Thank you for this video Dalia! Had this on my watchlist since it came out and finally watched it! I’ve been following you for your DIY content for years, so this revelation was a welcome surprise. From the looks of it, you have many followers who are also Muslim and now feel connected to you on another level. I can definitely relate to a lot of what you mentioned in your upbringing. I also have mixed ethnicity parents so Islam was my core values growing up, rather than any one specific culture - I think it makes us look at the world much differently ☺️ I’m so happy you put this video out. One of my friends is also "mixed", her parents are from very different ethnicities and cultures and she felt like she never belonged to any culture at all. She was never "indian enough" or "irish enough" and she felt like she was disappointing people all the time. Now that we've grown up she's learnt that she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone, that we love her just as she is. Sending you so much love, thanks for sharing your story.
I just watched your video. Your religion is your business. Whether you talk about it is also your business. As a fan of yours I enjoy the DIY content and never thought about your background. I don't have a negative view of Islam. I want to believe that thinking people can differentiate between extremism and majority of the faithful. You have carried yourself with dignity and honesty. I just want to thank you for giving me another part of you life story. I’m a catholic so I don’t know anything about muslins, but I talk to a lot of different people from different religions, cultures and races. Everyone is unique and I enjoy learning about them. At the end of the day we’re all after the peacefulness and love that we feel from God, religion or our faith. Many blessings to you and may you always find the peace you need. Still following along 😊
So much unneeded judgement in the world today! It took a lot of courage to make this video. I have watched your videos for years with the first one when you did the white cube board & batten in the Toronto (?) condo. I didn’t look at you any different then than now because of what your spiritual path may or may not be. We all have our own. I was so impressed with finding another amazing woman on RUclips knocking it out of the park with minimal power tools and great ideas to inspire me. Thank you for being you. Your a beautiful soul.

I can relate to your story. I am born Muslim but I was not wearing hijab or abaya untill I finished my bachelor's degree and came to a Muslim country for a masters degree. One of my classmate was surprised to know that I am Muslim, one even asked me how it felt after praying in a mosque. I felt judged but may be it's me who was taking things in a wrong way. I would want people to be more kind and not be so rude or harsh. I mean you want to be the best Muslim not just by appearance but also with your behavior. I have friends who are so kind and humble, who inspired me to be more religious. I always thought of wearing hijab when I was small but it took time because of the culture and people around me. One day I woke up and thought of wearing it and since then Alhamdulillah I feel so comfortable with it. I always loved dressing up modestly and hated it people would stare at me with wrong intensions. Alhamdulillah, Allah showed me the right path. I also started reading Quran with meaning and Tafsir (the explanation) before attempting to wear hijab. It makes so easy to understand Islam. Islam is not hard but people make it hard.
Asalamwalkium sis! Thank you so much for this video! I'm glad you're okay with being visibly Muslim, especially on RUclips. It's so important for people to understand that Islam isn't a monolith and there are so many ways of just BEING MUSLIM, all as valid as the next so long as you're keep the shahada in your heart. I relate to you about not having a lot of Muslim friends, especially when you're parter of an older community that had to assimilate more then the larger immigrant communities that grew in the early 2000's vs the 80's and 90's. I recommend the Islamic Center at NYU's videos and online content for access to a community that is beyond being "arab/desi" culture centers, but actually focused on the peace, fairness, humanity, and love that is the basis of Islam.

I have followed you for a long time and to be honest when I saw your husband in your vids I got a feeling he was muslim but I wasn’t so sure about you. I thought you were hispanic which I belive you get I lot, i do too eventhough it’s not my background. And so when this video popped up I was so chocked but also relived and very happy since I now can call you a sister. You are so likeable and eventhough we do not know eachother, i can tell your heart is kind. Also now I can kind of understand why you went though depression or atleast a huge reason for it , because of low imaan and the soul wanting to return to the remembrance of Allah. We all have been there and the cure is in the remembrance and practising our faith. Not everyone gets that invitation to practice the religion from Allah so if you feel that sense of depression when your iman is low, it really is a blessing. And remember only in the remembrance of Allah do the the hearts find rest. I really hope your mental health is better and again so happy now to call you my sis in islaam. 💕

Dalia I grew up as a Christian. I am currently 35 years old. I met a lovely coworker who is Muslim. She began telling me about her religion, and I started to wonder about mine. They are a lot alike. I am so curious about all the religions and I just wanna figure out what I believe. I believe in God, I believe that he sacrificed his son For us. I am very interested about Muhammad. My coworker told me that he was a profit and I love how the Quran dives more into gods life not just Jesus’. I tried to research the English version of the Quran. I would love to hear more about this from you, if you have any reputable sources. Even here on RUclips. Thanks for being so open minded and understanding. Love your channel.
Hi Kimberly! Thanks so much for sharing that and I agree they definitely are alike! It’s cool that you want to learn more :). For general understanding it never hurts to read the Quran (even like Quran.com). There’s something called tafsir that you can click on (on the site it’s the little book icon on the left of each verse) that gives more context of each verse. For easier general understanding, there are a few videos I’ve loved by Jeffrey Lang (there’s one called “the purpose of life - Jeffrey Lang” that I really liked). Also on RUclips, the talks from Nouman Ali Khan have really helped my understanding. Hope that helps!

