They should make Blood War: Total War. These guys would be useful skirmishers.
I mean, they might have the Chaos Demons as a faction in the third Warhammer Total War, so there’s a chance for it

Combine the Treant with the nine hells, and you get the "Thornagon". Also known as the Thorn Devil, or Hell-Tree.
Imagine the look on your player's faces!
Basically they serve as the "bouncers" of the hells. Anything that doesn't belong had better avoid the twisted forests and overgrowth or else!
Missed a good opportunity of a nicely placed "rip and tear" Doom reference in there that would fit with the devil/hell theme of this video and the musical background choice.
I could easily see Spined Devils functioning almost like flying attack dogs in a fight, send a pack of the things after the enemy ahead of the actual charge. They send them into disarray before getting smashed by the stronger devils.
Having some "elite" Spined Devils that had been in the service of a stonger devil by adding Pack Tactics would be a nasty thing there
In 3.5 planetouched were considered native outsiders which allowed them to use *alter self* to transform into lesser outsiders including spinagons. While it was certainly a limited transformation it gave you 120ft flying speed for 1 hour, way better than a fly spell.
That would be interesting when the Spine devils start trying to communicate telepathically with them.
@@AJPickett if I'm not mistaken engaging in telepathic conversation is a two-way street in most cases. And if a PC has the lack of moral standards to turn into a devil that's probably a tiefling, and they probably know infernal(in order to have a familiarity with the forms of the baatezu).

They hide in car fur? Okay, picture Cruella Deville and the 101 Dalmatians. Now picture something like a pit fiend covered from head to toe in spines devils like writhing armor, whilst always walking within a raging swarm of more spined devils, Raam from Gears
So they are the "I'll tell my big brother he'll beat you up" type guys 🤣
The big brother always ends up beating them up afterwards, but... yeah.

I'm actually wondering about this, because in one picture in the video, pit fiends there seem to be hurling green flames, and then there is the spell green-flame blade.
Is green fire some special kind of fire in DnD or something, or is it litereally just fire that is green and nothing more?

In his final form he looks like an inside out pincushion.
The only expossure i have had to the spinny bois so far is a game where i played as a khenku sorc, copied their laughter and used it to taunt them and many many other creatures over the campaign. Highlight was a higher-ranked devil getting butthurt and basically american football rushing the entire party to get at me at the back due to it.

Concept for cursed demon sentient weapon: spinned devil willingly is forged into an artifact to be the weapon for asmodeus’s champion. That way it can get promoted faster to bone devil and then ice devil. I’d treat it somewhat like an Arms of the Betrayers sort of thing maybe. But now my players have it since it is just a black crystal gauntlet.
If a Spined devil developed a friendship, or showed any small amount of goodness, what kind of punishment would it receive? Could it become a diplomatic for upper plane? Also outstanding video as always btw!👍
They would be ripped in half, have the Lemure Ovitorium ripped from their body, and be demoted to that form.
There's no point in further tormenting them, demotion is anguish.
Devil's can be evil and be friends.

I was going to ask if this was a reupload, but then I realized the last one was barbed devil, not spined devil. “Barbed” and “Spined” are literally synonyms of each other, so I think the confusion is warranted.
Barbs, thorns, quills, prickles and spines all conjure specific things in my mind.... humans have a lot of words for things that cause stabbing injuries :)

Spined Devils are the equivalent of mid level interns at 9 Hells LLC. Ranked just high enough to push around the fresh interns or the devils who work in the mailroom, but still low enough to take crap from basically everything else.
AJ, do you have any information on Devil and Demon activities on the Material Plane? I know they can be summoned, or possibly use a Gate spell, but do they have other means of invasion?
Not many, and none well known or at all easy to access... Escaping hell is difficult.

Hey AJ, do devils remember their time in the lesser states? I mean could you get in one's head by reminding them what they have to look forward to once you defeat them or humiliate them by bringing up their past states?

They certainly do, every single moment of it, however, Devils have an often unexpected pride in what they are and how they got to be where they are.. after all, the multiverse owes them everything for keeping the demons from taking over all the planes of existence.
Devils are so interesting. I have a hard time deciding who was right or wrong in the very beginning: the ones who became angels and the ones who became devils. I honestly kind of side with the original devils.....

Even after watch all these devils, I don't don't know much about devils that makes contract with humans.
I'm talking about devils that are capable of making wishes, can transform into human-like figure to appear as a beautiful human, or appear as a classical "devil" look (simple human-like red skin and horns).
And no, I'm not referring to erinyes.

Any devil can make a contract. They may just need to send said contract up the chain of command to someone who can fulfill it. But this still benefits the original holder as they get some recognition for their efforts towards their next promotion. And souls equal power. Thus all the higher up devils want as many as they can get. Beyond that is just the individual quirks of each high ranking devil. Like high school but in hell.

Spinagon are like the playground bullies of the Nine Hells. If I ever get the chance to run them, that's how I'm going to characterise them.
3.5e rules for multiclassing, make them with Rogu3/expert3 +5CR/+? ECL
key skills Spot, Listen, Gather Information, maybe Intimidation ( bully) all at 12 ranks.
Might give them sorcerer4 or wizard3 for the spell Invisibility, along with Alter Self.
My last game shop 15 years ago normally ran 12th-level single or multiclass character games.
If you listen to heavy metal while writing for the nine hells, what do you listen too when writing about Celestia? Enia? Gregorian monk chants ;) Personally the only thing I have been listening to lately is my players wine. What sweet music they make.
I use Enya & the LOTR soundtrack to put my mind in a Fey state, it still gives me that feel of wonder that I felt seeing Peter Jackson's Lothlorien the 1st time. For celestials, I listen to Gregorian chant (martial factions), or some classic Irish harp.
Whine pressed from the blood of adventurers, flavored with the despair of a TPK - one of my favorite vintages. I prefer to serve mine in Kobold lairs, you?

