I was going to mention also as did others, that is called a "bo" in Japanese. it finally clicked the other day why people, mostly English speaking, call it a bo staff. Only makes sense when we have a word "bow" to mean a weapon with a string that sends and arrow down range. But if we English speaking people want to call it a bo, we have to let the other English speaking people know we mean "staff". Otherwise, people would expect the thing with a string and you take out a stick. I will call it a bo, OR I will call it a staff. but not both at once. Others may do as they please. Thank you, and good day.

Hi Mark, I have had to explain why we call it a bo staff to so many trolling comments in the past. Your perspective on how bow and bo, being homonyms, have forced us to add an additional describing adjective to staff "bo", bo staff, really explains it well. Well done!

The FIRST mistake is calling it a "bo staff". The Japanese word for staff is "bo". Saying 'bo staff' is like saying 'katana sword'...smh.

Kris R Thanks for that point. I have addressed this several times in the past in some of my other videos and articles. In this decade, bo staff has become a direct Anglicized combination used for to the rokushakubo. Rather than fight the linguistic grain, it is useful to use this term for opening the door to the student's deeper training. Of course, in due time, any serious bojutsu-ka should understand the proper etymology.
