Great instructional video...now I can do the work without a lot of head scratching...thanks again you answered questions I didn' t know that I had...who knew?...haha thanks
I watched a lot of these videos learning how to fix my backyard flooding problems into my basement and theres always different opinions like using fabric to cover the top of the rocks to stop them from getting clogged and not suing it to get better water flow. I would go with covering the rocks with the fabric because it makes the derbry keep out even if it slows the flow at least it will always long term work.
Your videos are excellent and taught me enough to install an open french drain in my front yard all by myself. I've watched so many of your videos over and over to make sure I understood the right way to install. I ordered your drainage fabric to 'burrito wrap' my pipe. Although it was hard work I'm pleased with the result and it keeps the water away from the front of my house. Thank you for your detailed videos, I'll keep watching!! Janet
Yes, This is a very helpful video. I live in Puerto Rico and I am placing a french drain along the outside of my home. As you know here in PR we have large storms. The previous owner attempted to place a french drain. He didn’t use the mesh fabric or the perforated piping. As a result it doesn’t work. It is only a mess. He dug the trenches and added round rock only. Thank you for informing me now I will go back and finish this terrible job.
Hands down that high octane is the best pipe on the market. I built my system following the principles on this channel. Robert is correct on his core principles of not contaminating the pipe by using high quality non woven geo fabric wrapped stone. I tend to shy away from pop up emitters although they do have a place where you have tons of fall and positive pressure. You cannot put the french drain in dirt or in a cheap fabric sold at big box stores. You need some commercial grade geo fabric to buid a system that lasts. The main things you will need to go by: 1) High OCTANE PIPE ( only available on this channel, other market products are not comparable due to the GPM rating of high octane) 2) High Quality Punched Non woven Geo Fabric with pins( in french drain store or elsewhere do your homework it is a commercial product) 3) Washed River rock, where available.(peanut pipe is not really equivelent in crush rating longevity or performance) 4) French drainman store has some catch Basins, downspouts and adapters. HOWEVER good quality basins and adapters are sold at most retail stores, ADS and NDS make these products, others are available online. You just need the right one for the right application and know how to keep the basins weed wacked and occasionally clean. Also install them at the correct elevation and with appropriate risers.
The high octane pipe is the Lamborghini of pipe. However, the recycled pipe, aka a decent Chevrolet, used properly and not pushed too hard, will give you years of reliable service. It is far cheaper and safer for the environment to use recycled product, because it takes a fraction of the energy to produce recycled plastic as it does to create new plastic. (Same goes for aluminum). If your grading is correct, you use proper installation techniques, and maintain your system (mostly by cleaning things out when needed) you should be OK. That is my anecdote, from a guy with a small house, some great fall on one side, and some sunken areas around the house that needed a french drain, and not a lot of money or help to do it.
I bet the stone on top does a great job slowing down and absorbing any fast moving surface runoff (vs grass). I like this setup, and am thinking about setting something like this up around my pool after it is built.
I’m designing one to go around my house, a mix of open French drain and downspout system. Two pipes in the trench. We are a crawlspace house. I’m curious about depth of the trench. I know you’ve talked about not going too deep to catch the water earlier. Great videos, thank you!
You won’t have to go that deep. If you’re on a crawl, just dig down to the footing. Basically, the wall is sitting on a footing. You want your pipe next to the footing, not on top of it.
Question: I had excess pond liner so I used that with big rocks around the edges. It worked good for flow for 1 year but it looks ugly. Would it still drain ok if I added the Cloth and rock "Burrito style" and skipped using any pipes? Thanks.
By wrapping the open French drain, you have the option of using a more expensive decorative rock on top of the wrap without having to pay to fill the whole trench with the good stuff.
Are any of your techniques adaptable to nearly flat land where annual rainfall is 5'+ and trees are necessary to shade the homes from blistering summer sun ?
Thank you for this! Very helpful. Would you ever do an open French drain against/around the foundation? Or does the dirt help support the foundation's integrity?
Question regarding Open French Drain and Roof Runoff Drain systems. At 7:57, I see your Roof run-off Pop-up emitter daylights to your Open French Drain. Is this some kind of exception due to the Open French drain already being wrapped in fabric??
