They say Leone was in the beginning stages of working on an epic about Stalingrad before he suddenly passed away. Can only dream what the maestro would have done with the story of an epic WW2 battle.
@@romagrafici1118 Thanks for the clarification. I'll assume an Italian knows the details better than I do, as I am only recalling what I read many years ago, and certainly could have gotten the two mixed up. Personally, I'd even watch a Leone movie about toothpaste coming out of a tube (as long as Ennio scored it too).
I had read about it and Giuseppe Tornatore wanted to pursue the project. I could of actually imagined it happening seeing how I love Tornatore's films and cinematic approach to his films. However with Maestro Ennio Morricone gone ..who would of scored the film. That remains the question.
Duck You Sucker #1. I’ve always loved the longest version without knowing anyone else rated it - then Glenn Erickson’s and Sir Christopher Frayling’s knowledge and erudition later helped me see how this is, despite the comedy, Leone’s first ‘serious’ film and brutally effective in communicating his personal politics. And then, once you entertain the fullest potential meaning of the flashbacks, the film becomes something else entirely. A John Ford level masterpiece.
I can’t hear “Deborah’s Theme” without getting tears in my eyes. That movie is not only my favorite Leone film, but my favorite film of all time. It just makes me feel so many things. The amount of nostalgia sentimentality he makes me feel with that film is incredible
The combination of Sergio Lione's bold vision and the incredibly handsome Clint Eastwood mixed with Ennio Morricone's mesmerizing music was pure magic ✨️

It's interesting seeing Leone's Westerns elevated to "classic" status. When they were released they were dismissed, ignored, or ridiculed by critics. (I'm old-- I read the reviews). My favorite Leone movie: For a Few Dollars More. Incidentally, the three "Dollars" movies plus Eastwood's wretched Hang'Em High were once released in a quadruple feature to drive-ins. It made for a long, long evening. I know. I sat in the car.
I strongly disagree with your placement of “Duck, You Sucker!”, I believe the movie is one of Leone’s most beautiful and profound movies he’s ever made. I love how Seán and Juan grow throughout the film. The cinematography is truly special, especially paired with (in my opinion) Morricone’s best score. This all just my opinion but I definitely think it’s the second best Leone movie (right behind “Once Upon a Time in The West”)
The Good The Bad & The Ugly is also my favorite movie, always has been. My grandpa would let me watch Clint westerns with him even as young as 3 or 4. Cinemax has an Eastwood marathon one time and he recorded all 3 movies on VHS-Hang ‘Em High, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good The Bad & The Ugly. Throughout my childhood I wore that tape out. Was a teenager before I found and saw Fistful somehow and a little later, Once Upon A Time in the West, Which I didn’t appreciate nearly as much initially as I do now (young me missed Clint not being there). You will be pleased to know that the skeleton in the tomb at the end of the film belongs to a Spanish actress who before dying asked to be able to use her body and enter Sergio Leone's film, immortalizing her... I would say that in this film there are many things therefore, even the love of an actress who took her artistic profession seriously.
7: The Colossus of Rhodes - 2.5/4 6: Duck, You Sucker! - 3/4 5: For a Few Dollars More - 3/4 4: A Fistful of Dollars - 3.5/4 3: Once Upon a Time in America - 4/4 2: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 4/4 1: Once Upon a Time in the West - 4/4
Well I just learned that Two Mules for Sister Sara wasn't a Sergio Leone movie. I guess just because it stars Clint Eastwood and has an Ennio Morricone score doesn't automatically mean Sergio Leone.
Great ranking. I agree that Once Upon in the West is slow and that's what I like the least about it, though it's a great movie. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is also a long movie, but it doesn't waste a minute. You barely even notice that 3 hours have past when it concludes.
