  • Welcome to the second part of a series of training diaries documenting the process of training a falconry hawk. I hope to give you an insight into the work involved and the way the hawk develops as training progresses.
There are lots of ways to approach falconry and training raptors. This is a way that works for me. Often I will tweak what I do depending on the bird as each are individuals. That's, after all, what makes falconry so challenging and interesting.

Well, ravens are much smarter than raptors.....no shade on Cloud, raptors don’t NEED the brains of a Corvid, since they’re designed to hunt for their food.....sight it and attack rather than forage thru various types of environments, with all the attendant issues that can arise. Play.....using imagination to use things for other than their intended purpose, for fun, is both a result, and an indicator of intelligence. This is why the raptors can be put out to weather and be perfectly content. They have things to watch, they have sun and rain and wind, water and they’re happy. Fable tho, needs all the toys, and company, and activity around her to keep her mind occupied, because she’s always thinking, always investigating and without any outlets for that need she would be a very unhappy creature, which she obviously is not. It’s so cool to watch Cloud developing a trust. Won’t be long before he’ll be flying at this rate.....exciting

One of my all time favorite books is The Once And Future KIng by T H White which I read the first time as a kid. The scene were Wart is sent to the mews by Merlyn is just riveting, it still thrills me. It took awhile to find a copy of The Goshawk, but it was well worth the effort. Finding this gem of a video that actually let see into what I thought was a bygone world was just the best. The video is so good! I found the commentary very clear and concise. I really enjoyed the falconers calm patience and obvious respect and affection for the hawk. And that bird, Wow! I shared this with my 90 yo mom and she was so struck with how beautiful and engaged the hawk was. I can't say enough how much I appreciated this video. Thank you for sharing!