Thank you for sharing this! ❤ As an atheist living in Northern Europe, I can't relate to the experiences you describe. However, I've met many people with different religions and there is so much wisdom and love that we can share between each other if we look at who we are as individuals and don't get stuck in harmful stereotypes.
Some people are only exposed to the extremist side of Islam in the media. There is a lot of Christian representation which helps people discern that not every Christian person is living a "cult" kind of lifestyle, though there are extreme Christians living like this. Representation matters and you sharing your experience and interpretation of Islam is helping address that lack of representation!

As-Salaamu Alayki Thanks for sharing your story! I converted to Islam maybe almost 8 years ago. I remember when I first converted to Islam, I was told Islam is perfect, people aren’t. Such a beautiful peaceful kind religion and I’m so grateful that I was guided.

Thankyou for sharing , isn’t it sad that people are quick to judge based on bad things they have been told about religions . I find religion very interesting.. and that the basics of every religion is as you said being the best person you can be , respect , kindness etc. I hope one day society will choose to learn more about things before they make judgement. 😊

So well said, Delia. The world is gray, not black and white. Too many people, especially here in the US, don't try to go deeper and see beyond stereotype. They are too afraid (many displaying this as anger). If kids of all religions, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, etc., were encouraged to interact positively with each other enough they would see the good in each other. Perhaps paired up to work on projects together. They can break their elders’ negative cycle. My firm belief is to not allow differences, especially religion and politics, to get in the way of a good friendship.
Since day one, i felt that you have some Egyptian roots and i was really curious about it, when you said it I was happy I don't know why😅 happy you are proud of what you are because it's worth it ❤❤ wish you all the best

In my opinion, when people ask questions like "What makes you a member of any religion," they are measuring their idea of what persons from that faith are like. I'm non-religious in a very Christian country and I have to choose my response very carefully. That being said, what matters most is what is in the heart of the person, how do they treat themselves and others.

I just watched your video regarding having kids and saw that you had comments turned off, but I’m not going to let that stop me from congratulating you for making conscious and informed decisions. Too many people stroll absentmindedly through their child bearing years, often bearing children as an extension of themselves rather than mindfully considering what they may have to offer a child. It seems to me that you are much more mature and wise than I was at a similar age. I just had to say that.
Thank you Kim for going out of your way to share your perspective. I can tell you understand where I’m coming from and that means a lot to me. You described it so accurately re: many people viewing children as an extension as themselves vs what they have to offer a child. Oddly, the majority of people I know view it this way and have a hard time understanding my perspective (and somewhat just disagree with it). It’s nice to know that I’m not alone in this way of thinking. ❤️
I wish people would quit trying to differentiate themselves from others & obsessing over ther differences! We are ALL different from each other in soooo many ways. And we ALL, at times, feel judged by what we look like, act, believe, etc. Just have confidence in being you & those who matter will want to be around you!
We are all different, I agree! I think if you got to the end you’d see that part of this video was peeling back the onion so that I feel comfortable showing up authentically in an area that has partially been concealed as a function of nurture or nature. Sure for some people they might not need that. But for me, I’ve been creating videos for like 10 years and sometimes these steps are 100% needed. You might not relate. But for me and others it’s a healthy and productive step :)
I would've never guessed you were Sudanese. I thought your dad was South Asian or something. But I've seen some Sudanese people so I don't doubt it.

God created us in his image…man and woman he created as a connection with our creator. Religion can uplift some people to surpass God’s purpose of love and some can turn to be judgmental and hateful and respect is no longer honored, because some accept their own focus and beliefs and may misinterpreted wrongly God’s true purpose for mankind. We are one in God and each faith should be honored and respected…Love is our connection with God. Dalia, may God be with you…love peace🕊

You seem like a truly beautiful soul. I’ve never understood the narrative of Muslim “extremism”. As an American I generally hear it from Christian or conservative media/people and it’s just fear mongering unfortunately. Ironically Christian extremism is VERY real and can be documented throughout history but 🤷🏽♀️. For myself having grown up in the South (SC) in and around very conservative Christian society, I found myself wondering why I needed to claim a specific religion to “be a good person”. I strive to treat others with the same dignity, respect, courtesy and compassion I would like to be treated with daily and I’ve continued to do so without religion. I do think religion offers a sense of community with the gathering of likeminded people, I can appreciate that aspect but in general I try to respect the beliefs of others (as long as their belief does not harm others) and when invited to learn from their religion but I don’t feel the need to commit to a religion at this time. 💜

My mom is Muslim. She converted after a long time (maybe when I was 10 or so). She was always supportive of us being raised with Muslim teachings but definitely it was my dad who taught us the most about Islam. However, I’d say the most impactful part of my journey was as an adult, when I tried to learn on my own. 💞

Thank you for sharing for your story. I was born in the Catholic faith. And i believe their is a God. We all have different beliefs in any religion. I don't particularly care about a person and what their beliefs are. It's none of my business. As long as the person is kind and loving and is overall a great person. That's all I care about. So basically I'm saying I like a person what is the inside not the outside. I say let people be who they are. And you look like you have a beautiful heart. And you're very talented at what you do. Be true to yourself and don't let nobody get you down.

