Hello, keep a steady watering schedule if your weather has been dry. Once the ground freezes you can stop. Salt marsh hay at her base will reduce the risk of fungus development. If she isn’t buffeted from the wing a barrier will help. You are correct. Don’t prune her and don’t be disappointed if her blossoms are scarce next spring. Mine took five years to finally give me a flourish of blossoms. Congratulations. 🥰

Congratulations. I love dogwoods. What type is it? Kousa? If planted in full sun you'll want to make sure it gets plenty of water. Use a drip method around the drip line and water deeply, keeping the soil evenly moist. Watch out for leaf scorch in the full sun location. A partial shade spot would be best, however. Good luck. 🌻
I planted a couple dogwood trees. One in direct sun and the other underneath our neighbors huge tree. Years later the one in sun didn’t make it and the one that sits in the shade is upwards of 12 ft, it’s canopy is wide and flowers beautifully in spring
Is there a certain time where dead branches should or should not be pruned? I have several (they haven't flowered in a couple years, no leaves, etc.) but the tree is otherwise healthy!
You can trim them off, close to the trunk or at the first sign of growth at anytime. No need to seal the cut but make sure your lopper is clean. Alcohol wipes make a good disinfectant for pruning tools. Happy gardening. 😁

When you’re watering the tree make sure you’re trickling the water around the drip line, (a soaker hose is a great tool) not at the root ball and that you’re letting the water soak deeply. Make sure you’re not watering too often which can cause root rot. Let the leaves guide you; if they are droopy and curled the tree needs more water. Watering correctly is the biggest thing you can do at the beginning for a dogwood. Add some mulch around the tree to retain moisture but don’t pile the mulch up around the base of the trunk. I’d give the tree a month to start showing growth. Dogwoods are slow growers especially when first planted. I planted a dappled willow in one of the corners of my lawn, but I'm wanting to move the willow and plant the red dogwood. This corner is about 5 feet from the driveway, and sidewalk to the house and I'm just worried that the branches will block our car from getting into the garage. I'd rather it grew tall, first. Do they usually grow out first?

HI, you have a dogwood bush, called red twig dogwood, that grows from 6 to 10 feet high with a similar spread. It will produce small white flowers in spring that develop into berries the birds love. It's a beautiful specimen, with it's deep red stems in autumn. You may not see flowers the first spring but once its established it should bloom. Happy gardening. 🌻

Its difficult to change the genetics of a tree that is wired for a certain size. I recommend you contact your local Extension office (typically at your local university) or Master Gardener Association and talk to an arborist. Good luck and happy gardening. 🌿
If it has dead lems on a lot of the tree can that part be cut off in July? I am afraid it is going to die.. it is pink and only half of it is alive.. thank for the video..

I have several dogwoods on my property that are at least 100 years old. They have grown tall and are about 2 feet in diameter. The limbs are crazy and the trunks all have years of knots and dammage from neglect. They are beautiful trees but i need advice terribly! I live in sc. I know nothing of these beautiful trees please help ! ( i like to do my own work if i can avoid hiring someone)
Hello, I love dogwoods as well. You can start with a gentle pruning of the water sprouts and suckers around the base of the tree and along the trunk. Also remove any broken limbs. Wear safety equipment: glasses, protective hat, etc. when you're working on overhead limbs. Next. contact the Clemson Cooperative Extension for further guidance. Dogwoods prefer zones below 9. They are actually perfect for cool to temperate climates and have remarkable cold tolerance. Sorry. :(
