- This version of the 1949 Alice was painstakingly edited together by my partner, Phantomwise. She deserves huge thanks for her efforts on this!
Eventually, Thunderbean Animation will be releasing a high-quality Blu-ray of this film, sourced from a 35mm print at the MoMA that also contains deleted scenes. However, even though preorders were opened last year, updates since then have been scant, and we have no idea when it might be released. We decided to put this together so that we have something better than the poor copies floating around in the meantime.
This version of the film has been put together from 3 sources, 2 of which I transferred from VHS tapes:
• 1992 Monterey Home Video VHS - This is the best quality copy of the English version of the film currently available, surpassing all DVD versions we've seen. It is the commonly-available 76-minute cut.
• 1990 Kids Klassics/GoodTimes Home Video VHS - This is a different 63-minute cut of the English version of the film. It contains the original titles, some shots missing from the common version, and also unfortunately adds a narrator to the Oxford scenes that was not originally there.
• French DVD - The French version is practically a different film, the live-action scenes even being directed by a different person, Marc Maurette. However, because the English version is missing so much, the French version has been used to fill in some scenes. It is also far better quality than any of the English sources.
Because we only discovered the Monterey tape late in the process, this version uses the Kids Klassics tape as its base, since it was the highest quality copy we had before that point. A later version might change this to use more of the better-quality Monterey material.

*I am the editor of this video (I'm uncomfortable with uploading on my channel in case Studiocanal wrongly strikes the English 1949 again). Please read the description for basic information on this video. This comment will include some information about editing choices, future drafts, and speculation on what's still missing. Feel free to ask questions.*
In editing this video, I had a mission to recreate the English version, and included the French to try and accomplish this. Anyway, that is why, though there may be better shots in the French, the English version was _almost_ always chosen. That said though, we may find out later that some stuff I included from the French was never included in the English (film research is always evolving like that). In some cases, there were even French bits that I felt subtracted, rather than added to, the final product so I left them out (like their end of the Rabbit-Hole).
_Why didn't you do more extensive editing?_
Simply put, time (and patience). I started off trying to compare shots between the two (wanting to put English audio over French shots), and thinking of sound editing. However, the project wasn't going anywhere with that level of perfectionism (and I had a time frame that I wanted to get this draft done while in quarantine, not knowing when I'd be back to work). Instead, I realized it needed to be a process. I started with examining/transcribing each source, having a transcript of everything needed, and then editing together. That alone took weeks! So, yeah, things can be better, but the way I see it, it's a first draft (and fortunately, the transcript will be a good foundation if I return to it). Anyway, feel free to ask why I edited things a certain way or suggest an improvement for next time (though no promises).
_What's in the future?_
I may do future drafts. For instance, the new Monterey source needs to be transcribed like the other two and a new final script including it where possible. Maybe do some basic sound editing. If I really feel like losing my sanity, I'd like to put English audio over French shots where applicable. Honestly though, (and I say this with love) I'm stick of looking at this movie for now and I hope the Thunderbean version comes out long before I'm up for a second or third draft.
_What's still missing?_
Oo boy, we still got *a lot* missing. Not only that, some of what we do have is not in the right place. For instance, I personally think the Caucus Race is out of order (I felt I did not have the right clips to put it back). I don't believe the Puppy or the second meeting with the Cheshire Cat are in the right places either, but don't have enough evidence to where they should go. Anyway, missing:
*almost goes without saying that all the parts that French is substituting in this edit are still missing in English.
*the end of the robe-dressing in the Dean's office
*we're missing the end of the animals chasing Alice before going into the Puppy scene (we get a little snippet of what was probably the last shot of this scene in the French. If you watch my video of the French slowed down around 38:57, you'll see the tip of Rabbit's ears as the camera pans up, transitioning from the blue sky of the Caucus Race set to the yellow sky of the forest. Additionally the audio may be from the missing scene, perhaps Alice distracted them with the carousel?) I only have half of this shot in the edit, because I had no place to put it without moving the Puppy.
*the end of the "You Are Old, Father William" dance
*much of the Mock Turtle sequence is _still_ missing. At the very least, I think Alice probably danced during the "will you, won't you?" part.
*We know that the Cook was a second witness, as evidenced by a screencap from when the Cook figure was on sale, probably from the Bunin's family's extended cut.
*there are actually many little chunks of scenes missing _everywhere_ . Don't be surprised if most of the extended footage ends up being these little chunks.
quick question. When you talked about the french ending of the rabbit hole, exactly what happened at the end of the scene? The rabbit hole is always my favorite part to see in adaptations so im just curious about what i’m missing out on lmao.
@@Cauti0nSeaman, hi! I'm glad you asked! I love talking about these sorts of things, but thought it'd be rambling to include it in the original comment. Anyway, the end of their rabbit-hole had a few more objects she passed by, like a map and a chair. You can watch it in my video of the French version here (ruclips.net/video/4jPbelf_-XM/видео.html). You may have previously noticed that the 1949 Rabbit-Hole has many close-ups shots of Alice. The reason is because Carol Marsh was swinging on a bungee cord, with objects being raised behind of and in front of her, to create the illusion of falling; at some point, the objects being raised behind her would show the bungee cord, so these bits were cut and covered with the close-ups. The French clips I didn't use clearly show the bungee cord in front of the objects, spoiling the effect. Essentially, they were outtakes left in!
Since they ruined the effect, I felt they subtracted rather than added. And, as a bonus, I didn't have to awkwardly force them in before the orange marmalade. Feel free to ask any more questions! I have some more observations about the differences between English and French if you're interested.

