Wow! I love the way he explained his attitude and responsibility to the human being who has placed his or her life in his hands. It shows a man willing to admit there is a gap between being over confident, but approach with caution and care.
I think it is necessary to "split" the issue between the "long drop and the short drop." The "long drop" as performed by expert hangman Albert Pierrepoint depended upon a torsion of the spinal cord at C4/5 resulting in immediate separation of the spinal cord into two parts. The torsion was caused by the knot of the noose "twisting" the neck to the point where the fracture occurred, and complete separation of the spine resulted. We never heard it, but I believe Pierrepoint actually HEARD the spine snap at the bottom of the fall. He could tell immediately if his goal was achieved. Unfortunately, nobody ever asked him. The "short drop" was used by less experienced executioners (or those who wanted asphyxiation to occur). The spine under those circumstances may not fracture. In this case, the person hanged would likely feel the enormous pressure of their weight against their neck, from the incredibly tight noose. This would have been exceedingly painful. But it would end after 20 seconds to 1.5 minutes, when unconsciousness occurred. The legs might "spasm", but the hanged person would not be aware of this. I believe it is likely that the long drop resulted in an immediate cessation of consciousness. I think the "light went out" immediately at the end of the drop. It was quite violent, but it is unlikely the hanged person experienced any pain. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA) Retired surgeon

Him admitting that he is for a certain degree afraid of surgery means he is a good doctor. There is no more dangerous person than one that believes he can't make mistakes.
Life can be incredibly challenging, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed at times, but every challenge you face is temporary, and there is always a way forward. The pain you might be feeling now does not define your future. Remember, you have unique strengths, and your life holds value, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Talking to someone you trust, seeking support, or even just taking one small step forward each day can make a huge difference. Life has ups and downs, but the beautiful moments, connections, and possibilities make the journey worth it. You matter, and your story isn’t over. There’s hope, even in the darkest times. You’re stronger than you think, and there’s always a way through.
When Joni Erickson-Tada broke her neck diving into the ocean, she spoke of being aware of her limbs flailing, and then feeling like she was wrapped in a fishing net. It seems when the brain loses sensory input from the limbs, it assumes the body is in the fetal position.
The people here are here because everything else has been discussed, thought about, and already played out the future. I already know my outcome. I already know my future. I already suffer. It's ending and preventing an outcome i can't live with. It's ending the suffering of remembering and reliving the cause of my outcome. It's sad. Truly sad for me. I am over trying to cope. Sometimes, things are worse than death.
I have spent a lifetime fixing things, not people. If I were a surgeon I think my greatest concern would be discovering that things are not as we thought and having to ad hoc modify the plan. The problem here is that the consequence of getting it wrong are dire. I have the deepest respect for people who can do that job.
The legs twitch because the motor neuron signals from the brain to the spinal cord are normally inhibitory. When that signal is severed the spinal cord motor neurons activate the limbs.
Albert Pierrepoint changed hanging by calculating a length of rope that would break the neck. Prior to that, it was pretty horrendous. Curiously, the term 'hangers on', a modern perjorative for the 'unwelcome friends' originally applied to actual friends or family of the subject being hanged, who would grab and 'hang on' to him, adding their weight in attempt to hasten the outcome, thereby reducing the horrific suffering.
I've seen people get hanged. It's unbelievably disturbing. There's two types, suspension and short drop. The most painful one is suspension where the rope constricts your airway only but does not also compress your carotid artery causing that feeling as when your underwater holding your breath and your basically out of oxygen causing your body to shoot upwards to surface in order to get oxygen You will that intense feeling for a few minutes and still be conscious that whole time. It's a feeling that you never want to experience. The compression of your airway causes your body to jerk as your brain does everything it can to obtain oxygen. The short drop(which was used on Saddam Hussein) breaks your neck and severs your spinal cord immediately and usually causes decapitation. DO NOT LOOK UP ANY VIDEO OF THESE THINGS BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER FORGET THEM.
@@gentlemanjim480 Morbid curiosity. The same reason people watch true crime videos on RUclips. I also wanted to see what I would be going through if I were ever in that position. To see how long I would have to suffer for. How long would it take for me to go unconscious. It's terrifying thinking of being in that position. I don't know if I'm good at explaining it or not.
@haloaflame8164 I think you said it the other way round. Long drop is what severs your spinal cord (Hangman's fracture) and is something that includes calculations regarding the length of the rope. Too long a rope can cause decapitation and too short a rope causes slow death by asphyxiation. What you described as suspension is actually the short drop method which can take many minutes for the death to occur and the condemned struggles a lot. For example, many executions of the WW2 war criminals after the Nuremberg trial were botched to cause a slow death. Many of these Nazis fell from the gallows with insufficient force to fracture their necks. For instance, Wilhelm Keitel who's convulsions lasted 24 minutes until he died.

The analogy with electricity is not correct. Doesn't mean he is wrong per se, but a better way might be that there's a closed circuit between the limbs and the spinal cord, which can cause the legs to twitch. There's another circuit between the brain and limbs, that suppresses the 1st circuit. When the brain-limb circuit is cut off, the cord-limb circuit can take over, causing the twitching. I'm maybe not saying it well 😅, but 🎉 don't want a long post
I always thought it was (more or less) due to blood flow to the brain being blocked off, and then secondarily the inability to breathe after you pass out. However, that presupposes that the person was not dropped from a significant height. I remember learning as a kid that some guy(like hundreds of years ago I believe) actually created a mathematical formula based on a person's weight, that determines the height(or range) that they can be dropped/hanged from that will reliably break their neck, but won't decapitate them.

Please, people, do not kill yourself. Hanging done by professionals who takes into account the person who is condemned to death by a court, his/ her weight, thickness of the neck ext, then they make a calculated decision to kill the person quickly as explained by the dr in this video. As a policeman of very near to 40 years experience, i know people have botched suicide deaths due to wrong calculations. They then died a horrible death, and at the post mortem, the death is documented as efixiantion, which is similar to strangulation. The neck is not broken. They suffocate. Horrible death. Not quick either.
That can happen when the neck is broken too. You just cannot see their struggle and suffering because the spinal cord is broken. The heart continues to pump blood even after the spinal cord is broken. It is just that you cannot breathe because the signals to your breathing muscles as cut. So it is still possible to you hang there "peacefully", but internally you are getting asphyxiated to death.
