Great review for this figure. other people doing reviews for it just nit picked it to death trying to find ways to complain about it to the point that they were becoming whiny. Sure, this figure has flaws, but its still pretty great looking. And that HotRod figure alone is much better then the Titans Return Hotrod we got.
MP9 that explodes if you look at it wrong you mean? Or Protector that is a 3rd part add-on and designed completely separate of the original figure so that you can't rightly compare it? Yeah sure. Here we've got a fairly decent Hot Rod to Rodimus toy that isn't likely to commit suicide, and created under a limited budget for both halves at the same time. He's not a great Rodimus, and could have some minor improvements, but he's also slightly more ambitious then Optimus is. Optimus is just kinda G1 Power Master Optimus Prime with Orion Pax as the small Robot and the Super Mode based on MP10. Where as Rodimus is a pretty much wholly unique design, while yes Protector is the only closest comparison in that its a trailer that wraps around a sports car, and the Super mode made with parts forming; but again the fact that it was created seperately by other people means it's not an example of 'how it can be done right' espically when it uses only so much of the trailer to create Rodimus prime. They had to create a design that is can be Hot Rod and Rodimus in all their modes, under the same budget, and had nothing to really base it off of. So I give them props for trying. It will at least give them experience for trying things for other Leader Class figures in this line.
To be fair to MP9, its plastic issues aren't the fault of the Hot Rod-to-Rodimus feature, they're just shitty QC, and it would have the same issues even if it was a single Hot Rod or Rodimus Prime.
Your reviews set the standard. Occasionally I'll watch other reviews but thanks to your presentation I rarely have to use the instructions that come with my figures 😂
The way the individual Hot Rod's legs transform, it looks like they could've put a cutaway for the hinges so the larger robot's shoulder movement is better than just have the hips move out as you lift the shoulders up.
I'm thinking the same thing and that's what I'm planning on doing with this when I get him. I can just have the combined mode be a power up armor he uses for harder missions.
I like the figure, my main complaint is that you basically have to split it apart to show the Matrix while the Optimus/Orion figure can open the chest to show it.
I want both Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime but I don't really care about Optimal Optimus. I already have a decent Optimal Optimus sitting on my shelf and don't feel he needs any sort of update. However if they retool the new Power of the Primes toy into Optimal Megatron from the series Finally of Beast Machines, I've been waiting for 17 years for a figure of that. During Beast Machines they made a repaint/retool of the original mold except the new head still looked like Optimus just with a mouth plate on instead of the open mouth design, and called him Primal Prime. This shouldn't be a difficult figure to make. All it requires is a new face sculpt, a new chest piece (the piece still needs to be there for the front wheel in tank mode but it doesn't need to look like a gorilla chest anymore because the Megatron version doesn't have a beast mode), smoothed out shoulders so the Maximal insignias are gone, and you're done. Change the blue into purple... or don't I can't tell the difference anyway, and there isn't even really any need to repaint much if anything at all because they share most of the same colors. Just make him Megatron. Then there was that Titanium figure which by the way was designed from the start to not have a beast mode which makes it perfect for Megatron but he still had the Optimus face. The mold was never reused. Why did they make the figure with all the requirements necessary to make Megatron except for his face? Why sell him as Optimus when we already had a much better Optimus. This is now Hasbro's third chance to get this right. And this version is actually going to be the hardest one to turn into Megatron. The inner robot that Transforms into Optimus Primal is going to have to be a completely different mold. Make something that is hopefully a more show accurate version of BM Megatron from season 1 to go with that armor while the armor itself would again have to be retooled to just not have a beast mode and give it a different robot head. It's a decent looking figure but honestly if you already have the original Optimal Optimus I don't see any reason to pick up the Power of the Primes version. It kinda looks like an inferior toy to me. And that's mostly because of turning season 1 Primal into a hover board just to give him something to do to fit the gimmick of the other Leader class toys in this toy line. It's a nice gimmick but I think it works so much better for Orion Pax/Optimus Prime and Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. Optimus Primal/Optimal Optimus is kind of dumb and unnecessary. At least in my opinion. But if they make a Beast Machines Megatron out of that mold, I'll be all for that.
RialVestro as somebody who does own an original primal prime I can firmly say that I am interested in the new figure, because the old one has gps in the turret, and it won't last forever.
Well, considering I still have mine from childhood and it's in perfect condition..... maybe they can last forever. Either way - I love Beast Era stuff, so whether or not the original Optimal Optimus is still awesome, an update is more than appealing to me. My beast stuff is all on its own shelf - this will be on my Chugs shelves with the rest of Prime Wars. Apples and oranges.
Carelli Collectables I suppose. The GPS is one of the more minor cases. It's got a lot more time left than say black zarak before it crumbles to nothing, but it still will eventually
Peaugh, is there any way you can get a shot of the smaller Rodimus figure standing next to Classics Prime? I've been dying for this comparison but it seems no one has thought to make this comparison!
I'm torn. On the one hand, this is probably my absolute favorite play pattern and may be the sole reason I picked up toys like MP Star Saber and KFC Simba without having ANY investment in their source material and went out of my way to nab the FansProject upgrade kits for Classics Magnus and Hot Rod from a local brick and mortar. If anything Maketoys Thunder Erebus just cemented my love for it. But on the other hand the execution is just kind of... meh. I'll probably still pick it up at some point because it looks okay aesthetically but I'll definitely gun for the Prime first, which is aces.
Hey, Ben. When you get PE's Primal Prime(I assume you'll be getting it), can you do a size comparison of him with this toy in Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime? I'm curious to see if this toy scales well with it. Maybe help build up a modern version of the old BotCon Wreckers cast.
I love that they finally did a rodimus Prime figure that’s official I been waiting years for one . Just one question how do you make your intros ? I been wanting to find out how to make good intros like that for my reviews
Great Review everyone else is giving it so much hate trying to compare to G1 yet it does have some G1 esque to it however it's not suppose to be G1 at all. I do like how it looks and the back pack doesn't bother me at all I can't wait to get Rodimus
I think the smaller figure, and larger figure look great, but as you said, just display. I would have liked to have seen the smaller Hot Rod compared to the recent Titans Returns version as that may ultimately be the decider as to whether I get this. I very possibly wouldn't keep him in Rodimus mode, unfortunately. Great review. Now I want to look up the DX9 figure you showed too.
I was hoping Hasbro would do a DX9 Carry type transformation in Voyager scale and so when this was announced in Leader Class I was already a bit disappointed. When I had seen it I thought it looked decent but man, between stickers and those red mushroom pegs being visible it's a bit of a let down. Definitely could have been executed better. I mean I would buy it JUST for the Hot Rod figure but that's the part that has the ugly mushroom pegs, lol.
Needs third party parts to cover upper inner shoulders/openings in robot mode. I bought mine Christmas day. Over all not a bad figure if you're looking for a budget Rodimus Prime. I hate the stickers though.
I donno, imo, for all it's flaws, this figure actually pulls off the toy concept a lot better then the Optimus one. That Optimus just seems kinda clumsy and forced in execution of it's concept, to me. But then maybe it's a fan expectation thing...I see a lot of Rod fans lamenting over this figure and here I am, a Opti-fan boy lamenting over the Optimus figure.
Looking at both of them straight on, Rodimus looks a LOT better. All the gray on Optimus spoils the aesthetic. I’m definitely getting Rodimus the second I see him on the shelf, but I probably won’t get Optimus unless I can get him on sale.
Autopia Alana Lewis I believe you are referring to Masterpiece MP-40 Targetmaster Hot Rodimus. I am hoping for a true Rodimus Prime for the 86 animated movie
Not bad. Not great, but I've seen worse. Seems like they had the same trouble Takara had with the MP9 but not as bad. Still, a little third party work will sort out some of the problems, and the head sculpt is nice.
Meh, Combiner Wars Megs had awkward shoulders, it really shouldn't bother people as much as it does, considering that version of Megs is deemed one of the best. Im sure we will see an upgrade kit or 2 that replaces Hotrods legs with other legs that work more efficiently as shoulders as well