I can try to help though it appears to depend on _which_ 5 seconds. If it's from the French source, then the rights-holder is Studiocanal. However, they're only the rights-holder in France (or to the French version). We've never come across a rights-holder to the English version. I'm reluctant to say it's definitely public domain as we've been blindsided by new rights-holders coming out of nowhere before.
Anyway, if the seconds are in English, there is a restoration project-in-process by Thunderbean that will be commercially sold. www.thunderbeananimation.com/ Perhaps you can contact them. If in French, Studiocanal has been fair to us (besides from one misstep) though I'm uncertain if they'd allow it. If you're planning to upload on RUclips though, they will probably block the video in French-speaking countries, as they do to us.

I saw a version of this movie on broadcast TV when I was a child (1960s), and always remembered it,-especially the music and Alice's song. In fact, I was thinking about it just the other day. So good to see it again, even in its reconstructed form!
Carol Marsh was born for the role. They banned this across the pond, for it Satyr-isms on the dark Queen Vic. She was not amused. The revolution was pointless. Art first! :) This has been my favorite so far. Thanx for putting it together.

Finally, the version I remember seeing as a child in the early 60s at my grandmother's. Thank you for your hard work! I'd seen all the other earlier Alice films and they never seemed like to be the one I remember - Exciting to see this again after 60 years! lolol!

She also played Fan, Scrooge’s sister in the 1951 Alastair Sim version of A Christmas Carol.

Been wanting to see this version since I was a child when I caught the fish footmen segment on TV. Regrettably it will always flounder in the wake of the Disney effort but, very quirky and it captures the surreal atmosphere of the book. Respect due to Phantomwise for a valiant effort at reconstruction; even though half of it was in French!

