'Once upon a time in America' is an absolute masterwork, "I think it's one of the greatest movies ever made" said James Woods "and I wish I wasn't in it so I could say that more fervently". Scorsese has often said that 'Once Upon a Time in the West' and 'Once Upon a Time in America' are cinematic masterpieces. Director James Cameron was once asked to compare 'The Godfather' vs 'Once Upon a Time in America' and he said "one is a movie, the other is cinema".

What’s crazy it was a 6 hour film and the studio cut it down to 3 which really had Leone upset as that’s how he envisioned it. Imagined had we seen the original cut.

“Unfortunately, Leone’s future is not so bright after this”… “no one took notice til later.”
    You mean, among American audiences?

Leone was revered in Europe and amongst many of those American actors he had worked with. It was on the strength of their opinion of him that actors such as Eli Wallach, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, James Coburn agreed to work with him and all said great things about him etc…
Kirk Douglas wanted the part of Cheyenne in OUATITW
John Carpenter had ‘Jill’s Theme’ played at his wedding

In Paris, France, the uncut version of Once Upon A Time… West was shown continually in one theatre for two years.

Once Upon A Time… West was also the last film on which Leone acted as full-time director. His later films were edited in the USA by their distributors which is why they failed. You have to remember that American audiences expected every film to be like ‘Herbie Rides Again.’
Or to have ‘box-office’ actors in the starring roles.

I had never heard of ‘Duck You Sucker.’ Only when you used the title ‘A Fistful Of Dynamite’ could I understood what you were talking about.

I always felt that each of Leone’s films (Dollars and Once Upon) could have been regarded as part of a Organon as they each feature an aspect of America during a different era (even though this is seen from a European perspective).

Once upon a time in the West was cut for its US realise but the movie was shown in Europe the way Leone wanted it to be. And it was a huge success, especially in France where the movie is today ranked the 7th most successful movie in the French box office history (it only counts the first exploitation of the movie).

Who really cares, tbh. Award shows are just a publicity stunt anyways. The real reward is having an impact on the culture. When everyday people are watching you, quoting you, influenced and moved by you, dressing up as your characters on Halloween -that is the greatest award of them all.

Nice explanation and yes his visuals and music are unforgettable, the music at 2:15 is ingrained in my mind from watching this over 40 years ago with my Dad. I just watched "Duck you Sucker" the other day and was telling someone about his use of extreme close ups, like of the mouth's talking in the stagecoach scene with Steiger, genius.

    seriously,
leone is passing missunderstanding maybe becaus of his political criticise opinions.
duration of moovies must not be a probleme,
after all,no one can put a doubt about genious of film maker, even music of morricone.
    it's like that.
leone makes the best ever moovies in history may be.
he deserve to have an international price or trophee or any other consecretion in his name.
to be a stranger is very tough .but maybe a reason to make something good and different against all odds.

His later movies were revered in hindsight, unfortunately. When they were released, the studios cut out a lot of what he was trying to do. We all love those movies now, because of the recent DVDs and Blu Rays that have the director's cut that was more close to his vision.