I have an aframe house with a 60 degree roof, im using standing seam metal roof and a large metal drip edge on the sides. Water flows loke crazy when it rains. Gutters aren't really an option for me so im thinking an open french drain system like this along ghe edges will work well, i have plenty of slope to diverg the water away. You think this open drain system would work in my scenario?
Yes - once you're past the perforated pipe into solid pipe you can combine them. Only problem might be overloading the capacity of a single 4 inch pipe depending on the volume of water from the combined french drain and downspouts, then water is backing up.
Question: I'm thinking of doing the reverse of what's being done in this video. I'm thinking of creating an open French drain and tying it into an existing buried downspout drain. The downspout drains are high velocity, and the French drain would be low velocity. Apart from connecting with a Y connector, is there any other consideration? Seems to me it should be OK to tie the French drain into the downspout drain because the roof shingles and other particles will remain in the closed drain, never crossing over into the perforated drain.
Great video! I going to do all of this in my new place in France ironically. Do they call is a French drain? My question: are “pop-ups” to take in water or to let it escape? Thanks!
I may have missed it but how DEEP are the trenches that you used for this video and how wide is the trench to properly accommodate two of your perforated drain pipes side by side! Thanks!

I have a big twin 6 inch system 190 feet long I am putting in. I used leftover small river rock to fill it, I have used it all up. My question is, can I use the leftover ( from a pool install) sand to put over the geo fabric instead of the thick clay I dug out. I know it will let water through better, but will it cause problems? This runs along the side of my woods to catch water coming from a neighbors pond that overflows to ny property. Close to 30 acres of runoff water. Thanks for any tips.
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN Maybe I was not clear, my apologies. I understand the application you've installed here but I'm asking if I could install perforated in the affected area of concern and attach solid for the rest of the way to daylight away from the house. In your selected video, it seems ALL of the perforated installed has been done in an area where addition drainage is actually needed. I have a drainage issue on only one side of my house but I need to daylight all the way to the other side. While the installation effort between perforated and solid is close to identical, the expense and the function of the two are a little different. Intuition would suggest excessive, installed perforated line would run the risk of: 1) catching and removing trickling surface water from an area that is non affected with a drainage issue. And 2.) the non-required perforated line runs a small risk of clogging up with particulate in from an area that currently drains surface water just fine. Thanks for you videos and your sharing your expertise.👍
My question is if you expect the soil to clog the holes in the drainage rock, why would it not also clog the pores of the fabric? Not sure this makes sense to me… Any filter medium in any filter application will eventually need to be replaced or otherwise slow down/hinder the flow of water.
Putting in a drain on the property line between two houses - one run of high octane and one run of solid in the same trench. Can I use a y-pipe to join these together before the pop up? I don't have much room in the front yard for multiple pop ups.
What about having fall for the pipe? Don't you need a little fall, so the water can drain away, otherwise won't it just sit there in the pipe, and pool up? Thx
Hi, I had a inground pool put in an a paver patio, we had a open dripping overflow pipe outside on back of house, I. Asked patio guy how we handle . He extended the 3/4 inch pipe down under the patio an ran it out on to the grass. Which the water is coming out of but later in another person told us that it’s going to get clogged up an over flow our air conditioner pan into our home an build mold. How can we fix this?
Would this work well in clay soil? It seems there is an argument for not using fabric in clay soil because over time it clogs up but would appreciate your opinion. My gut tells me to use non-woven Geotex but I'm not 100% sure.
Guessing you can run open French drain perforated pipe then tie into solid for long run to pop up. Can you do an Open French drain on slope or does it have to be like a dry creek style?
I'm working on my open french drain right now and I'm wondering, can I do a paver walkway with the crushed concrete (compacted with compactor) slag and pavers along side of my french drain? I feel like the tiny dust and debris from the concrete and slag would be bad for the french drain but I thought I'd ask. Thank you!
Soil, not Dirt! Reason I know, I was corrected years ago by a soil scientist for calling soil dirt. Passing on the knowledge, not criticism. Your videos are well done.
Would it be ok to do an open French drain like this in a driveway where gravel meets concrete? Using large round stones inside the fabric and then #57 limestone above the fabric that matches the rest of the driveway? Thanks!