Thank you SO much for this! I adore this version of Alice in Wonderland and have many fond memories of watching it on VHS as a child. It saddened me to learn of the sorry state it was in and how Disney unfairly forced it into obscurity. To be honest, learning of that has soured my feelings toward Disney's adaptation. Bunin's film is totally different and I appreciate its faithfulness to the book as well as its being (unlike its cinematic rival) true to the story's English origin. And I have to say, though I do agree that most of the puppets are grotesque, I find this Knave of Hearts adorable! :)
Hello MissTudorRose! I'm happy you've enjoyed this video. In regards to the Disney vs. Bunin battle, I've found some contemporary evidence that Bunin was not as innocent as many modern sources claim. Particularly, many retellings say the Bunin Alice's American release was delayed because of the lawsuit, when, in actuality, the lawsuit wasn't even filed until *after* they chose the same week as Disney's. I haven't finished my research, but I suspect that the delay may have actually been because of the original distributor (there was enough trouble that they made a statement about taking the distributor to court; unsure if they did). Anyway! Not saying Disney's innocent either. It's a complex story. I could go into more detail about what I currently know, but I haven't finished the research. I eventually mean to write a blog post at some point.
Hmm... that's interesting! From what you said it sounds like while the production timing was coincidence, the distributors didn't mind riding on Disney's coattails when the opportunity arose. I'd definitely be interested in reading your blog post about it when it's done. The whole history of Bunin's Alice is fascinating. Ironically, I would watch both the Bunin and Disney version alternately as a kid, of course with no idea of their one-time rivalry.
Trust me, Lou Bunin’s puppets aren’t as grotesque as the costumes and masks used for the Wonderland and Looking-Glassland characters in Paramount’s adaptation from 1933. They make the Lou Bunin puppets look cuter in comparison.
Not surprised much by anything Disney does, especially these days.

Hi, just wanted to thank the creators of this edit and the trouble they must have gone to. I had the GoodTimes video as a kid and even then knew it must be horribly edited. There was a character on the VHS box who didn't appear in the movie! It was really cool to see a more complete version.
I share some of the dismay that the Alice community isn't more interested in exploring adaptations, especially foreign adaptations. I'm heavily involved in the Oz community, which has a sometimes-awkward dichotomy of fans/collectors/academics that results in attention only being paid to adaptations that involve the original author (so, pre-1920) or have their own firm populist fanbase. That leaves out, of course, a lot of really interesting stuff, and in particular, foreign adaptations.
Dare I suggest there would probably be some real upshot to fans of various classic stories in adaptation joining forces to restore and document these lesser-known productions and keep them in the active conversation. :)

Oz was actually my favorite childhood story so though I'm not in the Oz community, it's close to my heart. I'm disappointed, but not at all surprised to learn that the Ozian community is similar to the Carrollian one in regards to adaptations. It's bizarre, because we know there is an interest, but it seems to be from outside the dedicated communities for the stories. I don't understand the disinterest in foreign adaptations either. It's not like the language barrier is a hindrance when you know the story!
Are you proposing an united effort? I hadn't considered it before, but thinking on it, most of the people I've met through Alice adaptations are interested in other classic-story adaptations as well. Sorry if it seems stalker-ish, but I looked up your name on Google; are you Sarah Crotzner from the International Wizard of Oz Club's Baum Bugle?

I saw the heavily edited version in the early 1960s on TV (Channel 11 New York City on Sunday mornings) definitely without the Oxford University scene orr French dialogue in it and of course in black and white. Didn't even know it was in color or it had that many songs in it for that matter. !

@@Cauti0nSeaman, Hi I'm sorry for the wait! I meant to reply forever ago, hope you can forgive the wait. I'm sure you can tell we're into adaptations of all kinds. My personal favorites are 1972, 1951, and Adventures in Wonderland. Though to be honest, I have a love for most of them, even the really terrible ones. Obscure ones are our jam! Actually, Curiouser and I met because of the 1931 Alice and now we're dating (lol). I also really enjoy foreign language ones, even without subtitles. Unfortunately, so many other Carrrollians are _not_ interested in foreign language ones (for instance, we were very disappointed that no one seemed to care when Curiouser uploaded Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie il Musical; which was become our new favorite "wtf" Alice).
Actually, a lot of Carrollians are not interested in adaptations in general, which is so bizarre to me. Like recently, Curiouser found out that a film archive had 1915 Looking-Glass. It'd cost thousands to transfer so we contacted the Lewis Carroll Societies for help (if not funding, at least a reassurance they'd post the crowfund campaign for their members). No response. They literally don't seem to care that film that's been missing for 90 years might be seen again. I'm stunned.