Recommend Amon Amarth, Manowar, Blind Guardian, Powerwolf, Sabaton(of course), Disturbed, Trans-Siberian Orchestra(especially Beethoven's last night), and Tyr's "By the sword in my hand".
Curious if anyone/anyrhing in particular comes to mind when you hear that one.
Dark Tranquility, Finntroll, At The Gates are ones immediately coming to mind.
Brocas Helm's "Drink the blood of the priest" and "Cry of the banshee" are both awesome.

@@AJPickett Tyr: 2nd Thor avatar, the back-up guy to Thor stories with a more relateable version of Thor, when Thor (not Thor by that moment) losing his hand in Fenris's mouth... or other stories. Tyr is far is a far more human Thor with a lost hand without Mjolner even being a thing with him. Thor, before Tyr, was the Norse as a Norse man. Tyr, a former Thor clone, became his own being who became more Norse (human) than human... more human than Thor.

Awesome intro and video AJ. I still wish you did the Sage AJ pic for some of your deep thought comments on them. You are an artist in how you present your videos and you know your audience more than my ancient ^ss does.
I did use these beasties a lot. I also made Imps have that complex relationship with them. I pretty much made them Hell's Kobolds in my campaigns... a thing post-1st & 2nd Ed people might not get as a reference point.
When a party travels to Hell, the first thing they must endure (besides the environment) are these beasties growing in flock size, whispering and laughing. It's when they have a huge flock, they attack while laughing. Attacks by these Devils to a party not informed and ready is a really fast death-by-1000-cuts for every party member.
I also used them to follow and amass in numbers, hiding and watching (lots of perception checks to actually see them), when the party is on their way to challenge certain devils of actual status... like anyone not a Spined Devil. When the party decides to attack that devil, they are usually swarmed by Spined Devils while their target teleports away to let those cannon fodder do their damage while he/she gates in other devils. Rule of thumb: Don't start sh^t in the outer planes unless you can actually take what they give you.
Exactly so. If you can't handle the spined devils, you have no business being in Hell.

I will always remember the Spined Devil as the first real boss in Tales of Phantasia. Good times.
Its funny, but in many ways the lower demons and devils facinate me more than the higher level ones. Its very interesting to see what evil does when it cant do much.

In 3.5 They used to have Produce Flame from the start IIRC (Which isn't super great for them because chucking them as little fireballs only deals about the same as a spike shot or less. I forget it it was 1d6 or 2d6.) and disguise self

Noticed that we didn't get all of the artists credited in today's video. They worked hard on their art and deserve that recognition.
The internet is large. Sometimes credits can't be found. Sometimes a piece is very old, and the artist's name has been lost. Some people don't sign their art, because the art is what is important, and not the creator.
I'm also concerned because there are legal concerns about using an artist's work without permission. If a particularly litigious individual - or organization - decided to throw their weigh around AJ's channel could suffer, and I think we all would like to avoid that.

Huh, awkward that Baet'atka, an imp npc who reappeared as a Spined Devil, is really more of a sidegrade.. Would it not be unheard of for a throwaway imp to be turned into a Spined Devil for the purpose of faster overland flight? Because that little guy actually became a party/antagonist neutral deliverer of messages whenever called by the inscribing of the (as of yet unidentified) Symbol of Avernus.
The party actually summoned Bae-t'atka'chkayktktk in order to request an sos message fo their retired divine sorceror.
@@PattPlays Hmmm, well there are several different types of imps, and there a many different types of Spined devil, mainly related to the layer they call home, which archdevil they may be pledged to serve, and what they devote most of their time to doing... so, imps and spinagons, while pretty low on the pecking order, are just as complex as humans.
@@AJPickett They did seem cool with the side-grade as it were. They are all disconnected from the plot of Zariel (pre Baldur's Gate 2019) but trust that every step in the operation was anticipated by her tactics and go with it.
What the party did to one of them, whoo.. I tell ya, it was extremely fun playing with the three Fiendish Classes in the appendix of the 3.5? fiend folio for fiends of posession, seduction, and blasphemy in 5e. Spectral Oni, dude. Spectral fiend-blessed ogre mages. Struck gold there. Shame what happened to the bastard.

Why don't the Devil's just promote every devil into something extremely powerful? They could surely over run anything if they didn't bother with the lesser stages.
That would cause utter chaos in the hells, and would be like having two dozen managers with nobody to manage. It would be rewarding maggots that don’t deserve it. It would also be quite likely to cause a rebellion as every devil with a feud against their masters got some measure of power to act with. Not to mention that the little guys are useful. Much easier to sneak in an imp than a pit fiend.

This makes me think that carrying a few spells is a good idea, sure. Rain a couple lightning bolts down to clear them out. However, this is DnD. You need to sleep to recast most of the time.
So, make a full auto crossbow. Load her up with a few bolts, spray them in the air, and you might cripple them.
Blessed "venomous" crossbow bolts loaded with holy water instead of poison.

If you gave them a well made weapon and some modest training they'd do fine. Some guys with strong crossbows and heavy bolts? Yeah, that'll go farther thsn you think.
@@TheKing-qz9wd One of the things I usually do to add a fantasy flavor is think about what kind of special gear a kingdom or city would develop after a devastating attack by *monster X*, and then adding a few bits of that preparation.