I own all of these movies and I love my top 4 so much that I can't put any of them behind any of the other ones. So I have 4 number 1s, and they are, in no particular order, Once upon a time in America, Once upon a time in the west, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Duck you sucker. These movies were some of the most AMAZING films ever made. We would be remiss if we didn't give the Great Ennio Morricone his due, for the AWESOME SOUNDTRACKS. His music put me in the perfect mood every single time.
My opinion is very unpolular. According to me Leone has ALWAYS improved himself. So my list "from worst to best" is perfectly equals to his filmography in cronological order: 7) Cholossus of Rhodes 6) A fistful of dollars 5) For a few dollars more 4) The Good the Bad & the Ugly 3) Once Upon a Time in the West 2) Duck You Sucker 1) Once Upon a Time in America
I really enjoyed this video. What a great way to show the fantastic work of Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone. "Once upon a time in America" is my favorite movie ever.
If you leave out the Colossus of Rhodes, I find it quite impossible to choose between the others. I often re-watch them and my choice simply depends on my mood.
Great video. One very small correction: the bad doesn't kill the entire family in the opening scene. He kills only the father and one of the sons. The lady of the house and the other little boy are spared.
I just subscribed to your channel, and I just wanted to say that you are VERY, VERY good....and I agree with another commenter, You are be the best reviewer that I've ever watched and I've watched many before finding you, yesterday.
I've still only seen 4 of his movies. Once Upon a Time in America, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Good, the Bad & the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars. I absolutely love all of them but I'll simply say that Once Upon a Time in America is the only movie that has caused me to write an email to Criterions suggestion email to request that they add it to the collection. Both inspired by how much of a masterpiece it is and by that Blu ray release being out of print lol. Great video.
I pretty much agree with this completely except I would swap the number 1 and 2 positions over. OUATITW is the greatest because of the dynamic between the main characters. It is an incredible tour de force and I don't find the pace a problem at all and it has greater emotional depth than TGTBATU. Jill is an incredible heroine and his other films don't have that.
When you have a great body of work like the films of Sergio Leone (in quality not quantity), I find it hard to put them into a list of order and prefer to think of them as a collective jewel where some facets shine a little brighter than others. The brightest facet for me is FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, which was the first Leone I saw in the cinema when it was released. I love the others too, but nothing can compare to that first feeling I had when watching something I felt was totally unique at the time. After all these years, I still enjoy viewing it. 🔫 💵
I would swap over the order of your final two - I think Once Upon A Time In The West is a more complete film. I think the dialogue, the acting, the music (I love that each character has their own musical signature) and the cinematography are at their best in Once Upon A Time In The West.
AGREED! OUATITW says some important things about character, greed, deeply meaningful friendship, shattered dreams and ambition. It hits harder than TGTBATU but then it is a different type of film. This is not as playful, as lingeringly violent and although it's much less of a road movie (all taking place in one region) it's profoundly more beautiful and contemplative.
@@LampoonGoon I liked your last line, 'profoundly more beautiful and contemplative,' I think you're spot on. I also think that OUATITW pulls more on your emotional strings. It is filled with more pathos - which is surprising when you consider TGTBATU features the American Civil War.
@@MartinKillips I think it's kinda funny how you call Once Upon A Time In The West a more complete film. Leone's intended cut of the film hasn't been available since its' European theatrical presentation in 1968. ruclips.net/video/EQAkGohR-Ac/видео.html
You’ve missed one !? which he produced & directed a few scenes & I think is the most underrated film ever “ My name is Nobody “ it’s the most gorgeous film with a brilliant Morricone soundtrack
This film is on you tube and you can clearly see which scenes Leone directed himself. Watch the scene where a dog gets up and walks across the road. Genius and totally Leone. It's a great film and highly recommended. Also one of Morricone's most under rated scores.
western classification: 1. Leone's westerns 2. other westerns the good, the bad and the ugly, I agree with everything you said, I stopped counting how many times I've watched it, even though the movie lasts almost three hours, when it's over you wonder "is it over yet?"
just spotted what looks like a industrial pig farm or similar in the back ground @ 11.22.🐽 no worries love the films anyway, probably swap one and two round.