2:05 Opening scene, I believe is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame which began construction in the year 1163 AD and was completed in 1260 AD in Reims, France. This color version is absolutely interesting & entertaining. This 1949 rendition of Alice in Wonderland is one of the best to watch. Notre-Dame de Paris in the English language means "Our Lady of Paris". It is a beautiful cathedral, and so is the story/video. I highly recommend this video for all literature fans & architectural historical buildings fans. 🏰

I agree. I can’t understand most of them aside from the ones from the Wonderland storyline which are based on my guesses from the book since I know almost all the lines from there.
I know back in the 1940s they didn't have technology but this is really good!
They had plenty of technology. What they didn't have is advanced computer graphics technology.
For many of us, good old-fashioned stop-motion animation is some of the best technology!
It was better back in those days movies were much better back in those days all this computer hasn't helped I can't stand movies with computer stuff in them it's not the Golden age shut off TV or movies anymore much better technology back in those days they had talent back in those days much better acting much better technology I'm putting all this computer stuff in movies today has ruined films

Kudo's upon kudo's upon blessings!---Soooo much work had to have gone into this! Yikes! Thanks to phantomwise (and anyone else directly involved). I've been wanting to see some kind of improved, more complete version since I first learned of this film (from someone who worked on it) back in 1975. I wondered if I would ever see is at all, much less like this. (Btw, is there any possibility of a release of the French version, maybe with subtitles? If the quality is better overall than English language version, would that not be a good idea?) I remain astounded at the amount of work that was involved in making the original film---so many challenges---and extremely amazed that you've made the effort and put in the time to do all this painstaking reconstruction!
Funny, to me, that the Bunin family made a film like this, while I remember their very creepy, totally UN-charming early tv puppet show, PINHEAD AND FOODINI! Totally different thing for sure!
Has anyone uncovered the shooting script for either (or both) versions of ALICE? Or the count sheets, continuity script etc? I would think that some of that would still exist somewhere.

Wow! And I thought Blade Runner had so many different cuts and edits. But it’s nice to see Phantomwise putting in the effort to reconstruct the film to how it originally was or might have been before it was edited for both the French and English versions. Although I am a bit disappointed that the English version for the scenes in the French version have yet to be found so you’d had to insert the ones from the French version in with the ones from the English versions. It would have helped if Phantomwise added English subtitles to those scenes so those who don’t speak French could understand better what the characters were saying and follow the scenes more clearly in conjunction with the English ones. But hopefully, the English versions are found. But so far, this is the best reconstruction of a film with 2 versions with different edits and alternate scenes. I think the Caucus Race was for the French version while the Mouse’s lecture was for the English version. But I can see Phantomwise included both of them. As for where Phantomwise placed certain moments, I do think they’re different. Like for example, Alice’s second meeting with the Cheshire Cat in the hall of doors. I think that would actually be in the Mock Turtle sequence as when we see the Gryphon enter the room, there’s a shot of Alice sitting on the ground just like with the scene where she was in conversation with the Cheshire Cat. And also there seems to be a jump cut between when the Gryphon leads Alice through the door and when she’s in the hall before the Gryphon enters. That’s just based on my assumption. But still a great effort to restore what the original cut might have been.
Good work! I really can´t wait for the Thunderbean version thou. I kneed to know what scenes are missing.
Curiouser Archive, do you remember a version of Alice through the looking glass, I think from the sixties or early seventies, where Alice didn't step through the looking glass, she thought she saw something odd, and looking closer, she tumbled through the mirror. There was a charactor named Alec or Alex. I've watched the 66 version, and that was not the one I remember.

The 1915 silent version of Alice, posted on RUclips, is also a delight. Much of the original footage is lost, but there's an hour's worth intact and it's been wonderfully restored.
Used to watch this on WOR-TV Channel 9 in New York many years ago. It was butchered up badly for commercials. Finally saw it completely at the old Thalia Theatre in New York in the 1980's. Critics agree this version was superior to the Disney adaptation, but theatres owners in America would not show the British version.

