  • Remembering noted poetess and freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu, #BornOnThisDay. Fondly known as ‘Nightingale of India’, she won literary acclaim for her collection of poems. Interestingly, she appeared in the Hindi version of the Tamil film Meera (1945) to introduce M.S. Subbulakshmi to the North Indian audience.

Thoss days english was mere a language and people used to learn it like other languages but now english is becoming more a matter of prestige for many Indian houses and in race of prestige and status symbol they dont learn english like a language but just to show off (its like carrying an iphone without knowing how to use it;eating in McD without knowing western table etiquettes; celebrating christmas and halloween without knowing the anything about the purpose behind the celebration). If one listens to Honbl Indira Gandhi, Pt. Nehru, sarojini naidu, one will find how flawless and correct english they used to speak. Those days people were more rooted to their own culture which made them so talented that they were able to master anything and influence a large number of people.

Sarojini Naidu was so noted for her eloquence that she was called the “Nightingale of India”. She gave a talk titled “Ideals of Islam”, in Madras, 1917.
She was quoted as saying, “It was the first religion that preached and practiced democracy; for, in the mosque, when the call for prayer is sounded and worshippers are gathered together, the democracy of Islam is embodied five times a day when the peasant and king kneel side by side and proclaim, ‘God Alone is Great’” She continued, “I have been struck over and over again by this indivisible unity of Islam that makes man instinctively a brother.”