@@IaMD.B. Most certainly - many Art Studies from great artists are great in the own right. My only point was that he perfected many of the ideas from A Fistful of Dollars in his later movies,
I agree with this list..His movies will live on... even when we are gone..The good the bad and the ugly..is the best western...I have ever seen..the music is out of this world...
The only problem with GBU is the weapons displayed are at least a decade ahead of the time period. However, this is absolutely my favorite movie of all time. Your rankings are spot on.
Hi dude, great Job doing this review. I agree with you, my list doesn't look very different than yours. I want to mention that Leone did some more (comedian) movies made in Italy that are masterpieces as well. I suggest you to watch "un sacco bello" or "Bianco Rosso e verdone" for instance, but they are in Italian language only (maybe). I don't know if there are subtitle... For me as an Italian guy I can tell, those films are just one of the bests comedy movies from Italy made in Italy :) peace and love. Oh from the Western Movies I like the most where Clint Eastwood is in there ;)
I was just going through a Leone binge. 5. Fistful of Dollars 4. Duck you Sucker! 3. For a Few Dollars More 2. Once upon a Time in America 1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly His other movies aren't free on RUclips right now 😭 But I'm grateful they uploaded those 5 incredible films for free
I also suggest My Name is Nobody - the film co-directed and co-written also by Leone. It's the kind of movie where Leone parodied everything up to that point.
"This is a movie I could watch at any time..." Not a comment I would use for Once Upon a Time in America, or Duck, You Sucker! Those should be further down the list (or change your title to Sergio Leone - Ranked From My Least To Most Favorite.
I have never even heard of #7, but I'm sure that's not surprising to you. As for #5, I have heard of it, but never saw it. But I agree with your descriptions and opinions on all the others. Absolutely spot on. I have special edition DVDs of both "Once Upon a Time" movies, and of the "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". It was interesting to find out that there were lost scenes that were added back in for that DVD. On a different note, I love the miniseries "Moses the Lawgiver", which has a musical score by Morricone. It's brilliant as always.
I agree. It is my favorite movie of all time too!!!! I think that the music in this movie is the best music I have ever heard in a western....especially at the end (trio music). The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly music I Absolutely Love, and I think the Great Danish National Orchestra did an EXCELLENT job of creating it. People should watch the RUclips video of this. It literally will bring you to tears!
GBU Might be the greatest movie of all time. The kind of movie you hear people talking about how cool and awesome it is and when you watch it is even better Also If Chris Evans shoots a Kid in the face today (in a movie) not even that would be on par with Henry Fonda killing a child in OUTW, that was a heel turn for the ages.
The final duel in once upon a time in the west is probably my favorite scene in movie history. All the buildup was worth it. I get chills every time we get Harmonica's flashback.
Once upon a time in America to me is quite comfortably 1st, it covers everything a film could possibly cover while being artistically beautiful and with one of the greatest scores in movie history. Best film I’ve ever seen.
I only saw Duck, You Sucker for the first time 2 weeks ago... it is amazing, and I am amazed that I have never really heard of it before, certainly never any buzz about it. There are a few good versions of it on RUclips, that's how I watched it on my TV.
Duck you sucker is overlooked because of its vision of politik and revolution: too personal, disillusioned and anti-romantic for a generalist audience. In Italy leftist critics destroyed the movie for this reason but the italian audience (and I'm one of them) have alwayes loved it at the same level of the other Leone's movies.

I check out a lot of movie discussion/review channels. You’re definitely one of the better ones. Keep it up, it’ll catch on
Wow, thank you so much Susan. I'll definitely keep it up!
Tell your friends to subscribe:) I'm really excited by the sudden growth of the channel, hope it continues.
