous pénétrons, ivres de feu,
    Céleste, ton royaume !
    Tes magies renouent
    Ce que les coutumes avec rigueur divisent;
    Tous les humains deviennent frères,
    Là où ta douce aile s'étend.Que celui qui a su trouver la chance,
    D'un ami être un ami;
    Qui a faite sienne une femme accorte,
    Joigne à nous son allégresse !Oui, même celui qui ne nomme sienne
    Qu'une seule âme sur tout le pourtour de la terre !
    Et qui jamais ne le put,
    Qu'il se retire en tristesse de cette union !La joie, tous les êtres en boivent
    Aux seins de la nature;
    Tous les bons, tous les méchants,
    Suivent sa trace de rose.Elle nous donna les baisers et la vigne;
    Un ami, éprouvé jusque dans la mort;
    La volupté fut donnée au vermisseau,
    Et le Chérubin se tient devant Dieu.Joyeux comme volent ses soleils
    Au travers du somptueux plan du ciel,
    Allez, frères, votre voie,
    Joyeux comme héros à la victoire.Soyez enlacés, millions.
    Ce baiser de toute la terre !
    Frères ! Au-dessus de la voûte étoilée
    Doit habiter un très cher Père.Vous fondez à terre, millions ?
    Pressens-tu le Créateur, monde ?
    Cherche-le par-delà le firmament !
    C'est sur les étoiles qu'il doit habiter.
    "Ωδή Στη Χαρά" Greek
    Ω φίλοι, όχι μ' αυτούς τους ήχους,
    αλλά μαζί ας τραγουδήσουμε πιο ευφρόσυνους,
    πιο γεμάτους Χαρά!Χαρά, απ' τις θεές πιο ωραία,
    των Ηλυσίων κόρη,
    πυρά πιωμένοι προχωρούμε,
    στο καταφύγιό σου, Θεία!
    Η μαγεία σου ξαναενώνει,
    ό, τι εχώρισε ο συρμός,
    όλοι οι άνθρωποι είναι αδέλφια,
    στο δικό σου το φτερό.Όποιος ένοιωσε ευλογία,
    φίλος του φίλου να γενεί,
    και χαρά ας έχει όποιος

    ας μπουν στον αίνο μας αυτό!
    Κι από τον κύκλο μας ας φύγουν
    με κλάμα, οι μοναχοί, πικρό.Χαρά τα πλάσματα βυζαίνουν,
    από της Φύσης τον μαστό.
    Όλοι οι καλοί, όλοι οι φαύλοι
    ακολουθούν το ρόδο αυτό.Φιλιά μας έδωσε και φρούτα,
    φίλο ως τον θάνατο πιστό,
    χαρά γεμάτα τα σκουλήκια,
    κι οι άγγελοι μπρος στον Θεό!Χαρά, όπως στρέφονται οι πλανήτες,
    που έσπειρε Αυτός στον ουρανό.
    Χαρά, μ' αυτήν εμπρός στην νίκη,
    σαν ήρωες, αδέλφια, μπρος!Ενωθείτε Μυριάδες,
    για τον κόσμο όλο το φιλί
    πάνω απ'τ'αστέρια, αδέλφια,
    γλυκός Πατέρας κατοικεί!
    Τον προσκυνάτε, Μυριάδες;
    Τον Πλάστη σου, γνωρίζεις, Γη;
    Ψάξε Τον πάνω από τ' αστέρια,
    στους ουρανούς, που κατοικείΕνωθείτε Μυριάδες,
    για τον κόσμο όλο το φιλί
    πάνω απ'τ'αστέρια, αδέλφια,

      Seems you got to learn a bit 'Lord': the poem is from Friedrich Schiller, one of Germany greatest brains in literature, a companion of Goethe and originally called: Ode an die Freude!!! They both lived a short period before Beethoven and therefore he could really use it for his superior symphony. Enjoy it!

When I pick her up the first thing she says is daddy let me have you phone and she will hope on RUclips and plug it into the car audio system and play this video for the 50+ minute home and she will hum and sing along and before anyone says that's just a cute little girl thing.. she is 11 yrs old straight A student in school.... My daughter will carry the classics for us here in Durham Region Canada because the young people in cars around us for the most part look at our car confused others with Awww and the best is when we see someone who smiles and understands.

    The best part about this is seeing how much all the little kids enjoy the music. So precious (:

      I'd rather say the best part is seeing ADULTS enjoying the music. Kids are wowed by pretty much anything, but once you grown up, less and less things "wow" your life...like the guy at 4:09 with long hair clearly saying "WOW" that to me is amazing!!!

      Joel V yeh i agree with you. these are spiritual events of the highest order, how they bring the look of wonder and delight in people's faces. I can't get over them. Wonderful development out of the internet age. Just think of it; this was a bank's commercial. Wonderful.

    The aged lady charmed by the beauty of the music...
    The little ones smiling, dancing, having fun...
    The expression on this man's fan, the light in his eyes as he goes: "WOW' and so many more wonderful images, assembled in a truly beautiful clip to go along with this gloriously great music...
    I hope these musicians and singers. somehow, get to hear my thanks for this awsome moment that I owe to them!...