I think I will pass on this figure. I was never a huge Rodimus fan in the first place but occasionally bought his figures. In this version every single mode has a flaw that bugs me so I have literally zero display options for him.
Wow what a difference 3 yrs makes the new kingdom rodimus blows this outta 😳 the frame, ill be using him as my filler 4 my masterpiece collection till takara decides 2 give us an updated version of rodimus without exploding knees 😳😬🤣🤣🤣👍
i LOVED titans return Hot Rod, but this disappoints me so much. the two strikingly different shades of red are impossible to ignore, the evolution is nothing compared to Optimus's (as you said), and I dislike how both robots look. I'm glad I watched this before I went out and got it, I'm going to stick to JUST my Titans Return figure
Metagrossfreak buy they Chaos on velocitron set for the Rodimus Prime head and put it on TR or Legends hot rod like I did. It looks WAY better than this.💯%
Clip on wheels, no waist swivel, and parts-forming at this price point is unacceptable. Compare any recent release to it's Classics counterpart (2017 Jazz to Classics Jazz for example) and you can see how cheap they've gotten. Hasbro is making the same mistake it did in the 80's, and sacrificing quality for cheap gimmicks
Jarmo Verriet It's not true. Most of the problem in the design is mainly due to lack of hinge for folding panels. Hasbro just being cheapskate and sucks, I hope someday, somehow only Takara will own the Transformers license.
...And yet we have had engineering marvels like Seraphicus Prominon, produced by a newbie company barely a decade old. Zero parts forming, every mode looks amazing. HASBRO has the ability to engineer these things far better, and in fact, used that ability a few years ago. Now, some corners are being cut, and many of the new releases, like this one, look shoddy as hell. Some are amazing though, like Swoop and Slag, and the headmaster jet trio are perfect. In closing, clip on wheels suck. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
At this point it's rare to get a wrist swivel, but waist swivels are necessary for any interesting pose. The kibble pack is pretty bad here, you're right.
I am not talking about the toy but if anyone likes Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime as a character is stupid and I have know idea how they made it this far in life. As a vehicle I will not fault anyone for liking him for that but as character for a person to like him they have serious mental issues and need to seek help. Even in the comics he is nothing but a brat who thinks he knows better and think he can do it all. He should be a character Hasbro should use to promote the growth of all the better Autobot characters or used as canon fodder to show that transformers can die.
This toy is straight BULLSHIT! (parts forming😝) We still need a TRUE CHUG RODIMUS PRIME. I'm using my Rodimus Prime head from the Chaos on velocitron set with my TR and Legends Hot Rod for now and he looks WAY BETTER THAN THIS SHIT!😤
"He doesn't succeed as much as Optimus does."