(I don't know what has happened to them, BTW. They did run into a lot of serious technical trouble, they are a cottage industry and then there was covid. They have not returned my occasional inquiries into a when and where -- it's been 5 years since its original tentative release date ??????? ) Thanks so much for doing this!
Thanks, Gregory! I remember your comments on my upload on the French version. You're the only one I've talked to who seems to have seen the original (or closest-to-original) film so that's extremely high praise!
We do check Thunderbean's blog posts every few weeks, and my partner Sam has done the pre-order, but it's frustrating how little update or transparency there is. Would be much easier to wait if we knew exactly what the progress was and Steve seems unresponsive to inquiries. I do believe they'll get it done eventually and it's a case of too many irons in the fire. Though, if it continues on, I'll try to do improvements to my reconstruction over time.
@@Phantomwise2 I did the pre-order too and it is quite frustrating not to hear anything. I did read a commenter's statement that with Thunderbean you wait and wait and . . . WAIT . . . . and then . . . SURPRISE! it's arrived on your doorstep and it's been worth the wait. It is a labor of love on Steve's part, so I know it will get done and will be done correctly.
You untangled the door-in-the-tree sequences BEAUTIFULLY and they come very close to what my (apparently incredible) memory remembers. It brought it all back watching what you've done here. I watched Bunin's ALICE obsessively in my childhood as it was on the Million Dollar Movie and was repeated 5 or 6 times over a weekend in that format.
Bored of my 1st grade DICK & JANE books, I learned to read listening to Cyril Ritchard's MAGNIFICENT boxed set recording of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND while following along with the text of the included facsimile book. Once under my belt, I was home free with THROUGH THE LOOKING -GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE all by myself (Although, I listened to his fine recording of that as well, later AND the equally wonderful CAEDMON single record dramatic adaptations with Joan Greenwood and Stanley Holloway)
So like you, Alice is my marrow as well. I cleave to all things 'Alice' and always will.

@@gregoryblaska1586 I'm sure it'll be well-worth the wait regardless of how much longer it takes! I have seen clips of Thunderbean's other work which always looks astounding. I speculate part of the wait is because it's supposed to be a comprehensive set of Bunin's work and they're still tracking down material.
I'm glad to hear that I separated those sequences well. I knew Lobster Quadrille had to go back to its home with the Mock Turtle, but I wasn't sure whether the Cat really belonged there. Anyway, it was a fantastic project, and I felt it deepened my appreciation for the work on the film more. I hadn't realized just _how_ spliced up the film is, I could finally tell even little, tiny pieces were missing. I look forward to hopefully seeing those missing bits and seeing what I got right (or wrong) when Thunderbean is done!
That's amazing Alice helped you to learn reading! I first read Alice as a preteen so I'm a little envious of people who get to grow up with Alice as I imagine it must be a wonderful experience.

