The real hero here is that young Black man who saw a major gap within the health care profession and actively sought to make meaningful and life saving change! Bravo!
She is a hero because you will never see white women in Hollywood interviewing people of colour and shinning a light in racial disparities in the medical profession. She is a TIME contributing editor and decided to interview the amazing young man. I think Angelina Jolie is a great person and woman and as a middle eastern person myself I think she deserves credit for how she uses her fame and privilege to speak about race inequalities

It is an issue everywhere. I am from the UK and while at University many years ago I was misdiagnosed as they thought a rash I had was something it wasn't. Things look different on our different skin colours. I am glad this is being talked about so we can all be re-education. Bravo young man and well done to AJ for speaking out.
Women in general get treated differently then men. I went in for a kidney stone at the same time as someone I knew he got pain meds and treatment. I was sent home and told to take otcs for my period pain. I got super sick.

African American women die either during or after childbirth at rate of 2 to 3 times higher the white women in the United States, as reported by the cdc. Most maternal death are preventable. That alone should give you reason to be concerned. Both African American men and women as well indigenous people are also dying at rate thats double white death rate from Covid19. One prominent black doctor Dr Susan More who died from covid19 shared her experiences with racism while sick with covid19 prior to her own death. One of Williams sisters nearly died after giving birth because her doctors wouldn't listen to her when she had blood clots. Black women and women in general are miss diagnosed far more often than men.

Right. I keep a black doctor, a black OB/GYN, a black pediatrician and a black dentist. I feel it's safer to deal with black professionals that can relate to me and my family and who would most likely be more caring and understanding of our issues.
Not only that but I feel we must invest financially inour own as well.
Honestly, this is where I feel Africa and African hospitals and doctors can make a contribution. There are African countries that don't have other races in the majority so local hospitals can make contributions. Africa rise up!

There is a lot of data and research studies coming from practitioners practicing in non-white majority countries - across Africa, the Caribbean, South American, India, the Middle East and Asia. The issue is if the information is being seriously considered and incorporated into North American and European teaching materials.

I love Angelina so much.Her equality towards all human being is so touching. If all of us could be like her this world would be such a wonderful place . The way how she takes care of all her children is so loving and caring. Zahara is going to be like her I know that.
I had knocked the fluids out of balance in my inner ear and cld not walk a straight line or maintain my balance for weeks. Felt the whole world spinning. I was told I was: (1) Faking it for attention (I was 28 at the time); (2) I was hiding a drug and/or alcohol problem; and (3) trying to get free prescriptions. Finally found a physician who immediately diagnosed the problem after listening to me for 2 minutes then watching me try to stand and walk. Still pisses me off when I think about it.
I feel so bad for you. The medicine of today is ridiculous and it has gone so far from where it should be due to medication issues, mainly oxycodone. Now when you have an issue, many doctors think that you are a drug seeker instead of caring for what you are saying. I am so sorry that you fell victim to such horrible medical doctors.
I had the same thing and it's the worst feeling in the world!!! Couldn't go to the bathroom with out literal rubbing every wall and the spinning makes you to nausea to eat. Gave me motion sickness meds but said it was a concussion.

This isn't "doing what they want". This isn't "being injured". Children aren't accidentally bumping into things during play time and needing invasive surgery. This is abuse and physical suffering. CPS needs to be investigating this household to see what Angelina is doing to these poor kids.

As a black man who has had quite a bit of keloids removals over the course of 20 years, The difference in understanding health issues by race isn't lost on me. this rings true to my experience. They've just recently discovered that keloids are like benign tumors that can grow rapidly, and removal with localized radiation can stop them from coming back. Removal without the radiation actually exacerbates the situation. Just a heads up. not advertising for a particular doctor. But hoping someone goes in more informed. Be your own health advocate.

I suffered for 3 years going to doctor to doctor. They told me it was all in my head, and that I just wanted pain medication. My friend lives in Atlanta and urged me to make an appointment with a black doctor. It took him 24 hour to diagnose me with Lupus, and Rheumatoid arthritis. My body was ridiculed in so much pain he gave me an injection.
This has nothing to do with race,if you come to Nigeria people go through this kind of thing a lot,my dad has a tumor,it took more than 5 doctors to diagnose no him with lymphoma and that was after multiple test, medicine is very complicated lots of mistakes happen.

This happened to me when I was talking to the doctor regarding my son, when he was sick, they asked me if my son's face turns red when he coughs and I told got confused and pointed out that my son is brown skinned, he isn't white, he wouldn't look red ,he would look pinkish when he is struggling with a choking cough. Turns out he had a really bad case of the flue and it's not Rona, thank God. But the fact that their way of making diagnosis and taking your symptoms serious is based on white people symptoms. It doesn't make sense when it comes to diagnosing a brown skin or darker skin person. The medical system needs a drastic change. A lot of racial discrimination happens in hospitals when it comes to diagnosis and care of coloured patients.
I truly feel she get so much hate from people. I feel she is a wonderful actress a open hearted women. I cant wait to see more of her movies.

While I'm sure this is a major issues in some places and with some people, as a former nurse, some of this is surprising to hear. I was trained how to specifically look for changes/issues in black patients as opposed to how to look for these same things in white patients.
Hi, can you give specifics? I am a Nurse as well and your statement seems very vague. I am curious to know what bias training you received that lead you to make that statement.

Certainly. :-) It's been many years since I left the field, but what I am remembering are things like when you're assessing for hematological signs, for example.. in a lighter-skinned patient, you might see a change in color of the skin such as pallor, jaundice, or a ruddy, flushed face. In a darker-skinned person, however, that may not be the case and so we were taught to check the conjunctiva, palms of the hands, and roof of the mouth. Another example, in the same assessment, you might be looking for petechiae. That might be harder to see on a darker-skinned patient also. So we were taught to check the palms of their hands and soles of their feet, since those areas are typically lighter in color. I could go on, but there really are so many things.. like even when evaluating for certain diseases that are more prevalent in black people than in other populations/ethnicities (I say black, because not all black people identify as African-American). Certain diseases might not usually be considered in a patient seeking help for certain subjective symptoms, but need to be considered in a black patient because of a higher prevalence of specific diseases/illnesses that occur in that population. Think of it like how when assessing a woman, of any race, color, ethnicity, etc, medical professionals didn't used to typically keep in the backs of their minds that their symptoms might be due to an MI, but we now know that women often report different symptoms than men, such as nausea, stomach discomfort, etc, rather than the classic crushing chest sort of feeling. I don't think there is an bias here. There is no presumption, just assessment, and differential diagnosis. I hope this helps.
