I would suggest the Cummins R2.8 crate motor, but they're pretty proud of 'em. However, I understand that they were created just for what you're building. They have pretty good low-end torque and are very fuel efficient. I watched a video about it and Lt. Dan came to mind immediately.
Well You already know the answer from me about the Diesel swap! Oh... and yes that motor does bring out the blue in your eyes....... You should probably paint the Kubota motor blue too, just to keep with a theme. Don't forget to check out Rusty Autoholic Guy, he is doing a Kubota swap in a newer jeep and has tons of information. Great guy that answers all your questions. Glad the starter did the trick on the ole Jeep! The motor looks great!
Duddie, I was hoping you would comment pretty quick. I found the Kubota v2203 for $450. It is my understanding that this is a very good deal but what do you say? I have been talking with Rust Autoholic Guy on his videos as well about the swap.
@@decentgarage I would say that is a great deal! I mainly see them in running condition for $1000-$1800. Mind you I believe the V2403 being the newer model usually is in the 1800 price range plus these are prices I in Texas. Glad you got in touch with Rust Autoholic. Also besides Kubota swapper I think there is another company that makes kits called Overlander Jeep or Overland Jeep. You may have to do some googling. That jeep would be so cool with a Kubota!
Thanks Duddie, yeah I figured it was a pretty good deal. I have verbally committed to buying it. I have been in communication with Overland Jeep but will also reach out to Kubota swappers as well. I can't wait to do this conversion.
Kubota swap sounds interesting ! Here in France the cj7 was sold with a Renault 2.1l Diesel engine. I had a 2.1l TD in mine. Great fuel mileage but not much power....😅
Yeah while the 4BT is a great motor, it's WAY to big for a CJ-5, not saying it can't be done, but having a 782lb engine in the front of a light weight CJ-5 is not ideal!
Hey just watched the video! That is the first CJ-5 I've seen with that type of emissions on it before! If you are good with carburetors take a look at the Ford 2100 2-barrel carbs, you want one with 1.08 venturi which should be about the correct CFM for your engine. I need to go back and check out your other videos but do you know if you have the 232 (3.8l) or the 258 (4.2L) engine in your CJ-5? The V2203 is a great motor and the most common to get, I would recommend it over the V2403 that I'm using actually. I'm running into some weirdness with my V2403 though it's miner! I'm having to guess here, but I believe you have a 3-speed manual in your CJ-5, you'll need to be mindful about gearing if you want to get highway speeds, though in a CJ-5 about 55mph is all you want to do! As Duddie said feel free to ask any questions, I think this is going to be an awesome build if you go diesel route! The low end torque is unreal in these little Kubota engines!
Rusty Autoholic Guy, welcome to the channel! I'm glad to have a few people following along with this build that can help out when I get stuck. The current setup in the jeep is the 258 4.2l with a 3 speed tranny (T-150?). I don't intend to make the jeep much of a highway vehicle. I would be fine if it topped out at 60 or 65. With the diesel swap on the horizon I probably won't pursue a new carb on the current motor as the end is in site for that setup.
@@decentgarage yup that makes sense. Sense you have a later CJ-5, earlier models has a smaller engine bay that could only accommodate an inline 4 cylinder, I would highly suggest looking into either a AX15 or a T-5 manual transmission swap. I would go with a Borg Warner T-5, it will bolt up to a Dana 300 transfer case, which I believe you have, and having the .86 overdrive is going to really help with highway speeds while the 4.06:1 1st gear paired with the torque of the Kubota Diesel is going to be great for offroading in the CJ-5. To accomodate for the longer 5 speed transmission, you'll need to move the V2203 forward, but you'll have plenty of room since you currently have a 4.2l inline six. KubotaSwappers makes an adapter kit for your 4.2l as well. Basically his kit makes the back of the Kubota V2203 look like an AMC inline 6, I believe the 4.0l in later model Jeeps and the 4.2l are the same when it comes to bolt pattens but I would check with him to confirm.
Those of you who made it to the end of the video, what are you thoughts on the diesel swap?

People are sleeping on this build! Keep up the hard work.
Thanks mike! Should turn out pretty sweet
Decent Garage I’m excited to see

@@decentgarage Awesome! Sounds like you got a plan! That Jeep would be so cool crawling around Moab with a Diesel!
Bring the death charger and we'll meet up in Moab!
Wellll, I'm with Duddie. Taco's n diesels. Only way to go. Should be a pretty cool cruiser when all is said and done. Thumbs Up Tim !
I'm way more excited for it with the prospect of swapping the kubota in to it
I like the idea of the kubota diesel swap
Me too! It has me super excited for the project 😃
Alls the starter needs is a new Bendix. Easy fix and cheap too.
Maybe I'll fix it and keep it as a backup.

Considering how overpriced 4bt's are i think the Kubota swap would definitely be the next best thing.
Yeah I'm excited for it! It will make it so much more fun to drive.

I would keep the Jeep as original as possible.
That's the plan.... Except with a kubota engine 😬
sure why not
Lt. Dan needs some new legs.... Or shoes rather