I have heavy clay soil and my side yards always pool water even though the “grade” is there for water to drain. The ground remains soggy for about 7 days after any rain because that area gets sunlight maybe half the day. Would a french drain help with fixing this? It’s soggy enough where if I walk on it, it’s mushy and i can see like moss growing on the soil where there’s no grass (probably due to being soggy so much).
Soggy ground means your water table is high enough than even a shallow French drain would help, especially with catch basins to collect surface water. Keep in mind that French drains in clay soil won't use a fabric wrap. The clay would clog the fabric. In Michigan -- where these videos are made -- they don't have clay soil.

I know your based out in north. What type sod is common there ? I live in Texas. We usually have warmed season based grasses. I typically install based on Soil and site conditions, and sunlight. These sod type and cultivars would be. Celebration Bermuda, Crown Zoysia and Zeon Zoysia.
With proper gutter guards in place I am still not seeing why you wouldn't have both the gutter lines and the French drain lines connected? Do you have video documentation of a previously installed French drain connected with a gutter line that has proper gutter guards in place showing a debris build up inside a French drain line to show your claims as to why this would not work? I would be very interested in watching that video to see what in fact built up as the debris.
Air pollution, Pollen, tree seeds, tree needles, shingle gravel You obviously never had gutter guards because they're not that efficient at keeping out all those things. Do it your way I know you've never walked in my boots. I'd wish you luck but that's not enough. Look at it this way, you can get it right the 2nd time you do it when you tear it out. ✌️
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN Asking for video documentation of the things your saying will go wrong further proving your not just stating your opinion but speaking from experience and providing proof of what your saying to be true wasn't meant to upset you but to clarify for others watching what your saying is actually true and not just a personal opinion your giving. I'm surprised at your reaction with such rude demeaner. You say if anyone has any questions feel free to ask and when someone does and this is how you choose to respond, wow.
The most obvious reason not to combine the systems is that the gutter system would add water to your yard through the slots/holes in the French drain pipe, thereby defeating the purpose of a French drain. Add gutter debris and you're asking for problems.
I live south of San Antonio Texas about 60 miles. Is there a company that you could recommend to me to fix my flooding problems? I have had a landscaper come and he was suppose to have re-scaled the yards and said that putting rock beds by the house would stop the flooding issues along with re-scaling the yards. But it made everything worse! He refuses to put in an open french drain next to the house. I paid this company $20,000.00 and yes, I got a nice looking yard, but now my house is getting flooded inside because of the water being contained next to the house. I have 3 downspouts that I wanted to go in underground pipes to the road but again, he refuses to do that.
Is a pop-up emitter a reasonable choice for the end of a french drain pipe (not the solid downspout pipe)? I'm unable to end the french drain to daylight and wondering if the french drain exit using a pop-up will work the same as using solid downspout pipes. Hoping to get this project started in Spring of next year using the slit pipe and the large popup emitter but unsure if the popup emitter can be used for the slit-pipe.
This is usually the make it or break it part of a French Drain. We like daylighting because it empties the entire line. If you have a break in the grade with more slope than yes. If where you put the pop-up emitter V2.0 it's lower then most the French Drain pipe it works just fine otherwise you have to put in a sump pump to lift the water to daylight. Watch my Outdoor sump pump 101 video ruclips.net/video/gN12GFchTcU/видео.html
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN Ok thanks, I'll try sinking the pop-up to a lower section so the top portion of the popup is the lowest section of the french drain. Gonna need to dig out a section of the front lawn to make it happen, but stupid rules here make it so I can't daylight it to the curb (even though all the water just ends up there anyways, so dumb).
I did this exact same system for my pool following your videos. Works perfect for 3 years now. Thanks for all the videos!

Air pollution, Pollen, tree seeds, tree needles, shingle gravel
You obviously never had gutter guards because they're not that efficient at keeping out all those things.
We have two contractors in Texas, but you are too far south. Best French Drain and Yard Drainage Contractor

P.S. Awesome vids and products. Not sure why nobody else doesn't have that turf restriction extension on the popup, seems so obvious to add it.