@@awkwardess Not really funny, just kind of depressing the writers never let him shine really.

The idea for a Hot Rod figure to turn into Rodimus Prime is a great concept though it's way to ambitious to translate to plastic successfully.

Is there a picture of the two together, Quantum? I've been asking around all week for one with no luck.

I'm getting this guy and Open and Plays big cannon, and living in the nostalgia for a while!
I wasn't expecting this to have either of the smaller Hot Rod forms. This thing really is a poor mans Protector, and I say that lovingly.
Why can't I find this figure on tfsource?

Does his blue windscreen not tab in somehow? It was distractingly bad to see that little floppy gap.
Proportions are super wonky on the deluxe Hot Rod. Upper arms and upper legs are way too long.

At this point it's rare to get a wrist swivel, but waist swivels are necessary for any interesting pose. The kibble pack is pretty bad here, you're right.
Not sold & kinda expected this but i pass for now top review
Hehe it’s his character to not succeed as much as Optimus. That’s what makes him interesting.
Out of the way hot rod
Not bad of a figure I like it does kinda reminds me of the fansproject add-on
He looks like a sporty dump truck.
I agree with anyone that feels like this figure could have been executed better
They've seriously gotta stop with the stickers...
HA! Rodimus Prime has his head Hotrod's ass!
I'm dissapointed that they made him a partsformers :(
I am not talking about the toy but if anyone likes Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime as a character is stupid and I have know idea how they made it this far in life.
I made the like count 420
This is a easy pass for me..the power of the prime line is a easy skip as well..ill wait for the movie series..
idk why they make toys that are obviously meant for children, for children that have no connection to a figure.
.....Titans return comparison? no? ok. what the heck peaugh?
This toy is straight BULLSHIT! (parts forming😝) We still need a TRUE CHUG RODIMUS PRIME. I'm using my Rodimus Prime head from the Chaos on velocitron set with my TR and Legends Hot Rod for now and he looks WAY BETTER THAN THIS SHIT!😤
So poorly executed..... Has major back and butt kibble in both bot modes....... it's like a really poor version of the protector armor.
movie for kids
Wow, that is a lot of hot garbage right there.
Terrible toy.
this figure is a mess
I agree with anyone that feels like this figure could have been executed better
Nucleo Negro the actual rodimus was good but the hot rod fell short the titan master is a far better figure