@@Phantomwise2 I got to completely sit down and totally watch this today. Here are some points I pick-up with a more-thorough watch
1) The opening and closing titles you used are quick tack-ons from the American release. PUNCH FILMS, Inc (as in "Punch & Judy"] was the distributor and Bunin appears to have provided a Punch-head on a stick logo in one of the vid copies I have. I'd wager that the French titles provided the originally intended styling for the English as well as they are more polished and professional in their late '40s-early '50s pink satin and pearl edged format. The "Eric Gill'-styled caligraphy in the french endtitles is typical of prestige British 'art cinema' of the period of which this was considered to be when not so shabbily reproduced as it has been. (Check out THE RED SHOES (1948), for one example of many) For clarity you made the right choice. (I have other Blue end titles on one of my vids which have been erroneously moved to the start titles.)
2) The cat on the door frame is in the right place with the first door in the tree scene. You guessed correctly! It's missing Alice's sliver of a responsive line of "If I only I walk long enough ..." which goes to black(NOT to the "bottom of the sea" statement and quadrille) which leads to the tracking to the cards painting the roses as you did. (It was probably too hard to splice that tiny one line bit)
3) I've never seen the caucus race carousel as complete in any of the 5 versions I have. WOW amazing!
4) I seem to remember a sung Mouse's Tail / Tale but have never found the scene footage
5) I also believe the Caucus Race animals jump up into their grid-work separate podiums TWICE while ranting and raving as that repeats on three of the 5 copies I've had.
I do think some of the views through the little door (as in the single shot of W. RABBIT checking the table of tarts) did arrive earlier as different from the continuity of the book. I remember, that even though the film is extremely faithful to the source, that there were some very slight continuity changes like that which "offended" my child's purist mind which knew every word and scene of the text ;). It's like they would introduce a visual theme which would be picked up and completed later. I seem to remember that even the painting the roses scene began earlier only to be finished and picked up later when Alice actually arrives in the garden itself.
You could (I'm sure) tell that there is still stuff missing. The Cook and the Duchess originally provided testimony at the trial. And there was more from The Knave, but none of that is anywhere to be found. And then there's a question of the Sparrow and Alice which actually came to mind from ONE SHOT in your reconstruction which sources from that scene and has been misplaced: a descent from the sky through the tops of the trees just before the first chase through the forest --- seeing that re- jogged my memory to its actual original existence.
Only the finished Thunderbean copy will tell us any of this for certain.
But these are all inconsequential nit-picking observations which are of no real importance to the overall whole.
You got it to nearly 92 minutes and 90 minutes is the officially stated complete length. I'm guessing it's around 105 minutes originally.
Again, I am in complete awe of what you did here! Such tedious, mind-scrambling work and only your deep knowledge of ALICE to guide you. Really, really wonderful! and so nice to be able to relive it again through your finely detailed & careful work.

For clarification, I've nicknaming versions by their title sequences. I'm dubbing the Monterey VHS as "blue-titles", the most common version. We believe this was the original source of the home media releases. We also believe it originated from television airings as we have confirmed the length with TV listings. The KidKlassics VHS I'll call "marble-titles." Though marble-titles cuts out a huge portion in the middle, it appears to have most of the original editing (but it also has a narrator in the prologue, so no idea).
1). Actually, Souvaine Selective was the American distributor. I think Punch was one of the production companies. I agree with you that the Punch title does look like Bunin did it, but I'm not sure where it came from. We're also not sure if the blue-titles were made for the TV airings or perhaps it came from the theatrical re-release.
2) The whole line starts after the transition to the Lobster Quadrille begins. I purposefully left it out. Admittedly, the line is probably in the original American release (as it's in our marble-titles version), but I wanted to try to recreate what I thought was originally intended.
3) Glad you enjoyed the Caucus Race!
4) I haven't seen any evidence of that, but we are still missing the ending of the scene. Personally, I am confused myself because Alice appears wet during the Carousel scenes, but dry during the discussion. I wondered if the scenes were actually reversed, but they also talk about getting dry in the discussion. Confusing!
5) Yes, they "all talk at the same time" twice in the blue-titles version, but they only do it once in the marble-titles version. I did verify the second sequence was repeat of the first (it was; visually and audibly). I don't know why blue-titles did it twice, besides that the editor did a lot of bizarre choices.
Oh, yes I agree a lot is still missing. The shot (I think) you're referring to is actually an incomplete transition from the French version where it was the blue of the Caucus Race set with the tip of Rabbit's ear in frame then fading to the forest set (If you watch my video of the French slowed down around 38:57, you'll see the tip of Rabbit's ears as the camera pans up, transitioning from the blue sky of the Caucus Race set to the yellow sky of the forest. Additionally the strange audio may be from the missing scene). I couldn't include the whole shot without the ending and no idea where to put the Puppy otherwise.

Why is Alice played by an old bird?
Carol Marsh was I think in her early twenties. Like 19. Its probably the make up. It makes her look like shes 22. There's photos of her in a 1950s Alice in Wonderland production and she looks about 16 with that kind of makeup. Heck she looks like my 15 year old niece in 1958 Dracula film.