Great video, and a great list. My only input would be to put America above For a Few 👏
7: The Colossus of Rhodes - 2.5/4
6: Duck, You Sucker! - 3/4
5: For a Few Dollars More - 3/4
4: A Fistful of Dollars - 3.5/4
3: Once Upon a Time in America - 4/4
2: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 4/4
1: Once Upon a Time in the West - 4/4
Absolutely agree.
As a huge fan of Leone's productions i' m 100% agree with you. You know very well the argument and have the correct passion.
Well I just learned that Two Mules for Sister Sara wasn't a Sergio Leone movie. I guess just because it stars Clint Eastwood and has an Ennio Morricone score doesn't automatically mean Sergio Leone.
Sergio Leone is his own sub genre to be honest
Truer words have never been spoken:)
I really wanted to like Once Upon a Time in America but I just couldn't. Maybe I should give it another try. There were some great parts it in still.
I've learnt over the years that unofficial remakes are somehow mostly good if not better. Like The thing, TLOTR trilogy, James Bond etc.
Sean isn’t a demolition expert he’s an IRA volunteer on the run.
My opinion is very unpolular. According to me Leone has ALWAYS improved himself. So my list "from worst to best" is perfectly equals to his filmography in cronological order:
7) Cholossus of Rhodes
6) A fistful of dollars
5) For a few dollars more
4) The Good the Bad & the Ugly
3) Once Upon a Time in the West
2) Duck You Sucker
1) Once Upon a Time in America
I really enjoyed this video. What a great way to show the fantastic work of Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone. "Once upon a time in America" is my favorite movie ever.
If you leave out the Colossus of Rhodes, I find it quite impossible to choose between the others. I often re-watch them and my choice simply depends on my mood.
Great video. One very small correction: the bad doesn't kill the entire family in the opening scene. He kills only the father and one of the sons. The lady of the house and the other little boy are spared.
Even more ruthless for the survivors, I would say...
Yes, and then he kills the guy who hired him. Each of the trio are introduced by killing three men a piece.
72% Agree word to word (esp No.1), 28% haven't seen the movies.
Colossus Of Rhodes was a great effort IMO.
Very nicely done. ❤️ Curious-what is your native language (your English is almost too precise-especially the "T"s! 😉). Thanks!
My native language is Hebrew:) I'm Israeli. But from ages 9-12 I lived in Boston. That's where my English is from.
My personal favorite will always be Once Upon a Time in America. Masterpiece through and through
I just subscribed to your channel, and I just wanted to say that you are VERY, VERY good....and I agree with another commenter, You are be the best reviewer that I've ever watched and I've watched many before finding you, yesterday.
Are you making fun of me?!?! :DDD
Thank you so much!
If you like Sergio Leone style spaghetti westerns you should check out "My Name is Nobody".. Same vibe, great musical score and Henry Fonda is in it!
Me too. Once Upon A Time #1, Good, Bad and Ugly #2 and all the rest in any order you want.
Even his worst film is still pretty damn good. The six remaining are some of the best FILMS ever, in my opinion. Great stuff
Good video man! Sergio Leone is my favourite of all time. Little bit gutted about Once Upon Time in America being 4th... cant blame you tho
Thank you:)
I can definitely understand people who rank America higher... Such a great film.
You’ve missed one !? which he produced & directed a few scenes & I think is the most underrated film ever “ My name is Nobody “ it’s the most gorgeous film with a brilliant Morricone soundtrack
He didn´t direct My Name is Nobody, he just wrote it. Tonino Valerii did.
@@MrCarpen7er he directed a couple of scenes?
This film is on you tube and you can clearly see which scenes Leone directed himself. Watch the scene where a dog gets up and walks across the road. Genius and totally Leone. It's a great film and highly recommended. Also one of Morricone's most under rated scores.
@@ericcoyle3520 and the guy having the piss in the station , it’s a great movie
5:10 When I was a kid I thought that Westerns were boring but Sergio Leone is the reason I like Westerns today.
western classification:
1. Leone's westerns
2. other westerns
the good, the bad and the ugly, I agree with everything you said, I stopped counting how many times I've watched it, even though the movie lasts almost three hours, when it's over you wonder "is it over yet?"
