Ryevsk, Russia, 1870. Tensions abound in the Karamazov family. Fyodor is a wealthy libertine who holds his purse strings tightly. His four grown sons include Dmitri, the eldest, an elegant officer, always broke and at odds with his father, betrothed to Katya, herself lovely and rich. The other brothers include a sterile aesthete, a factotum who is a bastard, and a monk. Family tensions erupt when Dmitri falls in love with one of his father's mistresses, the coquette Grushenka. Two brothers see Dmitri's jealousy of their father as an opportunity to inherit sooner. Acts of violence lead to the story's conclusion: trials of honor, conscience, forgiveness, and redemption.

Hahaha seriously it's the most beautiful thing I've read so far
While no Hollywood production could do justice to Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov (without running to a 10 hour marathon flick), this rendition does better than could be expected. The screenplay, while necessarily incomplete, is relatively faithful to the classic it is based on. The direction and the cast assembled for this ambitious project are stellar.
A good film, but it does not dispense with reading the book that is deep and its philosophical discussions.
Esmeralda actually there is a Russian tv series that runs about 10 hours. It’s excellent by the way. They cover the story as close as possible for a film.
@@TomPlantagenet do you have a link to this Russian tv series ? I also do think that Hollywood will have a very hard time to do justice to this masterpiece. American blockbusters do have a talent to, I don't know ho to express it, to "disinfect" the local culture in order to make it not too shocking for the average American viewer. But culturally-based content is one of the charms that made the fortune of the book (or the original film, when they make a cover).

I've just read Marilyn Monroe hoped to play Grushenka during all her life, and she was actually offered to star in this film. She refused because she was busy with her husband Arthur Miller's ongoing trial. Man, I'm reading the Brother Karamazov right now, and the idea of her as Grushenka feels like the stroke of genius I'd never tought of.
But I am also reading that this particular rendition is somewhat lame and does not justice to the novel, I wonder if Marilyn could have added some depth.
As a Dostoevsky's literature and figure "expert" (sorry for my lack of humbleness, I'm not an expert in almost anything else...), I find it a weak adaptation BUT a great movie. It's very enjoyable, it has wonderful acting, a few exciting climax moments, some really moving scenes... I come back to it from time to time and it never disappoints me. I've never seen an adapation of this book that really fulfills me. Maybe the closest adaptation in literary terms would be the 1969 russian one directed by Kirill Lavrov, Ivan Pyryev and Mikhail Ulyanov, though the histrionic actor playing Dmitri ruins it widely... About Marilyn adding depth to this Hollywood adaptation, I really can't see how she could have improved the majestic Grushenka portrayed by Maria Schell. She's really gorgeous on it.
After reading the book I described Grushenka to my wife as similar to Marilyn Monroe. I didn't know that they had even made an American movie about it.
Oh wow!! I had no idea they actually offered it to her! What a shame she gave up such an opportunity that she'd wanted on that sorry excuse of a human being, let alone a husband, who treated her horribly and did her great disservices after she was dead. He deserved to be blacklisted. Sorry, but Arthur Miller was one of the most over hyped, over glamorized, overrated writers in history.
Well Marilyn Monroe and Gruschenka definitely had a lot in common. They were both social "climbers". 😅😅😅
@@zweig2x Funny I thought Maria Schell was just awful in this role. She smiles all the time and at completely innappriate moments - no depth at all and completely unconvicing
I've watched all the trailers for TBK. All I can say is, read the book - there are no shortcuts for this one (or many books for that matter).

As a standalone movie, without reading the book it'd probably be a pretty good movie. But after reading the book, the movie feels.... Empty? There's definitely not as much of that spark that the book gave it's readers
Someone needs to remake this.
This is done in a Malayalam film in a different way- "Iyobinde Pusthakam" which means "The Book of Job" an Amal Neerad Film

They did. Watch the russian version (2009). So much better than this. The 1958 ver is catered to the american audience.

1:21 I wouldn't have recognized Kirk in his Spock - like haircut. And this film shows, that in another point in Time & Space, that Captain Picard was Kirk's domineering brother.
I saw this movie last night I felt sorry for Claire Blooms character how many of us have been in love with someone that don’t want us . I still say she should have made his brother he would have been good for her it’s all about who the man wants women’s feelings don’t count that’s what I’ve learned throw the years.

@@ae.9069 I think it depends on the translation. I have read it in constance garnett translation (superb translation btw). It is said that he is bald. While alyosha has monk hair and ivan has normal hair.
@@thomaspynchon1868 interesting , I didn't notice Dmitri was bald in the novel. But Yul Brynner was not bald, he was SHAVED, and he played absolutely every role with that haircut.

Would be decent if not for the fact that it strays so far away from the book. Father Zosima is all but eliminated from the movie, as is Rakotin. The actor playing Dmitri is for some reason completely shaved on the face and head. In the book he's described as having dark brown hair cropped to his head and combed forward with an army style mustache. His personality is also completely different from the book. In the movie he's almost stoic, even when in passion. This is completely out of character from the book. And of course the ending is completely different.
The movie always disappoints compared to the book, (see The Count of Monte Cristo) However Yul commanded the stage as always.
its a waste of time and effort making a film of the brothers karamazov. it will never ever be as good as the book. Dostoevskys novels should not be insulted by filming them

Hollywood can't make movies anymore, let things being the way they are, this is a good movie from the late era of classic movies, and you can always read the book whenever you want
