I never tire myself watching this repeatedly. And I cannot thank this guy enough. Up until this year, I grew up wanting to become an artist but my dad wanted me to become an engineer. My dad was also the very athletic type, and I grew up not being interested in sports. At the time, I didn't think there was a person who was both an athlete and artist at the same time until I read up Tinker Hatfield's story and his designwork with Nike over the years. As someone working towards a BA in Arts at my local university here in Tulsa at ORU and a runner for life, from the bottom of my heart: Thank you for still being around to teach young guys like me who strive to become problem-solvers around the world. I hope to meet you someday, Tinker.

Most kids growing after 2000 who buy shoes have never seen Michael play and only know him because of his signature shoes designed by Tinker.
My son is super into sneakers and their designs. He's been drawing shoes for about a year and a half so I thought this video in my recommended was serendipitous. I hope he looks back on today in his future where he hopefully gets to do what he loves.

When I watch films like this I just get so inspired and motivated to be a better human being. Tinker is such a humble person and I’m glad he had a successful career and was able to make Michael look good on the court and create the shoes we all love !

Tinker is a genius ive always known this and he is my inspiration for starting my own company on customizing shoes and clothing and hopefully one day ill be good enough to get my collaboration with nike and hopefully meet him in person bc what was showed here isnt even half of the things this man has going on with design concepts and projects
There are just so many products out there with seemingly zero understanding or care factor for good design so its refreshing to see a story about someone who does care about it. I just built a truck out to be what most would describe as a motor home but to me it is more of a life support system on wheels that I had to build mostly by hand because so much of what I could buy off the shelf was complete junk or overpriced mostly junk.....Nice to Netflicks lifting its game with some quality content like this episode and their recent nature doco's.
What an inspiration for all creatives to never try and be like someone, just try and be the best version of you. Tinker was an original. His ideas burst from the seams, and he was always true to himself. In today's world, too many people try and copy.
And people nowdays are appreciate the design just like "trash" "wack" and stuff on instagram, and never relized some one really putting hours on it. Real good documentary tho.
Great job from a kid at 12 in the '90s. All I wanted was Nike my mother could not afford them. At 13 I started hustling, cutting grass, buying my own shoes and reeboks were the cheapest option but I could get away with it not being generic. I'm 40 now and all I wear is Air Force ones and Jordan ones. Nike is my favorite shoe. I order something twice a month. Clothes and shoes. My closet is full of Nike sweat suits and shorts also wear different shoes to work like Air Max. Great job!
Severely underrated episode of Abstract. Probably the best. Watched it on Netflix then and watched it now on YT. Good job uploading it for the whole world to understand the creative design process that goes in to releasing a shoe! It's not heartless stuff! Also great advertising for Nike!

I've always liked Nike shoes more than other brands, playing basketball and Michael Jordan were a big part of that reason. Never knew the Nike/Jordan back story though, but thank you Tinker (and MJ) for your amazing, boundary pushing and creative 'tinkering' that has given us so many epic shoes.

Anyone want to wear the Jordan 2 Retro over the iconic Air Jordan 3? The Air Jordan 3 was the first Jordan shoe I bought back in 1988 and made me fall in love with Nike!
tinker is obviously a better shoe designer, but virgil is a great designer too, the off white 4s look great, the changes while suddle, compliment tinkers design very well.
Nike should get down on their knees and thank Jordan's mom, Deloris. She was the one who convinced Michael to give Nike the time of day. He wanted to go to Adidas, not Nike, and if not for his parents' intervention, Tinker's work would've been for nothing.

I used to own 20 pairs of retro Jordans and I ended up selling most of them and just gave up collecting altogether. Resellers and Nike have completely killed all of the fun. Im glad the market is being destroyed by flawless 1:1 fakes.

alexfree Tinker is regarded as a God at Nike, he had his own line come out called the “Tinker 3s” which is a Jordan 3 with a Nike tuck in the side. I believe he would be receiving royalties for all his work
@@atrainjr7754 Thanks I admittedly didn't know abt the Tinker 3's. however whilst I would agree that he would be getting paid in that regard, I was more talking abt some of the general designs he did. Most designers are employed to make the designs, therefor like I said they don't maintain any rights to the designs, this would be the case for most (or maybe only a few) of Tink's designs. In your example that is more of a collaboration of Nike and Tink (as a brand), so in that case i would definitely agree that he would be getting some sort of royalties or something similar.