Salamu alaykum sister. May I ask why do you want to be Muslim at all with such an individual understanding of it? I mean why somebody should follow any religion if he doesn't want to practice it like it's meant to be? Did you ever tried to understand what exactly makes somebody a Muslim before "accepting" Islam to be your religion? I think in todays world it's a very hard situation because people are spoiled by secularism and liberal ideas. Islam means submitting to the creators rules and fully regulate your life to Him. It can not be anything else than lack of belief if somebody is not practicing the core parts of Islam. Definitely it's about lack of belief, not lack of knowledge about the belief but lack of understanding the belief and the consequences. I sincerely advise you to question the islamic belief and look for it's proof, which will satisfy your mind rationally and fill your heart with calamity and strong belief which will lead you to practicing Islam. Thanks to Allah we have evidence for the correctness of our Deen. Last thing: This judging issue is just bullshit, who tells us that we should not advise each other? Islam doesn't tell us like this. Islam teaches us to take care about each other because we know this life is very short and in the end we will meet our creator. Salam from Germany
Salam. Respectfully, everybody is on their own journey. You take a step forward and Allah takes a step back towards you. Islam is a religion based on individual faith so I’m confused by your comment. I will not force anything that isn’t motivated from my heart. One can certainly believe something without following it perfectly. I believe exercise is healthy but might not go to the gym. I believed I should pray before I started praying. I believed I shouldn’t drink while still drinking. I believed in zakat before I started donating. I grew up around an unimaginable amount of Islamic teachings. And to me they always made sense, regardless of my actions. And with my high functioning adult brain they continued to make sense. And this is why I know I’m Muslim. I’m thankful for the progress Allah has made possible for me as he knows what is in my heart and will judge me accordingly. What you don’t realize is comments like the one you’ve made send people away from faith. ESPECIALLY for people who are raised in non-Muslim countries. Although presumably your comment and way of thinking is well intentioned, it has serious adverse impacts. Islamic faith starts from the heart. It starts from belief before it translates to action. If you portray that one needs to practice all before considering themselves Muslim that’s false. If I viewed it this way I’d never have gotten to praying 5x a day. I remember making du’ah for years to give me the motivation to pray. When I finally accomplished 1 prayer a day it was like a miracle. I’m miles away from where I started. All from the heart by the grace and blessings of God. There’s a reason the Quran was revealed over time. People need time. An open heart is everything.
When it comes to religion I stopped believing . I find that this has allowed me to see people and their actions as a decision they make on their own accord. I am not picking sides in the Isreal palestinian conflict. Both sides have been killing each others children for way too long. If one stops and the other does not they will never resolve this. Both must stop the hate and learn to live beside each other .
I'm kind of struggling with this video. I didn't need to know your race/ethnicity/religion. I appreciated your creativity, teaching, and focus. I almost NEVER have to "reveal" my race/ethnicity/religion at work, so I'm wondering why you are feeling guilty about not making it central to a DIY channel? I also think your perspective might be boxed in...I also belong to a "tribe" that is religious, ethnic, racial, and controversial. I don't get why there is so much hatred around my tribe, but I intellectually understand what arguments people proffer to support their distrust or hatred. For that reason, it seems odd to me that you don't understand people's confusion. Maybe the way to answer is more like: "You might be confusing religious practice with religious belief. Catholics ID as Catholic even when they don't go to confession or mass, right? Jews ID as Jews even when they don't Aliyah, right? A Mormon might drink Coke, and I'm still Muslim even if I x." The loudest voices in Islam ARE EXTREME and their rule is legalistically strict. I think what you are saying is that THAT version of Islam is not in line with the religion you love. However, it shouldn't be confusing that those outside the faith are then confused when they see a more progressive Islam.
If you were to know me in real life, you'd see that DIY/design is 1% of my being. I worked in corporate for years and the qualities that you see and mentioned are also the things that were celebrated and rewarded. But those too are just a small part of who I am. I see it as a disservice to myself and my purpose in life to just do DIY videos. So I don't really view my channel as just a DIY channel per se anymore. However, I understand if that isn't what you're looking for or interested in. I think on this topic, religious faith is a fundamental factor in who I am. I view it as the most valued thing I have in life. And I don't see myself as a progressive Muslim, because I don't think there's such a thing as progressive Islam. I see it as important to speak on this topic as a loud voice that isn't extreme to counteract the other loud voices that are. I understand you didn't need to know my race or religion but to me I'd rather someone know exactly who they are watching instead of watching someone just because they deliver an interesting project.
Please start by reading the bible. You don’t have to just go with the religion that your parents have taught you. Read for yourself. Start with the Bible. It will tell you all you need to know to be saved ❤
Don’t trust your own goodness to save you on judgement day. None are good but God. Trust in the savior to lead you to eternal life.
Consider reading the quran yourself ❤