A Fistfull of Dollars is my personal favorite of Sergio Leone and my favorite movie of all time. Sergio Leone did an amazing job to it.
just spotted what looks like a industrial pig farm or similar in the back ground @ 11.22.🐽 no worries love the films anyway, probably swap one and two round.
I film di SergioLeone sono indimenticabili li ruvedi sempre con grandentusiasmo
It's almost like A Fistful of Dollars was an art study for Sergio Leone's other Westerns.
And it's great in its own right!
@@IaMD.B. Most certainly - many Art Studies from great artists are great in the own right. My only point was that he perfected many of the ideas from A Fistful of Dollars in his later movies,
For A Few Dollars More is my number 1 choice but to each his own. one thing you can't deny is they're all great movies!
Oh from the Western Movies I like the most where Clint Eastwood is in there ;)
TGBU is a perfect movie, every shot , everything, yes a masterpiece 👏 ❤ beautiful
totally agree with you ! The good bad ugly with Tuco's acting and Clints good looks and Van cleefe's evil was the epic of all masterpieces !!!
You forget Ennio Morricone's background score
@@sugavanesh3776 Yes, I'm sorry, you are totally right !
this was solid good job
Thank you:)
I like "Once Upon a Time in the West" best for all the reasons stated in this video.
I was just going through a Leone binge.
5. Fistful of Dollars
4. Duck you Sucker!
3. For a Few Dollars More
2. Once upon a Time in America
1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
His other movies aren't free on RUclips right now 😭 But I'm grateful they uploaded those 5 incredible films for free
I also suggest My Name is Nobody - the film co-directed and co-written also by Leone. It's the kind of movie where Leone parodied everything up to that point.
I have to say... I totally agree with you!
This list is so unfathomably based
…aka almost the same as mine
U & me have the same taste of movies!
GBU Might be the greatest movie of all time. The kind of movie you hear people talking about how cool and awesome it is and when you watch it is even better
Also If Chris Evans shoots a Kid in the face today (in a movie) not even that would be on par with Henry Fonda killing a child in OUTW, that was a heel turn for the ages.
Can't argue the top 3
What’s the name of the intro song?
I think it's called "A Fistful of Spaghetti"
@@IaMD.B. thanks from the heart
Fistfull of dynamite is my favorite ❤
Ounce upon a time in the West took me twenty years to appreciate it's beautiful on so many levels
6:57 good job putting story SPOILERS and ruining one of the best moments in the movie
It's a 50+ year old film, and there are plenty of other great moments in it. I didn't ruin it.
1. The Good, the bad and the ugly
2. For a few dollars more
3. Once upon a time in America
4. A Fistful of dollars
5. Once upon a time in the west (in Sweden: ”Harmonica”)
6. Duck you sucker
7. The Colossus of Rhodes
I always thouhht Steiger was influenced by Eli.Wallace's Tuco If your gonna copy ...copy from the best
Faltou incluir o outro "épico" de Leone...
Em que lugar ficaria Os últimos dias de Pompéia?
One big mistake: People in Italy KNOW he actually directed "My NAme is Nobody" , not Tonino Valerii.
Leone was NOT just a Producer/ Writer on the film
My only quibble with Duck, You Sucker is that it lacks the memorable villains that his other westerns have.
amazing video.
Thank you!
Sean is the Irish version of John.
Leone stands out because of Leone we got to see many Italian westerns 👍 including the dollar movies thanks for the memories 🏜️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
this is really great! and i don't know how i never realized before i saw the clip from 'for a few dollars more' but the hunchback is klaus kinski. if you're not familiar with his work, check him out!
I am familiar with him. Aguirre, The Wrath of God was excellent!
#1. Once Upon a Time in the West.
All of his others are in a tie for 2nd!!!!!
