  • I learned how to paint like an artist DESPITE not having any skills or "natural abilities" to do so. And specifically, I'm learning how to paint in ONE WEEK. I have a goal of painting an abstract landscape painting using acrylics. I want to paint mountains and a valley and it needs to be cozy colours to match my bedroom decor. Learning how to paint was something I didn't think I'd ever be good at or even be capable of learning. But I was wrong. Sometimes we are told by others that we aren't very good and that can make us believe things from a young age. Maybe it was a teacher (in my instance my art teacher compared me to my older sister) who had a lasting impact. Or a parent. Or just lack of encouragement from a young age. But I've learned through this whole DIY journey that most things can be learned. Painting may come naturally to some, but for the rest of us, we can learn and acquire the skill and even get decently good. Happy painting!

I just went through this same journey. I was stressed about messing up but then told myself it’s just paint. Once I was able to let go of the fear, I engaged my emotion and the painting just became it’s own thing. I had to laugh when I was done. My goal was a serene landscape but my emotional side created a very stormy sea. Now I look at on my wall and am proud that I found a way to express myself

Yep, my needlework teacher at school told me not to bother choosing needlework as a subject as I was no good at it. I didn’t do any needlework for many years because of what she said to me but later on in life I taught myself sewing and now I design and sew mohair teddy bears as a hobby and make their little clothes. I also make life-like miniature animals with needle felting. Some teachers do not realise how a throw away comment can affect a child so negatively. Who knows, I could have trained as a seamstress and been really good at it but I didn’t because I listened to an ignorant teacher. Your painting is beautiful Dalia and I can’t wait to see it framed and on your bedroom wall.

Da!ia, I really like your painting. I, too, am a creative person, and I painted several pieces for one of my grandchildren for last Christmas, and another person whom I dearly love kind of snickered at it (later found out they were looking at it from a different angle) which hurt me so badly I have not picked up a brush in almost a year. Your story, which resonated with me greatly, has finally given me the courage to paint again. THANK YOU for sharing.😍

Very pretty painting. Painting is more of a learned skill and not a "natural talent" kind of thing. If you can learn how to buid something, you can learn how to paint. As far as the canvas goes, it isn't painted white with white paint. It's called Gesso. You can buy a roll of canvas for painting and prep it yourself after stretching it onto a frame. You can buy the frames in many different sizes. Be careful with how much water you add to acrylic paint. If you add to much you will have an adhesion issue and the paint will flake off of your canvas in time. The pigments will also separate, which is what you are seeing when it's drying. Acrylic paint isn't meant to be watered down so much. If you really want a to find a happy medium I would suggest using gauche paint. If you want to practice painting with acrylics I would use paper specifically for acrylic paint and not watercolor. The reason is that if you are planning to use the acrylics on canvas, your paint won't turn out the same as it did in the watercolor paper, especially if you're wetting it down. Watercolor paper will absorb the moisture and a canvas won't. Wetting on watercolor and then painting is called wet on wet. It then absorbs and dries. On a canvas it will just sit on the canvas or run.
