You don't have to use the vacuum advance I don't use it at all I usually don't even hook up the vacuum advance I adjust it once I adjust it that's where I leave it
I'm installing a similar HEI dizzy on a '93 F-150 with the 300 six. Yes, the dizzy is for this application. Am I wrong to assume the wiring is similar?
All you need to know is firing order. And rotation of the rotor. And one can be number 1. As long as the wires fit. And the you are definitely top dead center on the proper stroke.
Hey do you have a video about how you wired it? My plugs are different from the distributor to the coil. I have the same HEI distributor set up though too on a 78 460.
@@ReverseGear ha! No worries. I have an additional set of wires that it came with and a female plug from the old set up. I wasn't sure if there's a separate plug to buy or if you hard wired.
I have the same engine and distributor in my '70 F-250. I bought the truck like this. The previous owner bought a thermostat housing that was "pre-shaped" for the tight fit. For limited rotation timing movement...all you have to do is move all the spark wires 1 or 2 holes over from where they are now and you will gain distance from where your vacuum advance hits the thermostat housing. BTW...for future videos...could you speak a little louder?
i got one of these for my 77 F150 460.. my oil pump drive shaft does not fit it.. the distributor has a 1/4" hex drive hole, and my original distributor has a 5/16"..the gear also seems smaller.
If you don't have a coil or anything (I bought the red cap HEI), and are just hooking up to power, which color wire in the ignition switch would you splice into? I've got the same wires in my 72, except they're uh...not so pretty. Had a book somewhere but I can't find it for the life of me
I really like the 460 Ford truck videos. But in the video you said there were more videos about your truck and after clicking on your channel all I could find was demolition derby videos?? And a few other randoms?? I only ask because I have a 74 f 250 / 460 big block.. I actually ordered and received a HEI distributor but after looking at it I realized it didn't have a pen holding the oil gear in place? So after asking quite a few people and being told it should have one in it. I sent it back. And got a refund . By the way good video. thumbs up and I'll subscribe for some new Ford videos lol 👍👌
Yah sorry. I drive it full time. So I can't always take time to video stuff. Since I need it done to get to work. But I can do a update video on recent mods.
@@ReverseGear ok thank you I figured it would never installed this type of distributor into a Ford.. gets kind of confusing swapping things out to aftermarket ..got tired of my old distributor always failing this should be a good upgrade .
HEI distributor? Eew whay didn't you go full MSD? I assume you probably figure out by now, pull the Dist and turn the rotor a couple teeth counter clock wise and your distributor will be rotated way better with the vacuum advance straight forward or move all your plug wires 2 plugs clockwise, turn the distributor counter clockwise.
HEI for the same reason Chevy guys drive Chevys. It was cheap. It took some playing. But it adjusts fine now. MSD maybe when I finish building the second engine.
Not starting an argument with you or trashing on you so no disrespect intended. its your truck, do what you like but i have no idea why Chevy guys run them aside form them being the only stock option, most i know dont. maybe convenience all in one package?, The reason most people prefer the MSD over the factory unit is because their MSD operates smoothly at higher RPM. The factory HEI has issues above 4,500 to 4,800 RPM where the module will not fire the coil reliably and the actual voltage at the coil drops off due to heat build up inside the HEI module. Transistors in general do not like excessive heat and the GM module suffers noticeably from heat build up at high RPM. It was odd to me so i asked :)
+miketlane No problem. I am just a joker. This one is a modified cnc version. Amazing quality for a 60 buck eBay buy. I had to turn back the Advance. And haven't noticed any high end float. Like I said odd to find something that seems to work this good. I have a MSD on the 302 project.
+Reverse Gear well I can't argue with cheap haha. I'm swapping out a 351m for a 460 in my 77 f250. hit a snag today, wrong oil pan and the new one won't be here till next weekend
+miketlane That is the only problem with Ford. Too many options. Can make it hard to do swaps. My 68 was a nightmare switching to power steering. Frame was different on some.
Not really. A 360 ia a FE engine. And this is a 385 series engine. I have never looked to see if they make a HEI for a FE. But if they do. eBay is the cheapest.
I did both. But this video shows the final position. I only ground a tiny bit on my thermostat housing. It wouldn't seat all the way down. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, man! Needed a visual to get my distributor in the right place, was having a hard time with initial timing and this fixed it.
No problem, it's a real pain isn't it? Thank's for watching commenting.

Maybe I should video the big six installation.
Wiring should be similar. But I'm not familiar with how they wired that truck. Or what system they were using. Good luck. And ya. Definitely film it.
Trying to figure out what spark plug goes to what plug can't find any digram on it

No I couldn't. It would show too many details of my homemade security system.

Love the heater box mod. LOL

Sounds like they messed up your order. They look similar. But are many differences.

Bob Saget I ran a new one. Because the stock wire is resister wire.

I got the same distributor and engine do I just copy the fireing order from the old distributor..15426378 counter clockwise..
Firing order stays the same as the engine you put it in. Ignition timing is based off camshaft lobe placement.
@@ReverseGear ok thank you I figured it would never installed this type of distributor into a Ford.. gets kind of confusing swapping things out to aftermarket ..got tired of my old distributor always failing this should be a good upgrade .
Yes. It's why I did the swap. Every rebuilt/recon Ford distributor was sloppy and loose. My timing was never accurate.
did you grind the thermostat housing or the distributor itself
Thermostat.

Is this just as close to 1974 f100 360? is installing the same?

what are u referring to when u said its that low of a gear? it stays in 3rd gear
Rear axle gears.
Reverse Gear so its got a big ring gear and small pinion gear right? thanks
ok I will wait
Give me 4 and a half hours. Then just remind me. If you don't hear from me first.
ok

I think I may try to order a different thermostat housing that will allow clearance.
+Hunter Smith I see why I rotated it. My distributor has a machined notch on one bottom side.
ok thanks
I will try and double check. I kind of remember installing it better. And might not need grinding. So I will do check when I get home.
Why does it look like you are a tooth off??
No idea. It's not like it ever came with a GM distributor.
